You need to go back to the War of 1812 pension document and the obituary and glean the place information from them. Then follow the census records backwards. Don't try to jump back to New York without following the trail of documents.

The War of 1812 pension record for Charles Fryer and Elizabeth that I found on ancestry is Elizabeth's application for a pension as a widow.
It is filed in Centre County, Pennsylvania on 23 August 1875. (There's your starting point for the 1870 census)
It says Charles enlisted as Selins Grove PA - a private in Capt Robinson's 42nd
Included in the file is Charles' pension application from 1866 which states he is a resident of Penn Township, Centre County, PA
One page states Elizabeth and Charles were married the 15th day of January 1826, that he died the 29th day of April 1873, that he resided in Centre county at the time of his death

This is not the document from ancestry, but does have information about his service
United States Registers of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1941. It states he was born in Montgomery, PA.

Here's the family in 1870:
1870 Census
Penn, Centre, Pennsylvania
Fryor, Charles, 77, PA
- Elizabeth, 68, PA
- Samuel, 26, PA
- Sarah, 24, PA
- Mary, 7, PA
- Malinda, 3, PA
(This census does not state relationships, but it is possible that Samuel and Sarah are husband and wife, and Mary and Malinda their daughters. This would be a more likely scenario that Elizabeth age 68 having a 7 year old or 3 year old)
