You might try the census records between 1900 and 1930 for Laurens County (Waterloo) or Greenwood County. Given his approximate date of birth, you may find that he registered in the WWI registration. That doesn't mean he served in WWI--just that he registered. Most public libraries have access to Heritage Quest or Ancestry. Both sites have census records and Ancestry has the WWI registrations.
