Stuck in search for Krepps ancestor

Classification: Query
Surnames: Krepps, Kreps, Crebbs, Creps
I have been researching the Krepps line of my family for 15 years. My grandfather also researched this line through the LDS in the 1970's and even with the advent of computers, I have gotten no further back than Christian Krepps, born 1809 in Ohio, died 4/26/1897 in St. Johns, MI; married to Elizabeth Bare or Burr, who was born in PA. They had 8 children. I have found him in the 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses. The only information I can find for his parents are that his father was also named Christian and was born in Maryland and his mother was Anna M. I've looked in census records for his parents but haven't had any luck. Can anyone give me some tips on other places to look or search variations? I have tried doing a soundex search of the last name since it is usually misspelled but it still hasn't helped. I have all of the other main lines of my family traced back to the 1500's and it's driving me crazy that I can't find out whether this line of the family came from!
