question about land records

Hello - I'm trying to research an ancestor who lived in Colleton in the late 1700s/early 1800s. The father is Thomas Lewis, the son Caleb Lewis. They were Quakers, slave-owners. Thomas died before 1792, and Caleb had moved to Newberry District by 1802. Other children of Thomas were Thomas, William, Esther, Elizabeth and Mary.

I'd like to find land records that show where they lived, etc. Any suggestions of where to look for these type of records?

Dear Dr. Dreyfuss,

I recently started working on a biography of Colonel Colcock and am excited to learn of the work on the regiment. It certainly is a fascinating piece of overlooked SC history. I've love to correspond further if your available to.
As far as I know the Crosby's are not in my direct line, but the McKinney's who married a Sineath, and whose sibling married a Crosby, are... :-]

Peter McKinney(b1804) m. "Unknown Daughter" Sineath (you can imagine how I bristle at writing that...) whose sister Priscilla married Peter's brother Isham. Their sister Mary Ann Sineath(b1808) married Paul Crosby(b1804). Paul, Mary Ann and their family are host to Peter and his family (sons John S. and James and daughter Martha) in 1850 in Berrien County Georgia. Also living with them is an Elizabeth Burnett, age 65. My gut tells me she is Peter's mother, Burnett being a second marriage name, but guts aren't proof. :-] Also, I suspect she might even be born a Crosby, but suspicions are just as reliable as guts...

I cannot find the parents of Peter and Isham McKinney, and you can imagine how I wasnt to know the name of Peter's wife... "Unknown" is not a name... She is known to her siblings, and I'm hoping for a letter or family Bible to turn up somewhere that has her name...

All that to say this, if there is any information on the Crosby Family website that might help me in any way, I'd love to be invited as well: lloyd.fam(at)juno.com

Thanks!
I am looking for information on George Cling Wasson and George Jack Wasson who lived in Walterboro, South Carolina. George Cling was the son of Hugh Wasson, my family's first ancestor to come to America in 1772. Hugh received a land grant in St. Bartholomew's Parish, (Walterboro) Colleton County in 1772 and my family has always lived there. I have seen some family trees on ancestry list George Cling's wife as Elizabeth Cryder/Crider (born 1796 in Pittsylvania, Virginia and died 1834 in Livingston, Kentucky). I am wondering where this information came from. I have not been able to find it anywhere else and to my knowledge, my whole line of Wassons have always been in Walterboro, SC. I would love to hear from anyone who has any information about this or who have common relatives.

My mom talked so fondly about your mother, Mickey, all the time. I remember seeing Mickey at my grandmother's funeral in the 1970s. My mom died in December 2008. I have just started looking around trying to put together her family history and see who is still alive. I'm afraid my family lost touch after my grandparents and aunts and uncle died.

The site is searchable; I've found so much family tree information here.

Hope this helps!
Susan

Cemeteries of Upper Colleton County, page 171-193, by Evelyn Bryan, 2nd printing 1974.

A lot of names listed.

Maybe some online transcriptions available, too.
Funny thing about new online transcriptions is that they are often new surveys and a lot of tombstones are missing.
If you are not close to a library with a copy, let me know specific (sur)names and I can look for a few. I don't have the kind of time required to transcribe the whole 22 pages, however.
Suggestion - You will get more help/responses on Rootsweb if you fill in the SURNAMES box when you pose a query because other related people will see it.

Happy hunting.

The message board still shows the contact info as psabin@bellsouth.net. That is no longer a viable address, and I'm told that there is no way to update the image file that shows my old address.
Good morning Jean,
I just reviewed your message and am sorry to say that my line of Jacob Carter (ca, 1720, South Carolina) in not linked to the Carters of New Jersey (confirmed by DNA results).
Do any of these given Carters originate from New Jersey? I am seeking info on Jacob Carter born 1769 in New Jersey. Married Rebecca Richardson in Nelson County, Ky in 1798. Other trees have him also married to a Tryphena Dayton. I am sorry, but I am now totally confused. Would you be able to enlighten me on this group of Carters, please?

Regards,
Jean West Parrott

Hi Teri.
I don't know if you are still looking for information re this, but Clara Crosby Quesinberry is my grandmother. She was married to Issac "Ike" Henry Quesinberry, living in Colleton Cty, SC. I have seen some records indicating that her middle name is Jane, but cannot prove that.
They had 5 children, with three living into adulthood. My Aunt Anne, Uncle Robert "Buddy", and my Dad, Jack Oliver. They had a baby die...believe only several weeks old, and a 3 year old, Josiah, who died in an accident.
Hope this helps. I used to read your genealogy pages years ago, and that is what got me started. Thanks, I think. lol

Great question! Here is how I've been saving the online obits to my tree.

Press FN + PRTSC to copy a screen shot of the newspaper. Open up Microsoft Paint and paste. In Paint, click on Select to select the obit and click Crop. Save it as a JPEG file and you can upload it to your tree.

Or, I can email it to you as an attachment if that is easier, it's really no trouble.
