A well-known resident of Burnsville, died at his home about three o'clock, Wednesday morning, December 1, 1909, of general debility, aged about 74 years. Funeral service at his late residence on Friday at 10 o'clock and a brief service in the M. E. church at Dallas in the afternoon. Interment in Dallas cemetery.
Mr. Steele was one of nine children of William and Jane Woodburn Steele, and was born in the old Harsh house at Majorsville. His father was born and raised at Lancaster, Pa., and located at Warrenton, Ohio, from which place he brought his family to West Finley township more than 80 years ago. He was married twice and A. J. Steele was also married twice, his first wife being Martha Conkle, daughter of Jacob Conkle. She died about 37 years ago. Miss Mary Carroll became his second wife and survives him. Mr. Steele resided for some time at Campbell's Station, Belmont County, O., and while residing there enlisted in the 172 Ohio regiment, serving in guard duty at various river points on the lower Ohio. Returning to West Finley township he purchased a farm adjoining the home farm. Later he sold that farm and purchased the home farm from his brother Thomas. He resided on the home farm until a few years ago, when he retired and moved to Burnsville. He was long a member of Salem M. E. church. He is survived by seven children-T. V. Steele, of Dresden, Mo.; Mrs. A. T. Groves, of Pleasant City, Ohio; Mrs. R. E. Carroll, of Video; Willard and Charles O. Steele and Mrs. Etta Alley, of Majorsville, and Mrs. H. M. Lacock, of Burnsville. Of his brothers and sisters, the following survive: Thomas J. Steele, of Claysville; Wesley Steele, of Kansas City, MO.; Samuel Steele, of Barboursville, W. Va. and Mrs. Christie McKerrihan, of Richhill township, Greene county.
