Charles D. Carl, 92, of 320 Plane St., Gordon, passed away Monday in an automobile accident in Northumberland County.
Born in Minersville, Nov. 24, 1920, he was a son of the late George and Minnie Sweinhart Carl.
He attended the former Hegins Township High School and later served in the Army's 334th Engineering Battalion during World War II. His tour of duty included Germany, France and Belgium, earning the Philippines Liberation Medal, the European Theatre Medal and two Bronze stars.
He was employed as a coal miner for the former Bush Coal Co., Tower City, until his retirement.
He was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church, Citizen's Fire Company and Getty Lucas AMVETS Post 44, all of Gordon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Lucas Carl, in December 2008; a son, Willard, in 1965; sisters, Violet Lucas, Ida Leitzel, Anna Mervine and Edna Rhoades.
Surviving are daughters, Diana Troutman, Gordon, and Nora, wife of Ira Foose, Mahanoy City; sons, Joseph Helwig and his wife, Judy, White House, Tenn., Charles Carl Jr. and his wife, Celia, Knoxville, Tenn., and Larry Helwig and his wife, Renee, Gordon; a sister, Joan, wife of Dale Kroeck, Annville; a brother, George Carl, Tower City; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.
Friends and relatives will be invited to a graveside funeral service with military honors at a later time. Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of arrangements.
