Dr. Joseph T. (Corky) Sweeney, DC, 56, of 20 Bull Run St., Coaldale, a well known chiropractor in Carbon and Schuylkill counties, died March 29 in St. Lukes Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. He maintained his office at 159 Patterson St., Lansford. After graduating from college, he did an internship with Dr. John Dematte, Lehighton, and opened a chiropractic office in Beaver Meadows before eventually relocating to Lansford. In 2002, he was named Irishman of the Year by the Panther Valley Irish American Association and was presented the Annual Shamrock Award during the 56th Annual St. Pattys Banquet. He was a 14-year member of the association, having served as its president in 1993. Born in the Seek section of Coaldale, he was the son of the late Joseph Jiggs and Grace (Kennedy) Sweeney. He attended St. Jeromes Parochial School and later graduated from the second class of Panther Valley High School in 1966. Dr. Sweeney was a member of St. Jeromes Roman Catholic Church, Tamaqua, where he served on the parish council. He was a member of the Coaldale Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Fr. Henry W. Baher Council, Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Carbon County Chiropractic Association. Survivors: Son, Timothy P. Sweeney of Coaldale; brother, Timothy J. and his wife Elizabeth of Lansford; two nieces. Services: Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, Tamaqua. Call 5-9 p.m. Friday, Al M. Sverchek Funeral Home, Lansford. Interment in the parish cemetery, Tamaqua.
