I am trying to find information about John F Poyas, born 1850, Summerville Charleston South Carolina. On his death certificate his father is listed as John Poyas of Charleston South Carolina. John F was a mulatto, and I believe his father was his white owner. I believe John F was a slave on the Hazel Head Plantation. There was a John and Emma Poyas lasted as owners, and there was a slave listed as John, but I do not know for sure if it is John F Poyas who was my great-great grand father. Any information about John F, John and Emma Poyas or the Hazel Head Plantation would be much appreciated.

Thank You

I am seeking out person who might have any information on SLAVE ORIGINS. I am a descendant of Elias M Wigfall (born about 1810). Obviously named after his owner in Charleston (St Thomas/St Denis Parish). His son carried the same name and moved or was moved/sold to Waynesboro, Wayne County, Tennessee. There may also a few Wigfall's in that area.

I have noted there are one or two person (slave owners) with the same or very similar name, from the same city/parish/area, which I must deduce can't be by coincidence.

Any positive information would be appreciated.

My grandmother died in 1924 and I've found two death certificates for her, dated the same day. One is in the county of Charleston and the other is in Berkely county. The same undertaker appears to have filled them out. Other than a simple error, I can't figure out why there would be two.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for a good link to obituaries in 1924? I'm trying to find one for my grandmother - she died 7 Aug 1924.

There are Ogletrees and Harpers that connect in Alabama, to Judge John Jackson Harper. My grandfather James W. Harper was b.1826 in KY though. Some list him as having descended from that family, but I have no proof. Also they say he was of English Noble descent, but my grandfather's Uncle Jim told him that his father said they were of Irish descent.I am not so sure we are nobility either. Do you have connections to Harpers in Alabama? You mention Charleston, my grandfather said we have Cameron relatives there. Dora's photo is posted on my ancestrytreeDanaHarperDaveyFamilyTree.
Sorry if you got bombarded with messages I rewrote, because one seemed not to have posted. Henry Torgenson was living with my ggranduncle James Wesley Harper, wife Dora and family. My grandfather's favorite cousin was named Carrie Voight Harper. Her picture is posted too.
Dana

I got this msg which has a good web site which contains lots of information about the Moses Family, South Carolina. This was sent to me by jwconnolly187
==================
jwconnolly187
Dec 18, 2012
I was just looking up an E. J. Moses on the internet. My mom is reading a book that mentions an E. J. Moses who was in the S.C. Senate in 1851. So then I stumbled upon F. J. Moses who served during that time. (Can't find E. J.)
http://www.isjl.org/history/archive/sc/sumter.html
I'm thinking this is who the book must have been referring to.
Then I open up Ancestry.com and here is your mail, mentioning the same person! Anyway, thanks for the information!

A. Connolly
==========================
My msg about F. J. I'm not sure if she is related but Samuel Kelly, son of Andrew, is also in Monroe County, Alabama. Have you found any new information on the Kellys?

Thank you for your help.

I was doing research on my grandmother whose family was placed in the Charleston Orphan House in 1926. THe South Carolina Room at the Main Library in Charleston has a whole draw of Microfilm with the records of each child. Also there is a large gray book 362.732 Mcknight, that lists each child and has a code which says accepted, denied, indentured. From that info you then go to the microfilm.
I found all I was looking for.

I am researching my husbands Marshall & Miller side of the family from Charleston,S.Carolina. GG Grandfather James B. Marshall b.July 1826 in S.Carolina married Mary Jane Miller in Charleston,SC in April 1849. He was a free man of colour as was she & fled S.Carolina in 1857 with his wife & son Edward B. Marshall & settled in Toronto,Ontario,Canada working as a coloured barber. Also in 1857 James B. & wife Mary Jane were bequeathed a property in Charleston located at 97 Wentworth St. by a woman named Charlotte Miller.I am not sure what the connection is between this Charlotte Miller & Mary Jane Miller Marshall & am looking to follow up both the Marshall & Miller family lines & connect up with anyone having info, documents or photos pertaining to this family. I have no information on either the Marshall or Miller families of James B. MARSHALL other than his birthdate of July 4,1826 in S.Carolina & Mary Jane MILLER, b. March 21, 1828. Would very much like to hear from you if you are interested & i am more than happy to share what i have on the family. Regards, Susan
I am looking at a pretty detailed family tree of my husband Carson John Bulwinkle in Charlston, SC as I'm trying to piece together the ancestry. It begins with Carsten Sahlmann and Rebecca Wehman who's daughter Rebecca H. married John Albert Bulwinkle (where our line descends from). REbecca H.'s siblings were Rosina, Luder, Trina, John, Frederick, Catherine, Margaret, Carsten, Herman, John C, and Julia Ann. I have the next line down on each of those as well. I saw a lot of those names in the threads mentioned above, so feel free to contact me if interested.

I found a Lucrethia Falker in an 1880 census living with a Rhina Kinloch. The birth year is off by only one year.

It happened-maybe not planned or above board!

actually I was thinking that perhaps Ben Falker's parents or grandparents worked for a Falker family as slaves, and they took their family name. I mentioned it because the Falker name seems to be more common in that area than Forker.
The other lead I looked into was Fanny "Gettis" who was listed as Ben's sister in law in 1880. From other records, it appears maybe the name was Gathers. Fanny did have a sister Caty of the right age to be Lucretha's Mom, but there was no likely child living with her in 1870.
Maybe C). But on two death certificates both parents' names are written as Ben Forker and Katie Forker, so maybe more of d)?

I see the Falker and Forker connection; however, I am not following your thinking with b). Are you suggesting that a well-known white lady had a child for a black man who was in her family's service?

I sure do appreciate all that you are doing. Let me know if there is anything on my side that I can help with. (I do not live in SC; I live in TX).

I looked in some Charleston newspapers online, and noticed Falker was a name associated with some well know people.
(I am assuming white, because they mentioned having servants)
Our families certainly don't make it easy for us, do they? I am wondering if a)Ben in 1870 and 1880 are the same person, and the age was really off in 1870 b)Martha Falker Washington was raised by her grandparents, and their ages in 1870 were right c)Could Lucretha be a child of Ben and a white woman, not married to him? or d) a completely different answer!

Thanks for the help. I have saved this census with Ben and Tesby because I am thinking there is a connection. Ben Faulker was born around the right time to be her father.

What happened to the mother and Lucretha? Also, Let's say that Ben (1845) is her father, could it be that Lucretha and her mother are living somewhere else because of the parents' racial difference? However, it is usually the other way around the mulatto child is usually with the black parent. (not sure if "mulatto" in Lucretha case means blk/white. I am thinking it could mean Native American, too. I've searched the "Indian" census, but there are no Forkers. Another Forker I found is a Joseph Forker (B. 1840).

Okay, my assumption of Tesby was wrong - I found a death for Martha Washington, daughter of Benjamin Faulker and Tisby Gathers, which appears to be the Martha born in 1869, although her birth date was given as 1881
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG1K-ZPK

I know you believe this is not your Ben Forker, but they may be related in some way.
