Following the death of his father, James, Robert became manager of the family homestead in 1883. In 1879 and 1880 he was inspector of elections for Lower Chanceford Township of York County, PA. In 1881 he was elected to road supervisor of the Township where he was reelected again the next year.

He married Martha J. Robinson, the daughter of Daniel Robinson of Dauphin County, in 1865. Together they raised a family of 9 children, one of which, Jesse William, was the Grandfather of the author. Like his father, Robert played an active part in his community. He was a member of the Harbor Lodge No. 333 I.O.O.F. of Safe Harbor, Lancaster County and a member of the McKendrie Methodist Episcopal Church of Lower Chanceford.
