Thomas Harris of Kershaw Dist--ca. 1810

I am looking for any information on a Thomas Harris, found on page 175 of the 1810 Kershaw Dist. census.

Based on the census data, Thos. Harris was born between 1766 and 1784. He had 2 boys under 10, and 2 girls under 10 years of age. His wife is the same age group as Thomas.

Harris is living close to an Oliver Massey and I am trying to establish a tie between the two families. Massey moved to Perry Co., Alabama in around 1820. Thomas Harris is not in any 1820 census that I can find in Kershaw, SC or in Perry, Alabama, but I suspect he or his family also moved to Perry Co., Alabama.

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is general area from Cassett to Tillersville, Kershaw Co, SC. I have 1797 estate papers refering to request for adm of estate being read during or after "divine service." But have no idea what church it could be. Land records consistently place my Davises in this area. Any leads on churches, or publications of church records for Kershaw Co, SC appreciated.

Hello, I'm not sure if I can be of any help but I believe that Darling A. Baker and Mary Copeland were the parents of one Joe Baker. I also believe Joe had a brother called Dock Baker. Joe married a Minnie Morgan in Jan. 24, 1911. This part I am sure of:).......... Joe Baker and Minnie Morgan/Baker had a daughter Called Gatsie Jane Baker who married a John Craft. John and Gatsie Craft were the grandparents of my husband.
I know that one J.Van Baker married a Susan Boone. They were killed in a train wreak n Camden Aug. 3, 1935. Also killed with them were Samuel Baker, Steve and Annie Boone Baker, John Van Jr. If these are the same Baker's maybe I can be of some help? Thanks, Sarah

Researching the Davis family that begins with Edward (got land on Little Lynches 1765, will proven 1786 Kershaw Co, SC) In his will his wife was named Nelly. His children were Henson, Rosier, Mason, Esther, Rachel. My line is from Rosier, but am working on them all. I beleive many DAVISes were still in Kershaw Co, SC that will tie into mine. The known sons of my ROSIER left kershaw Co, SC in 1812. Land records are putting my DAVISes on Big Pine Tree Creek, Little Lynches, Bell Branch. I am interested in the Edward who livedon Spears Creek also. The above info is all BEFORE 1810.

Paula in MS

Hello, and thank you for responding. I have not located the burial place of my Moseley (Mosley,Mosely) ancestor. I will pursue your clue. I hope that there is a transcription for that church cemetery. I have not seen anyone named McManus in Kershaw research that I recall. My ancestor was born and raised in Kershaw, but went to Union County, NC later. You might try looking there and in Lancaster County, SC, where others from Kershaw seem to have moved back and forth. Thanks again. Donna

I know it's been awhile since your post and I am hoping you are still around. The following is a post I did the other day, then went off looking if anyone else might be on the same path I am. Here is the following and please tell me what you think.....

I have found many variants of what my husbands name is now "Modisette", so it's hard to type in all of them.

This is about Isabel and Charles Modisett/e, the name most of us are familiar with.

Lets break this down:
Lets remember we do not know if Isabel even knew how to spell her husbands name, or if she was literate. My thinking is she said her name and the census taker wrote it as he heard it.

Isabel Gardner MODDISET shows in the 1830 census in Monroe County Georgia.
Isabel Gardner MODESET(T) shows in the 1820 census
We know that Isabel had a child as early as 1796 in South Carolina
We know Isabel had a child as late as 1812 in South Carolina

1776 Isabel’s birth
1780
1790
1796 Birth of first child, South Carolina
1800 husband alive
1810 husband alive
1812 Birth of last child, South Carolina / husband had to be alive for this conception
1820 Georgia
1830 Georgia

Lets say Isabel’s husband was Charles. This means we are looking for a “head of household” by the first name “Charles” in “South Carolina” by the surname of “any form” of “MODDISET or MODESET(T)” in 1800 and 1810.

There aren’t any!
Lets work backwards:

1810 There is a Charles MOTHERSHED in Kershaw South Carolina. Please note families SIMS and CASWELLS above and below this name.

1800 There is a Charles MOTTERSETT in Kershaw South Carolina. Please note William Gardner below.

1790 There is a Christopher MOTHERSHED and a William MOTHERSHED in Camden, South Carolina. Camden and Kershaw are the same place. Camden is the county seat of Kershaw. Highly possible Charles was in one of these homes and within 6 years he married Isabel and had his first child.

When the English pronounce “Mother” they don’t say it with a “th” sound. They pronounce it with a “dd” or “tt” sound. The end “Shed” would also be pronounced with an “et” sound. Thus would explain the 1800 census of the same man from 1810.
I think we need to press beyond finding “Charles” himself and find out who are Christopher and William MOTHERSHED. Who were their children, etc?

I am interested in obtaining copies of any documentation you may have on Philip Terrell Burford (and his family) who was born on 29 Jun 1763 in North Carolina. I have found several conflicting dates and locations (traditions) surrounding the death for Philip T. Burford.

If there are multiple "Philip T's" out there, I am interested in the man who was the son of Philip Burford, and father of Philip Hastings Burford. According to Philip T. Burford's Revolutionary War pension file, he stated that he was born on 29 Jun 1763.

His file also documents his "federal" (non-militia) service in the Revolutionary War. From 1 Mar 1780, Philip served under Col. Nicholas Long, quartermaster general of State of North Carolina, as purchasing commissary and later wagonmaster.
John Chestnut m Sarah Cantey, dec 1815-1818, not 1813

I have discovered a date error regarding the above John Chestnut.
Some Ancestry Family trees indicate that John Chestnut of Kershaw or Chester Co died on April 1, 1813. This date of death appears to be a misread and should be between the years of 1815 and 1818 [perhaps Apr 1, 1818]. His Will is recorded in Kershaw County Wills Book No A1 pp 477-490, and was written on June 27, 1815 [quote], "...In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Camden this 27th day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen and in the thirty ninth year of the American independence...John Chestnut L.S." Witnesses are John Cantey, James W. Cantey, and Andrew Hood.

On April 20, 1818, the following 4 men signed and swore to the correctness of the Will as filed in open court: James Chestnut, Duncan McRae, James S. Deas, and John Taylor. These men are his son and sons-in-law and are all named as Executors along with grandson John Chestnut. The grandson John Chestnut is able to serve as executor once he reaches the age of 21.

The Will and Inventory are 14 pages in the Will book.

This is not my direct line, but I assume the poster would want to correct the error in the death year since it can't possibly be 1813, as is currently posted.

From what I've gathered through census records and trees found on Ancestry.com, Carrie V. Outlaw's father, Burrell Outlaw, was the son of Benjamin Outlaw and Mary Ann Walter. Benjamin was the son of George Outlaw and Martha ?.

Hebron Ellerbe Outlaw was the son of Bentley A. Outlaw and Julia Brown. He was the grandson of Roderick O. Outlaw and Mahala ?. He was the gr-grandson of John Outlaw and Abigail ?. He was the gr-gr-grandson of Bentley Outlaw and Martha ?. He was the 3rd gr-grandson of George Outlaw and Martha ?. Therefore, Carrie V. Outlaw Hawkins and Hebron Ellerbe Outlaw were 4th cousins.

It just still baffles me that I can't find this Hawkins family, nor any member of the Outlaw family, in the 1920 census. I found the Hawkins in the 1930 Chester Co., SC census. Hebron and Inez were living with them. That census states that Hebron was 30 and had been married since he was 20. It also states that Inez was 26 and first married at age 14. According to his information they would have been married in 1920. According to her information, they would have been married in 1918.

Do you have any idea when and where they were married? That might help me find them in the 1920 census.

THANKS!

I'm doing some research for a friend of mine and came across these people.

In the 1930 SC census, John Hawkins and wife Carrie V. Hawkins were living in Rossville, Chester Co., SC. As far as I can tell, they had only one child, Inez M. Hawkins. I can't find them in the 1920 census, but there is no other child listed with them in the 1930 census. I found them in the 1910 census, with Inez being their only child, so I came to the conclusion that she was their only child.

In that 1930 census that I found, Inez was listed as Inez M. Outlaw. Her husband was Hebron Ellerbe Outlaw. They had a daughter named Julia V. Outlaw, who was my friend's grandmother.

If you have any information on Hebron E. Outlaw, or where the Hawkins family might have been living in 1920, please let me know.
Hello,
Yes, these people are related to me. Inez Hawkins would be my 2nd cousin twice removed.
I do believe that Inez Hawkins was an only child, she may have had siblings that died very young though?
Inez's Father was John Hawkins (5/1/1870-7/28/1946), he was born in Darlington County, this is where my Hawkins family is from and I have that line pretty far back, he died and is buried in Kershaw County.
John Hawkins married Carrie V. Outlaw (1881-10/16/1949) in about 1899. Carrie V. Outlaw is a daughter of Burrell Outlaw & Mary Jane Brannon, these Outlaw's & Brannon's were from Kershaw County, John Hawkins & Carrie are buried in the Brannon Cemetery in Kershaw County.
Hebron E. Outlaw (8/9/1897-12/13/1962), also born in Kershaw County was a son of Bentley Outlaw & Julia C. Brown, I believe that Hebron Outlaw & his Mother-In-Law Carrie V. Outlaw are related in some way, but not sure as yet! Hope this helps! I have more on these families if interested?

Jeff Hawkins

Martha,
I have an ancestor buried there. His name is John Hawkins, born around 1870 and his wife Carrie Outlaw born around 1882. I think Carrie is related to a Hebron E. Outlaw. John Hawkins was from Darlington County.

Thank you,
Jeff Hawkins

Darlilng A. Baker and other Bakers of 1800's Kershaw and Lancaster

I am searching for children and grandchildren and other information about the family of Rachel Baker, listed in Chesterfield, the mining district, in 1850 and in Lancaster in 1860. Her granddaughter, Molcy (Mary, Molly) was listed in Keshaw in 1870-1900. I SUSPECT that Darling(married mary copeland and listed in Chesterfield county in both 1850 and 1860)is Molcy's brother. I'm pretty sure Jane and Louis Baker are Molcy's sister and brother. Since I am at a dead end on Molcy, I'm hoping to find a connection in another part of the family. I don't know if Rachel married a Baker or if her maiden name was Baker but I know she is Molcy's grandmother. I also suspect Alex and Henry Baker of Lancaster census 1860 are in the family but I don't know how they are connected. Please help! This is driving me crazy.

Actually her name is Molcy (spelled various ways) and she is my husband's ancestor. I've been stumped about this line for a long time. If anyone wants to share, there is a picture of Molcy but I don't have a copy. I am working on getting a neice to send a copy to me and when I get it I'll be glad to share it with anyone.

Margaret Shiver, daughter married Sterling (Starling) Thompson on 20 Apr 1841.. They had a number of children while in South Carolina. She died between the 1850 census and 1854 when he appears in Augusta, Georgia with the children. Have you ever seen a date of death or a place of burial for Margaret Rebecca Shiver Thompson?
