I am researching, in the 1820-1835 time period for an Irish immigrant who is
believed to have sailed into Philiadelphia
POE, settled somewhere in Pennsylvania, and alledgedly became a General in
the Pennsylvania militia, and was
awarded land in Indiana for his service, settling there in 1835.
His name is Michael Shiel. He was born in County Tipperary, Ireland 1793,
which would have made him 27 years old in 1820, and 40 years old if he
arrived in the U.S. in 1833, which is the popular belief. Mr. Shiel was a
farmer by profession, and is buried in Tipton County, Indiana.

I am trying to determine when he entered the U.S., and whether he actually
was in the service of the U.S., or
Pennsylvania Militia, and whether he received a grant of land in Indiana.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
