I am looking for any information on a "Miss Caldwell" b abt 1820, who married my Allen Thomas Carter, b1820, near the Lodge/Erhardt area. He married 1st wife Caldwell after 1840 - assuming this since he is not listed as HOH in 1840 census of Colleton Co. Family written history says wife Caldwell died along with her baby. Allen Thomas then moved in Baxley, GA after her death to live with kin and in 1848 married again to Rebecca Crosby. They ended up in Florida with 8 children. If you have a Caldwell / Carter in your line please contact me. Any leads will be appreciated. Thanks.

I visited the Calhoun County Museum this week and found information on the Patricks. "Bell" was ecidently Isabella. Her father was Henry Jacob Geiger. Henry's parents were Alexander Geiger and Dorothy Kinsler. Alexander's father was Abraham Geiger. The reason I am interested is because it has been told that a Mr. Patrick was a direct descendent of Emily Geiger, the Rev War heroine. I believe that the Mr. Patrick was William Henry Patrick. This info is online under Emily Geiger's Defense. Henry Jacob Geiger was sheriff of Lexington County. His wife was Charlotte Heath Kaigler. The museum has much genealogy on the Patrick family. Have you heard of Emily Geiger as being connected to the Patricks?

I don't know much about the Patrick side, but I did know their son William Henry Patrick before he passed in 1970. He stayed with his son Henry & his wife in Summerville. He had closed up the old house in Bamberg because he could no longer live alone. Mr. Patrick wrote out a family tree of his mother's Geiger side (he said she was called 'Bell'), but didn't write down any info of his father's side. I later found a book at the Dorchester Co. library (now called Seago Library on Trolley Road in Summerville) that was named The Geigers of South Carolina by Percy L. Geiger. The Geiger ascendant line went back to about 1715. My husband was a step-grandson to Mr. Patrick. We learned from my mother-in-law that Mr. Patrick had donated his father's dental tools to the Calhoun County library which is in St. Matthews, SC. I've always wanted to go see them, but we haven't made a special trip there - just always passing through to another destination. I dk if the library still has the tools or not. Is there anything else more specific that you need? I have some birth & death dates. I would be interested in knowing if you have anything on William Henry Patrick's family. There are quite a few Patricks in the Dorchester Co. area near St. George.

Interested in information about Richard Carter, born ca. Dec 1860 in Barnwell Co., SC. There are many Carter families in the Barnwell and Bamberg Co., SC areas but I am unable to connect Richard to them. He appears on the 1880 census as a farm laborer living in the household of Isaac and Elizabeth Carter Rentz (she doesn't appear to be old enough to be his mother by an earlier marriage but is probably kin?).

Richard Carter marries Rebecca H. Beard aft 1881 in Barnwell Co., SC and is found later in the 1900-1930 censuses of Richmond Co., GA living in Augusta. Rebecca is the daughter of William Thomas Beard and Elizabeth R.
It just so happens that I knew William (Bill) Kirkland and Kate Kirkland in my teen years (65-70 yrs. ago). They were a little older than me and I didn't know them all that well but do remember the both of them. I also remember that in my later yrs. the fact that Kate married a BLOUNT. I believe her husband was related to Mr. R.T. Blount who lived up on the lake and had a trailer court up there that he rented out to folks. I also remember that Bill was a very gooooood football player for Bamberg High.
Sarah Herron Cain bambergmama1@aol.com

John Kirkland's first wife was Mary Jane Winifred Best, but since this such an old post you probably already have that info. When I read your post I wanted to reply because your Mom Gloria and My Mom Kathleen Fail were best friends in high school. About fifteen years ago we were able to visit with your Mom and have a little reunion for the two. I just started doing genealogy then and got to visit two of the sisters: Mary Muckenfuss, and Shirley Fine. They really enjoyed the visit and Mom talked about it for months. I have an old High School picture of the two if you would like a copy. Also Lena Huthmacher was my grand aunt. Bob Huthmacher

Following are some notes from the Orange Parish Roads Commissioners meeting minutes. Looks like they held meetings about every six months.

October 6, 1856 - Tavern license requested by Jesse Wessinger, Jr. for a tavern in Branchville was granted after debate.

October 5, 1857 - Application received and license granted to Jesse Wessinger for tavern in house in Branchville for one year.

Note: Jesse died in December 1857.

April 5, 1858 - Tavern license of Jesse Wessinger in Branchville transferred to E. A. Wessinger at same place with certain provision about bond.

October 4, 1858 - Tavern license issued to E. A. Wessinger.

I didn't do any research past 1858. Could be information about the license of E. A. Wessinger being transferred to Joab.

I pass through Branchville several times a year (I live near Charleston, but grew up in Aiken County). I've visited several of the cemeteries, but had no luck in finding a Wessinger gravesite. I've never had the good luck of being there when the railroad museum is open. I keep hoping someday to find in open and someone might be able to provide information on where the taverns were located and who owned them.

Richard

Richard, I checked the 1860 census. [Ancestry has Joab's name as Chomy and has Jesse as a male] The Post Office listed for Joab & Elizabeth is Branchville, Orangeburg District, SC. I'm betting she was buried there - maybe at the Tavern!
Elizabeth

That explains why, in a family record that I was given many years ago, it says that Joab's first wife was a Mrs. Cannon. The cousin who wrote those records had a generation confused.

The Wessinger children were young when their Mother died. And it was just as the War was starting. What a scary time for them.

I wish you luck in your search for Jesse's grave. Branchville is an interesting town but I only go through on my way to the beach - never stopped to look for graves!

Since the 1860 census said that Joab was a tavern keeper in Orangeburg, I'm wondering if that was perhaps the same tavern that Jesse had. As you know, the towns are close together.

Elizabeth

The 3 Wessinger children were:

1. Louisa F. Wessinger, born July 02, 1848, died about 1880. Maybe in the Elloree area.

2. Ella Hamner Wessinger, born April 11, 1850 died April 05, 1934 - she married David Thomas Livingston. Ella and David are buried at Trinity Lutheran Church, Elloree, SC.

3. Jessie Elizabeth Ann Wessinger, born September 27, 1853 (her tombstone is listed on findagrave with a birth year of 1854), died October 04, 1896 - She married Peter Govan Cannon. Jessie and Peter are buried at Sunnyside Cemetery, Orangeburg, SC.

Richard

Joab W. was the only Moseley who left Aiken for Orangeburg so there would be no Moseley burial ground in Orangeburg. Three Wessinger children are listed with them in 1860 - where did they go? That is probably where their parents were buried. Joab and wife Julia Dorothy Bull had 7 children, two girls and five boys. The Wessinger children are not listed with them in 1870 census.
Thanks for your reply.
Elizabeth

The only information I have in my notes is that Elizabeth died January 21, 1862 and is buried in Orangeburg. She may be in an unmarked grave or in a cemetery/plot of the Moseley family.

I've never found a grave site for Jesse.

The only additional information I have on Joab Westfield Moseley, Jr. is that he is listed as a 2nd lieutenant in the 2nd platoon of Company I, 2nd Artillery South Carolina Volunteers, also known as "The Edisto Rifles."

Richard

Carrie Moody Frye was one of the sisters of my great grandfather, John Moody. My mother told me just last night-May 15, 2010, about her and other sisters of John Moody, my parents knew them all.
In my notes, I have that it was sister Nora that was married to Lonnie Frye, but it's not that clear. Lonnie and Carrie/Nora, whichever one it was, had a bunch of children: Lonnie jr, Ernest, Virginia Frye Spurlock, who is apparently still alive and living in Charleston (one of my uncles knows her), William, Ruby...there may have been more but my mother ran out of names. We talked about where she lived; my parents remember all this stuff.
Your relatives in Bamberg were the Moodys, the Sanders, and the Worshams. John Moody's parents were Gus Moody and Sallie Alexander.

I didnt get any other details about Nora and Carrie, since I'm pursuing the Moodys and Sanders. You can email me at onewally@aol.com if you see this message.

AOR
