Surnames: PRUITT, THURSTON, HARGROVE, MAYBIN, BLACKWELL, SMITH
Just learned of a cousin, Isaac PRUITT who worked in the 1930's as "local experienced man" building the State Park in Greenville County, SC. He was making shingles to cover the park's buildings. He was old then and had blue eyes and grey hair. We had Pruitt cousins who lived at Terry Creek section.
My ancestors: John Bartlett THURSTON (1830-1906) married (first) Wyzette/Yzetta/Zetta PRUITT. She is said to have been from Pruitt Mt. Her sisters, Sarah and June (who married Mitch BRYANT & had twin sons, Mark & Mitch) were living w/ them in 1860 Greenville Dist. Merritta Div. SC. Wyzette had died by 1880 and John Bart was living with one of his sons, my ancestors, James Marion THURSTON and Zillia MAYBIN.
*1880 Soundex Grnvl Co Saluda Twp: James Thurston, 21, b SC; Zillie 21, b NC; William 1, b NC; Barton 52 b SC. By 1900, John Bart THURSTON (CSA-16th Reg.) had married Emma DEMPSEY and moved to Pickens Co., SC. Don't have parents or dates or cemetery for Wyzette, think she may have died in late 1860's. John Bart is buried at Reedy River Baptist Church, Greenville, SC (near Travlers Rest, I think) I heard a few weeks ago that a cousin who is in 16th Reg. reenactors, had a Confederate marker put at his grave but haven't been able to find out for sure.
A cousin/researcher said James Marion was raised by HIGHTOWERS.
An 84 year old cousin says -- the younger children were, I guess you call it, farmed out. Grandpa (James Marion THURSTON) was raised by Thurs Lee, her husband may have already died, not sure. They lived at Terry Creek, SC (near township, 6 by 6 miles) She had a daug., Hattie Lee. I don't think Hattie Lee ever married & she lived at Beaver Dam. (he doesn't know if Lee is surname) His brother Tom Thurston was raised by Goodmans who lived near N. Saluda River, SC. When Mama was real young, 1880's or 90's, James Marion (her dad) was running a government still for the Goodmans. This was before they moved to Pelzer, SC.
Also, a descendant: Ruby Thurston b.abt 1900 was the dau. of John J.Thurston and Lake Nichols. Ruby married W.C Pruitt. Their children: Carl m. Nancy Pruitt, Sarah m.Bill ?_, her twin Vera (died at birth),Betty m. ?__ Autry, Vernon m. Pearl Pruitt, Doris m. Francis Gregory, Phillis, Janice, Judy m. Mike Waters, Phillip (stillborn).
Also have a Ruth WARD, dau of James A. WARD and Josie WARD (1882-1934) who married a Bull PRUITT.
Any help appreciated!
