April 9, 1891
James Dunn Dead- James Dunn, whose serious illness was mentioned last week, died before the paper reached its readers, breathing his last about 12 o’clock Tuesday night, March 31st. Funeral and interment at St. Basil’s Church in this place Friday morning.
James Dunn was born in County Kildare, Ireland, April 12, 1805, and consequently was at the time of his death 85 years, 10 months and 19 days old.
Attaining his majority he determined to seek his fortune in the new world, and emigrated to America sometime about 1830. He came to what is now Sullivan County about 1883 and began the task of hewing for himself a home out of the wilderness. Indomitable energy and hard work soon raised him from poverty to comparative affluence, and honesty and uprightness gained him influence, and made him a man of affairs in the young county.
A staunch Democrat in politics he maintained his interest in public affairs to the last, and for over fifty years never missed an election. Last fall is growing infirmities confined him to the house on Election Day and for the first time in half a century, he was inquired for in vain at the polls. He ran the entire gamut of township office with credit to himself and the satisfaction of the township and at one time was county commissioner.
In 1860 he was census enumerator for Sullivan County.
He was twice married, first in early life to Dorothy Gilmore; six children survive as the fruits of this union. Peter, of Forks township; Mrs. Margaret Baumgartner, of Cogan House, Lycoming county; Mary, wife of John Harney; William living on the old homestead, Frank of Cherry and James Dunn Jr. Another son, John gave his life to his country during the war. The wife of his youth died about eighteen years ago, and he married a Mrs. Harrington, who with two children, Ella and Morris, survive to mourn the loss of a husband and father whom the whole county knew and respected.
