I was very lucky to purchase on ebay more than twenty original publications of tax records from Warwick--spanning 1875-1917--not every year but representative. There is great information on value of each taxpayers property, who paid poll taxes(who voted),town expenditures and officials. This includes West Warwick. I would be glad to share and do a lookup.

Pat DiSabatino

Samuel BLANCHARD fought in the Revolutionary War. His wife, Betty TYLER applied for a pension after the 1836 Revolutionary Claim Act. Samuel and Betty are my 4th great grandparents. A few of my distant cousins and I have been attempting to transcribe 45 pages from NARA concerning Samuel's Revolutionary War service. This all occurred in Kent County, Rhode Island.

Beginning at line 10 in the file located at: http://snipurl.com/2sz14, we read:

State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
Kent Fe or Se? I Jeremiah S Slocum Clerk of the Court of …

We are attempting to figure out what is the apparent abbreviation following the word, “Kent” in headings on several pages of Samuel's records. We don’t know whether it is the old leading "s" situation or what. It doesn’t look like a double "s" situation. Here is a different example of it on line 2 at:

http://snipurl.com/2sz28

On still a different page again on line 2, “Kent” is missing and it looks like Sr or Fr:

http://snipurl.com/2sz3k

Are these just dividers or do they actually stand for something? Is anyone on this list familiar with this time period's handwriting perhaps?

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to provide us.

Later...Nancy Cluff Siders,
List Admin for LETSON Mailing List,
Board Admin for LETSON Message Board;

P.S.
Owen DUFFY, Part 2

Hello, Friends,

I have been gathering documents and I must admit this mystery gets even more confounding, but also so very intriguing. I have the whole family digging and discovering, but now I need some guidance.

First of all, I got some pictures! On the back of the photos were some names and dates. Owen's just said Owen Duffy, but it turns out Ellen is really Ellen CONNORS, born in Scotland and died Sep 1899 at age 26. I sent for and received her death certificate as well as that of Owen, and I got the marriage certificate of Owen and Ellen CARROLL just for good measure.

Here are the facts:

1 Ellen DUFFY, died on 6 Sep 1899. She was the daughter of John and Bridget CONNORS and according to the record, she was the wife of JAMES, not Owen. However, since Owen was probably Owen James, this could be a slip of the record keeping or the use of familiar and not "official" name. Am I thinking correctly? She was born in Scotland as the family believed. She was living at 114 Bowdoin, Ward 10 in Providence at the time, which was a bit of a surprise also. She died of tuberculosis.

2. The Owen DUFFY for whom my grandfather James was contacted to pay for the funeral died on 24 Feb 1939 at the age of "73?" He is listed as a plumber, which jives with family beliefs. His birthplace is listed as Warwick, but he was living in Providence at 176 O'Connell. He is listed as the widower of Nellie Murray, another surprise. It looks like Owen may have married again. It would probably have been after 1907 which makes getting the records more difficult. His parents are listed as Patrick Duffy and Catherine Martin, both born in Ireland. The informant is listed as Susan Lamb, a friend from Harris Avenue, West Warwick. Do you think this was the Susan Lamb who was the state representative from West Warwick at the time of Owen's death? How would a person of his ilk have known a woman like that? Makes one ponder. My aunt had told me earlier that they got regular info from a "Mrs. Lamb" about Owen's doings when he was alive. He was buried at St. Mary's. There was probably no stone marker.

3. Here's where things get tricky. The marriage certificate I received shows Owen James Duffy, age 24, a plumber, son of Patrick and Catherine Duffy marrying Ellen CARROLL, daughter of James H. and Maria CARROLL on 14 Sep 1892. Both are listed as being born in Johnston RI (Is this near Natick?) They were living in Providence at the time. Right Owen, wrong Ellen.

The copy of the birth certificate that I have for my grandfather, which he obtained in 1919, lists his parents as Owen J and Ellen and her birthplace as Scotland. I sent for a birth certificate from the friendly folks at the archive to see if the info they send me is the same as on the one I have. They should be, but....

From the evidence I have in front of me, I think we (the family) has either the right Owen and wrong Ellen, or the right Ellen and wrong Owen, or..????

If we play along and think that somehow the right Ellen (i.e. CONNORS) and right Owen somehow really were the ones married and producing James,I am now convinced the 6 year old in the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children in the 1900 census is probably my grandfather. I have contacted the RI Children and Familys Department and requested copies of whatever information they have from the intake log, etc.

I also asked archives to see if they could locate a marriage involving Ellen CONNORS,

So where do I turn next? What stone am I leaving unturned? This is so very, very intriguing.

Thanks for let me think out loud. Sorry about the length of this.

Pat

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Owen J. Duffy. He was born in Natick about 1864 and married Ellen Carroll in 1892. They had a son, my grandfather James F. Duffy, on Oct. 21, 1893. There the trail goes cold. Apparently Ellen died soon afterwards, but I can't find any records. My gradfather ran away from home at age 11 to escape abuse. Owen apparently was the town drunk. He died around 1939 and my grandfather paid $157 to the James Gough funeral home in West Warwick, but I cannot find the exact date of death or where he is buried.

Thanks for guidance.

Looking for burial records for Charlotte Keach, buried at #38 cemetery in East Greenwich, 1849

I have contacted the Public Library in East Greenwich, Rhode Island in hopes I could find some burial records about a Charlotte Keach, buried at Historical Cemetery #38 - she died March 13, 1849 and her gravestone says, "wife of George." Since Charlotte Keach's headstone is very close to Almira BRIGGS Keach's gravestone I believe that this Charlotte was one of my anscestors. There are many George Keach's and I really need to find out what Charlotte Keach's maiden name was! Can anyone suggest any other places to look for burial records in Rhode Island (East Greenwich) for the year 1849?

The librarian at the Greenwich Library could not find any other documents, other than the one I told her that I had, Bruce Campbell MscGunnigle's book, "East Greenwich, Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Inscriptions."

Thank you in advance for any suggestions,

Monica

Land recods indicate Simeon and Phebe Brand sold land to his father, Robert Brand, in 1778 in Westgreenwich. I would like to communicate with anyone who is researching these families.

I am searching for the family of 2 soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Kent County, Rode Island as their home of record. Their remains were never recovered.

Soldier: VITTORIO MICHELE ANTONIO
Born: September 28, 1928
Date of loss: November 30, 1950, Missing in Action (MIA)

Soldier: ARCHIE JAMES CLOSSON
Born: October 23, 1928, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 12, 1950, Prisoner of War (POW)

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 8 families from Rode Island that have not been located. There are 2 families from Kent County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
HULET and HOPKINS, Plainfield, CT., also Kent Co., RI., to Shaftsbury, Vermont (Rev. War)

Looking for information on a Revolutionary War era Joseph HOPKINS of Rhode Island.

Here is what is known for sure at this time and can be documented. There was a Joseph HOPKINS that had a wife named Mary, and they had at least three daughters named; Cynthia, Bethia, and Sylvia.

Cynthia (HOPKINS) (1775-1860) married Aaron HULET (1755-1835,) (sometimes HULETT, HEWLET, HEWLETT, HUGHLET, and probably other spellings, but HULET is most normal.)

Aaron HULET was born in 1755 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT, and served in the Revolution as a private in several different periods of the war, and was a pensioner. I have copies of his pension file. Cynthia was his second wife and she also received a widow’s pension.

In the widow’s application there is a document signed by her two sisters that certifies that Cynthia and Aaron were married. The sisters names are given and so is the fact that their fathers’ name was “Joseph HOPKINS.” Cynthia actually filed twice, first in 1838 for her normal widow’s pension, then again in 1855 for a Bounty Land Warrant. It is not known for sure which filing the separate undated sisters document was filed, but seems most likely would have been the 1838 filing.

Now here is the problem. I have quite a lot of very good information on Cynthia and Aaron, including their graves in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., Vermont in an area that was known as “Little Rhodie” (all others in the cemetery are MATTISONs from Rhode Island.)

One of the sisters signed her name as “Bethia REYNOLDS.” The third sister signed as “Sylvia PARKER.” Who were they? Where did they live? When and who did they marry? When did they die? Where are they buried? Why can I not find them on ANY census? It seems likely that they would have resided near Cynthia in Shaftsbury, Arlington or Bennington, Vermont, or perhaps very close by across the New York State line in Washington County, New York, possibly in Cambridge, Jackson, Salem, or White Creek. Many people from all of those communities interacted quite a bit. Bethia (HOPKINS) REYNOLDS and Sylvia (HOPKINS) PARKER possibly could have still lived back in Rhode Island at that time, but if so, where?

Cynthia and Aaron were married in Foster, Rhode Island in 1793, and my strongest hunch is that Joseph HOPKINS and his wife Mary were most likely the ones known to have been from West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI., but then comes the next problem. Which Joseph HOPKINS? In several different listings of West Greenwich, RI Militia reports there were two very active Joseph HOPKINS and when ever listed they were either described as “Joseph HOPKINS, son of Thomas” or “Joseph HOPKINS son of Samuel.”

Josephs’ wifes’ name as “Mary” is listed as the name of Cynthia (HOPKINS) HULET’s mothers’ name in the Shaftsbury town records. No cemetery information is known for Mary, but she was living, “aged near 80 years,” with Aaron and Cythia in Shaftsbury, in June 1820, when Aaron filed for his pension.

So to recap:
Need help with Joseph HOPKINS (flourished during the Revolutionary War period,) somewhere in Rhode Island. His wife’s name was Mary. He had at least three daughters; Cynthia (HOPKINS) HULET, Bethia (HOPKINS) REYNOLDS, and Sylvia (HOPKINS) PARKER.

“PLEASE” help me find these people! Been searching for thirty years, I’m getting old.

The email addresses I’ve used for many years have changed several times, but you will no doubt always be able to reach me through my website: Upstate New York Genealogy, www.unyg.com.

All ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Dick Hillenbrand

John C. Hall (b. 1767) and his wife Clara (b. 1787-1795)

Looking for any birth, marriage, church, or bible record, etc... information. John C. Hall was born in Rhode Island in 1767 according to the 1850 U.S. Census of Norfolk, Connecticut. His wife's name was Clara and both appear on that census. They also both died in Norfolk, CT from 1850-55. It is not known where they got married but John appears to have moved to CT and started a family in Norfolk in the early 1800's. John was a Native American [Pequot] and is listed as black, mulatto, or colored on various census records. His wife Clara is similarly listed but her maiden name is unknown. Oral family history says that John's middle initial "C" is for his real indian name and that his name was "changed" to John Hall when he got maried. Thanks and reply to hallsandgrants@yahoo.com

Marie Louise Benoit was married to Francois Xavier Charron. Francois died in 1916, and the information I have is that Louise was deceased at that time. She was alive during the 1910 US Census, but, she's disappeared off the map after that time. Does anyone have access to St-John the Baptist death records and could check to see if she's listed there. I checked the Potvin funeral home records, and the RI death records, but, she doesn't show up. Did she return to Quebec? or did she return to CT where she resided prior to moving to RI pre 1900s?

The Cowesett Cemetery where the earliest LEVALLEYs were buried has vanished. A report around 1900 stated that only a few of the headstones were still standing. Later in the century, it was paved over, and is now reportedly the parking lot of a restaurant. No one seems to know what happened to the tombstones, or whether the bodies were moved. Does anyone know the location or what happened to the people buried there?

I am hot on the trail now. Does anyone claim Jalen Greene and wife Esther Gleeson (Gleason) of Rhode Island in their ancestry? The name Jalen is deciphered from his son's death certificate - it could be Julius, Jalias, etc. Best guess is Jalen

It appears Jalen's son, James Green, b. 1802, married Mary Hewitt and lived (floated maybe) around the western end of NY - they had children in Attica, Greece, and who knows where. James went to Michigan at least for a while, but returned and died in Pike 1884. His daughters, Elvira Green Shepherd 1821-1914 (m. Martin Shepherd 1814-1877) lived and died in Pike, Mary A. (Adeline M.) Green Murray b. 1825 (m. Sanford L. Murray 1814-1859 resided Michigan) came back to Pike from Michigan and died there 1878. Son Albert Benjamin Green m. Florilla Fargo of Warsaw and moved to Michigan. There was another daughter Emily who is missing in action - and possibly a son.

I am welcome to all hints. Ann Marr

Greniers from Quebec to West Warwick, RI
I am seeking information on a Grenier Family which seems to have originated in Quebec and moved to West Warwick, Kent Co., RI. This is for my wife's side.

Her gr-grandfather was Aime Grenier, born about 1868. He married Rossanna, born about 1869. They are both buried in St. Joseph's Cemetary in West Warwick, RI. Aime's family immigrated from French-Canada (we are pretty sure Quebec) in 1886/87 (damn that lost 1890 census). I have found them in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses, all in W. Warwick. In the 1910 and 1920 censuses, Alphonse Grenier is listed as "Father" to Aime.

Alphonse was born about 1843 in French-Canada. I have located a 1881 Canadian Census record on FamilySearch.org that lists a widowed Alphonse Grenier with Aime, Oliver, and Elizabeth. The birthdates for both Alphonse and Aime match my U.S. census records, so I am confident this is them.

From there things get difficult. A Google search turned up this site: http://www.cjutras.org/CJGRENIER-A.html#F054617, which has an Alphonse married to Marguerite Bonenfant, with son Oliver. But few other details are listed (no birth dates, just marriages).

My wife's 98 year old grandmother (daugther of Aime) seems to recall Alphonse, an uncle Oliver, and grandmother Marguerite; but I would like to find documented evidence linking all of these finds together.

Any help filling in this side of the tree would be much appreciated.

Bryan

LADD, LEWIS, PARKER, HAWKINS, BURLESON

Hello-
I am looking for any info on THOMAS GORDON LADD born
in RI 1784, maybe Kent Co., died 1856 in Madison Co.,
NY. His wife was ABIGAIL born in RI c1783, died circa
late 1860s in Madison Co., NY (looking for her maiden
name). They had a son JOHN born in RI c 1816-1818,
daughters MARY and LYDIA born RI circa 1820, and a
daughter PHEBE born RI in 1826.

I know according to deeds in Coventry and W Greenwich,
RI and censuses in NY that the family seems to have
moved from RI to upstate NY between 1828-1830.

According to a deed in Coventry, RI in 1810 THOMAS'
middle name was GORDON (relation to GORTONS?). In this
deed he was GIVEN land from ELIZABETH LADD LEWIS & her husband SOLOMON LEWIS. From the sounds of the deed, he may have been a relative of Elizabeth, possibly a son. All three principles in the deed are listed as living
in Voluntown, CT. In a previously found deed, Elizabeth bought the same tract of land from her father JOHN LADD in 1785, in which she was listed as a single woman. If Thomas is her son, he may have been illegitimate.

I found other deeds where THOMAS had dealings with
other Ladds of the JOHN/ELIZABETH LADD family members
(as per the Warren Ladd book on the Ladd family); sometimes selling to one another and as witnesses at other
times.

Some of the other family names mentioned in the deeds
as well as the Warren Ladd book are: LEWIS, PARKER, HAWKINS & BURLESON.

It seems pretty obvious that my THOMAS LADD is
well-connected to this wide-ranging Ladd family of RI,
but I am unable to prove how.

Thank you.
Bill Ladd
Cortland, NY
Hello!
I have been searching for Elizabeth Greene for a very long time. I know only bits and pieces. She was the mother of my ancestor Hannah Whitford and was born around 1730-1740 in Warwick, Rhode Island. She is mentioned in various vital records, etc., as Hannah's mother. She is also mentioned in relation to Hannah as Elizabeth Reynolds, and as the wife of Pasco Whitford. Apparently she had a brief marriage to Hannah's father and was remarried to a Reynolds.

Hannah was born in 1757 and married Stephen Capwell, a revolutionary soldier. Hannah and Stephen moved to Factoryville, PA and joined a contingent of Reynolds living there.

I'd appreciate any information.
Thanks,
Debbie
Lowry GREEN / GREENE in Kent Co., Rhode Island, in 1830

The Index to the 1830 Federal Census shows a Lowry GREEN / GREENE in Coventry (Kent Co., Rhode Island)(p. 301 in the Census Schedule).

I think this is an ancestor of mine who moved temporarily from Dutchess Co (NY) and then returned to Dutchess County by 1835. Lowry's father was George Green, who was established in Dutchess Co. at least by 1800. This George Green probably was born somewhere in Rhode Island on or about 1 March 1763. George may have had a brother named Solomon Green; another relative (brother or father) named Richard Green.

My supposition is that Lowry Green relocated in Coventry to help, or make contact with, grandparents or other relatives. I'm especially interested in discovering if there was a Lowry /Lowrey / Lourie family there in Coventry that is related.

Thanks for any help you can give on this.
Bob Green

I am trying to discover more about the Dyer Family of Nooseneck Manor in Rhode Island. Does anyone know were the manor was situated and whether it still exists.
The land was held by the family by grant from CharlesII. I am particularly interested in Capt Nathaniel Dyer of the Rhode Island Navy who married Abigail Herrick at Stonnington Connecticut 12 Nov 1775.
Does anyone know of this man or his home?
He had a son Joseph Chessborough Dyer who was born 15 Nov 1780 at Stonnington Point, Connecticut. Again does anyone know anything of this. Am I correct in believing this was near the coastal border of the two states

looking for my moms family, Tammy Marlow

I don’t want to say that this is more important than anyone else’s request. I lost my mother when I was three her name was Tammy Marlow, my father’s family knows very little about my mother’s family. I’m 21 now and having a baby of my own, and I would just like to fill in that side of my family tree. My mother was married to a man named Steve Crowley, and had another daughter with him by the name of Jessica. I’m not sure if by the same man she had an older daughter by the name of Sabrina. I know she grew up in RI, and that her mother or grandmother use to adopted kids or had a foster home. That’s about all I know except that my sister Jessica’s father died, so she went to live with her uncle, who is a lawyer. I believe his name is Richard or William Crowley. Any help would be great!!!!! Thanks Mary Carter Mells_mellon@hotmail.com

He was adopted by a couple named Anderson and he was a milkman.
(I know the bio dads name but it wasn't revealed at the time. His last name was Bond.)
The baby had red hair at birth.
Years ago I sent a letter to RI Social Services asking that it be put in his record in case he ever looked for bio family info, he can contact me. Never got a response and don't even know if they bothered to put it in his file.
(Or if the adoption was handled by them.)
Maybe Providence but not sure.
I just called Ma and she said the Anderson's that adopted him lived in Hoxie, a part of West Warwick.

My grandmother was Maria T Garberg. We knew her as Ida Maria, but I have found obit's listing her as Maria T. She married Thomas REGAN and lived in East Greenwich until her death. She had five children, now all deceased. I found her in the EGreenwich census and it shows her being born in Providence. She was born in 1871 and died in 1956. She is buried in St Patrick's Cemetary in EG.

Some other relatives buried at St Patrick's are: Raymond and Arlean Garberg, Henry J and Marion L (GANNON) Garberg. My mom used to refer to Raymond as her cousin, but I don't know if that was first cousin or not.

I haven't been able to find her in the Providence census. I'm hoping to learn the names of her parents. The EG census notes her mother being born in Providence and her father in Sweden.
