My husbands Great Aunt many times removed was Ida Pollard. She was married to a Lott Hazel. They may have had a child that died young, because I vaguely remember a baby with the last name of Hazel buried in the same cemetery, but I had no proof to connect her to anyone. They are buried in the family cemetery on Kimble St. Do you knbow if your Lott was ever married to Ida Pollard? I know they are not a direct line, but I do like to add as much info as I can on any family member. Thanks for any help,

Sara

My Great grandfather's was Captain (Anderson/ Andressan) Lockhart and his Father's name was Peter. The wives were Christianna and Leah (learer). I cannot find any information on Peter's parents. Is it possible that you could tell me how to locate this info or point me in the right direction? By the the way the brief history on Millbrook was quite informative.
Please respond if possible.

Emma

Hi, Gavin
Redd/Red is a common name here no matter what your racial makeup. I have a Darling Red in 1880 Census, South Carolina, Aiken, Windsor District 20, Page 2. He is listed as a mulatto male 46 years of age with a wife Louisa and several children listed also.
What was once called a Township here is now listed as a District. The district lines moved over time as the population grew and of course people moved.
Do you have a Census with your grandmother on it? Were her brothers listed also? Is that how you got there names? What was her age on the census you have with her listed on it? What were her brothers ages? Do you have a year of birth for your grandmother or her brothers even approximate?
Here is how I have searched a problem like yours. As you are using Ancestry put the name you want in the search section, if you do not know the date of birth that is ok, then hit search, ignore the results, look to the left of the results, click on census, ignore the results look to the left and pick the year census you want and click on that, once the results come up scroll down and you will find the states listed click on South Carolina once those results come up you will see the districts listed. Mill brook will be one of those also Hammond and Windsor and Mountmornci. I mention the other districts as they are the ones I would check first. You must flip through each page you cannot run the search engine here. If you find one that looks likely save it to your computer and note the district and page number you found it on. When I find a person I am looking for I look forward and backward several pages on a census. I have found family groups tended to group together.
I would be happy to try to help you but I need some of the information I cited above to search. If any of them were buried here and you know where I would be willing to do a grave look up for you and send you a picture if I can find the headstone. Here is my e-mail address if I can help you.
walbringd@bellsouth.net
Jan

The University of South Carolina Aiken Campus has a room devoted to the mills if you can go there you might find what you are looking for they also have some things on line. Another source is the Aiken County Musuem (please excuse any spelling errors it is late and I am sleepy). I know they have some of the old publications from the mill for the employees that have pictures. Those would be in the Gregg division of the building. My grandfather did the publication of those and I have found pictures of him in them. Hope this helps.
Jan

Cynthia,

Thanks! That was just what I wanted. Pictures of the headstones would be appreciated.

Any chance the name was J G Steadman, not J C?

I have quite a database of the Steadman family and am currently re-working my records of the SC and NC families. And this fellow just does not fit into any of the families that I know about.

http://johnlisle.org/stedman/tng

There might not be other Steadmans, but there may be daughter lines. They had a daughter Florence, born in the 1850s. I do not know who she might have married.

What were some of the large families in that cemetery? Could you please give me a couple of names so that I can try to understand who the other people there were?

Is the church still in existence? When I looked at the space on a map I did not see a nearby church.

Thanks,
john.

Cynthia,

I am trying to locate information a Johnson or Jonathan Steadman (1821-1893) and his family (wife was named Lavisa/Lavicy/Vicy Creed (1818-1891)) in Aiken county.

I have had a friend suggest that they were buried at the Tabernacle Cemetery. And maybe other family members.

Can you help?

thanks,

John Lisle
Nashua, NH

John,
To see it on Google maps look for Kitchings Mill, SC. Follow Hwy 4 toward Springfield til you get to Tabernacle Road. Do the street view at corner of Hwy 4 and Tabernacle and you can see the church.

Check out Findagrave.com for a few listings of Tabernacle church. I don't have my list with me right now but Kitchings, Seiglers (I think) and Brodies are common names for the cemetery. I will get back to you on that.

I'll have to check out the stone for confirmation on initial.

I believe I have a history on the church that I will have to take a look at also.

I'll be in touch,
Cynthia

Hi, I am looking for information on the Millbrook Township that was in early Aiken County, S.C. Does anyone know where this name came from and I've seen in some of the census records where there were mixed blood families that lived in this area, what was the ethnicity mostly associated with the Millbrook Township? Any information anyone may have on this, I would be very thankful if you could help me. Thanks, Gavin.

I am searching for living descendants of E.J.C. Wood. Known as Charles, he was a founder of Aiken,SC. Several historical markers in Aiken Co. refer to him. He was also known as Dr. Wood, an honorary title given him since he opened the first pharmacy in the county.

Mr.Wood also kept a diary about his family. Excerpts from this diary appear in the book "Wandering in the Wilderness" His son, Ellie (Elliot) Wood published these excerpts. Ellie was a Virginian.

I am interested in the entire diary. Can anyone help? Are there any Wood descendents out there? Pls reply to this thread or to my email address andybrandon33@hotmail.com

Thanks, Andy Brandon

She lived in Sleepy Hollow but the family moved to Ellenton sometime between 1910 and 1920. My email is kscherry2000@verizon.net. My grandfather also had an older brother, Charles Cherry. He was the first born (approx 1890) of 11 children and died an infant (approx 1893). He may also be in that cemetery. If there are any Cherrys other than Charles and Minnie, they could be relatives.

Thanks for your help,

Kevin

I've hit a serious brick wall with my Spires line. Were these scotts and spires from the vaucluse area? Off the top of my head, a few names are Hugh Spires, Jr son of Hugh Edwards Spires, wife Nettie Scott. Nettie was the daughter of Mamie Cato and I believe Robert Oliver Scott. Hugh Sr's father was Charlie Spires and mother Julia Eubanks. Mamies parents were Addie Franklin and Benjamin Cato. Do any of those names sound familiar? There was another Mamie Scott in Vaucluse who was also related somehow through marriage. There were also some Scotts Milledge Allen Scott, James or Jim Scott.

Hi,
Sleepy Hollow is in an area of Aiken County, SC just off HWY 28 between New Ellenton and Pumpkin Center. One of the roads that run through it is Gray Mare Hollow Rd and another is Chime Bell. There isn't anything there but an old grocery store and some cemetaries. But it is very pretty rolling hills. The area is being built up in some areas with new homes.
My family is from there too.Boyd, Low, Blackman
Jo

Looking for info on the family of William Rhett Wilson(Nov 15 1891 in Hampton Co area. He died May 20 1973 in Aiken Co SC.) It appears from his obit that he was married twice. I know his first wife was Belva V Wilson(July 12 1891 in Colleton Co SC and she died Mar 23 1956 in Aiken Co SC) William's obit lists a widow Mrs Jessie Heape Wilson. The obit also lists a daughter Maude W Starrick. It appears she was married to William Herbert Starrick(Sept 8 1896-Sept 3 1969) Williams obit also listed a son Woodrow R Wilson of Langley a step daughter Mrs Nan All of Allendale and a foster daughter Mrs D H Jones of Lynwood-Bath.
