Dr. R. Laverne Landis M.D., 74 of Tunkhannock, died Wednesday January 13, 2010 at home. He was born in Norristown, Pa., son of the late Raymond S. and Eva Moore Landis. He and his wife the former Emma Jean Mack, R.N., celebrated their 51st anniversary June, 1, 2009. He was a member of the Plains Memmonite Church, Hatfield, Pa and the First Baptist Church of Factoryville. He was a graduate of Eastern Memmonite University and Temple University Medical School. He spent most of his life caring for people; He worked for two years in a hospital rather than being drafted and going to war. He was a family physician in Factoryville and Tunkhannock for 25 years. He served as chief of Staff and as a Board member for many years at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock. After retirement he and his wife Jean R.N. decided they wanted to work in poverty stricken areas of the world. They were medical volunteers in Jamaica, the worked on nine different Indian Reservations His hobbies he enjoyed, bird watching, hiking, reading, traveling, music and gardening. He was looking forward to spending eternity in heaven. He was preceded in death by his daughter Konnie Landis MD, a son Kenton Landis and a sister Eva Sell. Also surviving are two daughters: Karen Alderfer and her husband Tim of Athens, Pa., Kathy Landis and her husband Miles Reimer of Newton, Ks., a son Kenneth R. Landis and his wife Rosetta of Croghan, NY, a son-in-law William Sutherland, Everett, Wash., two sisters: Marilyn Allebach and her husband Claude of Telford, Pa. Jane Landis of York, a brother David Landis and his wife Linda of Montrose, Co., 6 grand children and 2 great grand children. A celebration of Laverne’s life will be held on Sunday at 4pm at the First Baptist Church of Factoryville, Pastor Paul Fields officiating. Interment will be on Monday in the Plains Memmonite Church Cemetery, Hatfield, Pa. Friends may call at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock on Saturday from 1 to 3 and Sunday from 1 to 3. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee, 21 S. 12th St., Akron, Pa. 17501 for either International programs or for Uganda, Africa Programs.
