Most (probably all) of the upstate Fosters came from Virginia- most from Amelia County, VA. My great great great grandfather was Lt. John Foster of the American Revolution- he was born in Amelia County, VA in 1739 and died in Greenville County SC in 1787.Lt John Foster married Eleanor Collins- one of their sons was named James Hoggatt Foster - born in 1772. His younger brother- Col. Robert Singleton Crowe Foster b. 1779 - is my great great grandfather.

My grandfather moved from Greenville to Piedmont- my father was born in Piedmont in 1899.
