Philippe, I am working on this for you.I have uncovered 3
daughters of Richard. It is very tricky finding all the info on this.I looked at the 1920 census to find out that particular info.I have his death certificate. The witness to
his death was his wife. The obit has a Robert Bradley as a
poll bearer.Sadly it only mentions the bearers, but I am
sure there were other relatives alive at the time. You can
reply to this message at my email.Tom D
tomdoan3@yahoo.com

Hi Lois
I will need to ask around. I was very young when my great-grandmother Rutherford died. She had stayed at our house in the early 60's and I believe and she passed away a short time after that. It could have been in the late 50's but I think not. I was born in 1954 so I was very young at the time.
I know that she (Jane) had an apartment in or near North Smithfield, RI which is where Jane's daughter, Jesse lived until very late in her life. My grandparents (Shallis) lived next to my mother's brother, Albert Shallis in the same town. I will need to talk to my older sister and brother to see what they remember. I actually have an old bible that as handed down from Jane Rutherford to my grandmother, Jesse Shallis(Rutherford) from the late 1800's.

Actually, my mother's middle name was Drysdale (Jean Schaefer(Shallis)so I would be interested in the Drysdale tree. If you want to send an email, it might be easier to commincate. It is schaefer54@comcst.net.

Bob Schaefer

Hi Bobkat513:
I can't tell you how happy I am to hear from you. I have been trying for the last two years to find some snippet of information to lead to a contact. My grandmother Mary Drysdale McKinnon was Jane Drysdale Rutherfords' younger sister. I think that would make us cousins (3rd or 4th) once removed, not quite sure how that works. Just last week I revisited the message boards, thinking about updating info. If you read all the replys, you will have noticed I received large amounts of info from Mindfogg2, she worked very hard digging out all kinds of details for me. I did send off two letters to ladies I thought might be related, but perhaps they didn't get to them.
The information I am trying to get is regarding my grandmother, and Jane's mother. Her name was Janet Smart (maiden name) Drysdale (1st husband) Pearce (2nd husband?)
The very last piece of info. I have on her is a border crossing on Dec. 5, 1924 accompanied by my grandmother Mary, going to Jane in Rhode Island permanently. I would like to know when she died, and where she is buried. She was almost 87 at the time. I would also be very interested in the story around her marriage to Mr. Pearce.
When I was around 10, my parents and I came to Providence to visit relatives, but I can't remember exactly who. We also went to a cemetery, but can't remember names for that either.
I also have information on the Drysdale family back to about the late 1700's if you are interested in any of it.

Regards:
Lois McKinnon Wheaton
I'm not sure if the city directory info I gave you with John J. Oates, is the same man that's in your photo, but the name seemed to be in the same time frame. I would assume that the 3 men are related some how, since they live and work together. Thought you might want to make note of the info in case any of them fit into your family tree at some point.

You might try emailing your photo to The Archives in Providence, R.I. They might know about the Irish Volunteers or the uniform.
I just realised something. John J. Oates was wearing a uniform and going by the belt, it was an Irish Volunteers uniform. To the best of my knowledge, the Irish Volunteers were only formed around 1914, so the photo is a little younger.

I think I need to find out more about the Irish Volunteers uniform.

Jamm7, thanks for looking in to that for me. Your info has answered 1 question, but now has me asking another few - is that my John J. Oates, and if so, what is his connection to the other Oates men you listed.

But anyway, thank you for your much appreciated help. At least now I know the photo was taken any time after 1893 and probably before my great grandfather's first wife's death in 1904.

My father found some old photos and amongst them were 2 photos taken by William Mills & Son Photographic Art Studio, 58 & 60 Arcade, Providence and Olneyville, R.I.

One was a picture of a young gentleman in uniform and has the following hand written on the back "John J. Oates, exercise Captain of the Irish Volunteers". I know that my great grandfathers 1st wife was a Bridget Oates from Northyard in Co. Roscommon, Ireland, so this man is obviously a relation of hers.

The 2nd photo is a portrait and appears older. This has the above mention address of the photographers and no other details.

Could anyone give me a rough idea of when these photos might have been taken, from the name of the photographer? Are there Oates descendant's in Providence?

Hi Brendan, I don't know if the d/c would list Mary's nee name or not. Ancestry's vital records indexes are somtimes mis-leading. Plus, when you're using them for Priovidence co. research, it's only for the city of Providence not the other towns or locales in the county. A nephew in Iowa and I are doing our Tague tree. Dave has all our documented findings. We found a descendent of of one of my grandmother, Johanna/Josephine (O'Connell Tague's sisters. Dianne has been to the old family farm site and has pictures from her many trips to Ireland. Tho Daniel O'Connell may be from the same area, we don't think there's a connection. Dick

OK Barbara, We know William & Emma were still kicking up their heels at the Saturday night grange dances in 1930 Elizabeth, Union co, NJ. Might want to contact the local area gene societies and the Elizabeth library for any death record assistance they can provide. Do you know their religious affiliation? In R.I., vital records are maintained at the town level and that's difficult because there are a lot of rinky-dink towns around Pawtucket. But since William was of Irish descent, he may have been Catholic. That could narrow down your search for a church wedding & baptism request. Sponsors for these events were usually family members or close famnily friends. Finding a brother as best man or godfather would be of great help. The 1900 2nd ward of Pawtucket has a John & Mary Mc Dade household. Both born Ire. and John is enumerated as coming over circa 1889 also. Could be an older sibling. They also have daughters Emma & Cassie (Catherine?) Dick

I was born & raised in Clinton county Iowa Brendan. Currently residing in south Texas, the armpit capitol of the world. My Tagues were from county Leitrim, my O'Connells from county Kerry. G-gfather Lawrence O'Connell was a hedge row teacher over there. I found the marriage record for my g-gparents John & Mary (McLoughlin) Tague and the baptisms of two of their first born in co. Leitrim from about 1829 - 1833 from LDS films. As for the d/c, yes the record said Cornelius Pierce. Since we don't know who the informant was, or their knowledge of the family history, we have no idea how accurate it is. We have to find out where Mort & Catherine may have been living when the marriage occurred. Need to find them on the 1870 & 1880 census records. I'm still working on it.
Hi Barbara, We're all looking for information on our ancestors and we all have varying amounts of data on them. To avoid unnecessary duplication of research effort, when we post, it should be for a specific record that will further our own research. You probably have the 1900 census data for your Mc Dade family so what is accomplished if you receive it again? Being specific tells your volunteer exactly what you need and by the nature & content of your post, if anyone else is researching your lines, they will find you. And that's a bonus. Have a safe & rewarding week-end. Dick

Thanks Brendan, I had finally found it after my last response but was still trying to come up with something for you so didn't e-mail & tell you. Not being critical of your request, but if you're going to reference a record, tell it like it is, not as it should be. That said Brendan, here is what I've found. Catherine was on the 1930 census indexed on Ancestry as Catherine DONAGHUE, 85, Ireland and living at 5 Ham Street in the city if Providence. (NARA film pg 168A). Still living there when she died but she died in St. Joseph's hospital in the city of Providence. On the death certificate her father was Cornelius Pierce. The space for her mother's name was blank. A genealogy copy of the death record is being mailed to me Monday. I will then forward it on to you. Dick

Hi Dick,

Golfing yesterday, lovely weather, I wish I played as well as the weather. My granduncle Pat Stephen O'Connor was a Monsignor in Mason City, his brother John Bernard was a doctor in Oelwein, next brother Eugene was a Supreme Court judge. The O'Connor inc building in Oelwein is called after John Bernard. I located John Bernard's daughter living in New Mexico, her husband Cecil Boreland had died in 1951.

I talked to her on the phone last year, she is 97 years old, my mothers only living first cousin, I put the two of them on the phone together, made all the years researching worth while.

I have a good few O'Connells in my family tree, you must give me the info on your O'Connell's and I will see what I can find. My grandfather's sister Ellen's Godfather was Maurice O'Connell the grandson of Daniel O'Connell the Liberator who lived in Derrynane House.

I am still checking census recorts 1870, 1880 for Catherine & Morty, nothing yet, I think her father never emigrated.

I wonder what parents names were on Morty's death cert 1905, it should be Daniel, I have not discovered Daniel's wife yet.

Morty joined the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) in 1861, there should be a file on him in the Archives. He left in 1868 and emigrated.

Brendan

Daniels family tree is well documented in the National Library in Ireland. His grandmother was known as Maire Dubh O'Donoghue, she had 22 children, plenty of room for many ancestors.

Send me on what you have on the O'Connells and Teague families, Leitrim records are very good.

Brendan

Hi Dick,

I am probably a little bit like yourself, I helped a lady trace her ancestors in England today, she was just looking in the wrong place, using the wrong criteria, I am at university studying genealogy, a 3 year degree course, it is so very interesting, a really good lecturer, it is so hard in Ireland to research back before the 1800's, just a total lack of records unless your ancestors were landed gentry or famous.

I am really interested in Morty as he was my GG grandfathers brother, his father was Daniel and his father was Mortimer "Morto".

I only found him because I was researching Rhode Island cemeterey records for someone else. I could not believe that I came accross him, I have a James born 1832 a Patrick born 1842 and nothing in between, I am sure his father Daniel took his trousers off in between.

I am pretty much an expert on Irish records, but not great on US records, I have a whole family of O'Connors in Iowa, who I spent a year on, I picked up a living first cousin of my mother living in New Mexico, I put the two of them on the phone to each other, first time they have ever talked, definately the highlight of my last years research, one is aged 97 the other 88.

I have also picked up my grandmother Margaret Keating's brother's son living in Portugal, his father married a Countess, we had a reunion two years ago, the 3 living first cousins, 89, 90 and the Portuguese 95, he is still alive aged 97, his wife is also still alive, the same age.

Maybe that is why we love so much what we do, we are not harming anyone, we are just bringing joy and happiness to future generations.

How do I get Morty's marriage cert, I know he sadly had no children, but I do have his wife's family to trace. You reckon the name is Pierce.

I have two sons living in Colorado Springs.

Brendan

Richard K Bradley Search of American family

Hello, I'm Philippe Vanderdonckt from Belgium and doing research on a man who was KIA in the WWII. His name was Gilbert A Malrait. His story and what I have found till now can be see here http://users.skynet.be/2ltmalrait_gilbert/indexE.htm on the tribute site I build on the B-24 bomber crew wher Gilbert was the Navigator. Now what i'm looking for is to find if possible American relatives of Gilbert who must still live at the Pawtucket, RI area. Richard K Bradley was born in 1886 at blackburn, england. Later he emigrated to Pawtucket in the the US. His parents were Robert Kenyon and Elizabeth Cutter.
I think this Bradley could be the uncle of 2LT Gilbert Malrait, Gilbert was born from Albert Malrait (from Ronse, Belgium) and Anna Ellen Bradley (from Blackburn, England). Anna Ellen Bradley (Nellie) was I hope the sister of Richard K Bradley. Anna Ellen Bradley passed away here in Belgium in the late 20's. I'm looking for maybe children or grandchildren of Richard K Bradley who must be maybe still live at the Pawtucket area. Can you give me more details on the next generation of this Richard K Bradley who lived in the 40's in Elderstreet 29, Pawtucket, RI see in attachment. I'm searching to find family of Richard K Bradley because they must have maybe pics or other documents on 2LT Gilbert Malrait because prior his enlistment he was living with his uncle from Dec, 1939 to Sept, 1940. I hope there is more information on Richard K Bradley and his direct descendents in RI or in the other States. Sorry for my English I'm Flemish.

Sincerly.

Philippe Vanderdonckt from Belgium.
See the picture of Anna Ellen Bradley and Albert Malrait and Gilbert Malrait

Hello, I'm Philippe Vanderdonckt from Belgium and doing research on a man who was KIA in the WWII. His name was Gilbert A Malrait. His story and what I have found till now can be see here http://users.skynet.be/2ltmalrait_gilbert/indexE.htm on the tribute site I build on the B-24 bomber crew wher Gilbert was the Navigator. Now what i'm looking for is to find if possible American relatives of Gilbert who must still live at the Pawtucket, RI area. While surfing on the internet I found your name on "Rootsweb" in connection with the item below:
Bradley 1886 now blackburn,england>pawtucket, rhode island>
al parents are Robert Kenyon and Elizabeth Cutter;

I think this Bradley could be the uncle of 2LT Gilbert Malrait, Gilbert was born from Albert Malrait (from Ronse, Belgium) and Anna Ellen Bradley (from Blackburn, England). Anna Ellen Bradley (Nellie) was the sister of Richard K Bradley. I hope you can give me more information on Richard K Bradley and his direct descendents in RI or in the other States. Sorry for my English I'm Flemish.

Sincerly.

Philippe Vanderdonckt
Circa 1863 envelope sent to Lillie B CHASE of Valley Falls from Vienna, Austria

I recently found a photograph of an old envelope that was sent to Lillie B CHASE of Valley Falls from Vienna, Austria in circa 1863. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on CHASE, select the one with Valley Falls, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I am unable to find Lillie B CHASE in a census or similar source and wondered if someone more familiar with Providence County can find her. I believe that Vienna may be her or her parents' birthplace and this envelope may be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

Hello Dick,
I don't know when or where he died, I've tried to find out but have had no luck. I know that my grandmother was born in RI and she married my grandfather in NJ. I don't know how or when she came to NJ, but I do know my grandfather (Gustave Meyer) lived his whole life in NJ. She (Emma Meyer) died abt 1951 when I was only 3 yrs. old. My grandfather remarried a year later, so aside from some old pictures I have, that's all I know. All of my father's family are gone now so there's no one to ask questions about his family.
Barbara

Trying to find the Haggerty/ Robideaux(may be an alternate spelling) connection in Cranston RI. My grandfather Bernard P. Haggerty and grandmother Ethel Goffe Haggerty had a french speaking mother or grandmother living in their house as late as 1950. Not sure whose mother or grandmother she was for sure but am leaning towards it being Bernard's relative. Any help making the next connection will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
Susan

Hi Roy - thanks for your reply. I think my g grandmother Agnes MARTIN nee Hanley had a brother William HANLEY who was born on 20 June 1866 in Salmons Lane, Cloontuskert, Ballyleague. Parents were Patrick HANLEY and Mary A nee CONNORS/CONNELLY dependent on which of her daughters' marriage certificates you read. William went on to marry Ellen O'Sullivan in Providence and remained there until his death on 8 Dec 1921. I have been unable to trace any birth records for Agnes or her sister Annie Maria either in Ireland or the US although I believe they were probably both born in Ireland around 1860-1868. I know Agnes married Thomas MARTIN in Providence and returned to the UK whilst Annie married John Joseph HAFEY and remained in Rhode Island. Family memory suggests there was a definite link to Roscommon and also that there may have been a priest in the family. Unfortunately there were a lot of HANLEYs in Roscommon and the relevant records seem to be very scarce. I have been working on the theory that Mary A CONNELLY (hopefully my g g grandmother) was the daughter of Michael CONNELLY, Hugh's brother, who was married to Catherine MCGARTY. Both Michael and Hugh were born in Roscommon. On your Kilgefin branch are there any other surnames that turn up in the area? Perhaps there is a link on the Irish side as looking at the map it seemed to be quite a country area and I suspect a lot of the marriages were between locals. Hope we can help each other.
Hi ljay,

I came across the Gannon/Connelly family because they are buried in the same section of St. Francis cemetery as my Gannon family.

St.Francis- Sec.16, LOT 89, EAST 1/2, Grave 2.
Section 16 Lot 89 East Half

1) Mary Gannon 4/10/1874
2) Jenny Gannon 6/14/1890
3) Thomas Gannon 6/1/1891 * Owner
4) John J Gannon 1/21/1892
5) Bridget Gannon 6/23/1903
6) Thomas Gannon 3/18/1904
7) Isabel Gannon 10/19/1935

possible connection:
Section 16 Lot 18 East Half

1) Child Connelly 1879
2) Hugh Connelly 1891 * Owner
3) Catherine Connelly 1893
4) Charles J Gannon 1/1923
5) Charles H Gannon 3/1/1958
6) Cleona Gannon 12/11/1973
7) Francis Gallagher 1/2/1994

Section 16 Lot 19 West Half

1) Elizabeth Gannon 2/1/1913
2) Charles B Gannon 12/15/1915

I have done some research on this family but I was never able to make a connection. All the information that I have about this family is in my original post. I have good reason to believe that my Gannon family came from Roscommon but I have not been able to make a direct connection. Another branch of my family(Lohan(Logan),Banahan) came from the parish of Kilgefin which is next Cloontuskert. I'd be interested to know what your connections to Cloontuskert, Strokestown and Lanesborough are?

You can contact me via this board or my email.
Hope to hear from you.

Roy Gannon
lgannon01@yahoo.com
