You are so right about names being read incorrectly. I use Heritage Quest Online to search census listings, and for the 1900 census, they had your ancestor listed as Fred Paris. Once I clicked on the name and saw the names of his children, I knew it was the correct person. Sometimes, I will do a search using only first name, age, and place of birth. You have to be willing to get creative.
