Update to message posted July 11, 1999. Names of the twins were reversed. James A. Dillingham died February 20, 1905. His twin brother, John W. Dillingham died March 31, 1902. I apologize for the error. Both brothers died of consumption. Capt. John Dillingham and his brother, James, came to Anderson late 1880s/early 1890s. They worked with Messrs. McGee & Dillingham, liverymen. John was elected as a member of the Anderson police force and James enlisted in the First SC Volunteer regiment during the Spanish-American war. James, after returning from the war, went back to work for McGee & Dillingham, but soon afterward became deputy sheriff, for which he became best known. John was elected chief of police. When John died in 1902, James was elected to succeed him. James served as chief of police for several years, but resigned to resume old job as deputy sheriff. In March 1903, James became too weak to do his job and resigned. He did not work again. James' obituary states: "Mr. Dillingham was generally respected for a stern, silent manhood and bravery that made him a terror to evildoers all over the upper half of the State. It was frequently remarked that he did not know the meaning of the word fear."
