Lexington County land records, Gauntt, Williams and Knotts families

I have a court record from Lexington County where Nancy Williams (wife of William Williams) and Sarah Gauntt (wife of Israel Gauntt, Sr.) relinquish their interest in a piece of land (listed as recorded at pages 316 and 317). I am assuming by this that Nancy and Sarah are sisters and they inherited this land. Can anyone advise or help me in trying to figure out who they got this land from (their father??). I am descended from Sarah Gauntt through her son, Clement Jackson who presumably was from an earlier marriage. Thank you.
Hi, I am researching Henry Grubbs as a possible father of Mary Ann Grubbs Jeffcoat, mistress of the Samuel Jeffcoat House and Plantation until 1880, wife of Wesley Jeffcoat. She is living in the 1840 census as an 8 year old girl with the Willams family.

They are my great-grandparents. Their son Thomas Vernon Flake was my grandfather. Thanks for any information that you can provide.

Hello:

Just wondering if anyone has researched any of the Grubbs family in Lexington, SC? I'm particularly interested in Phillip Grubbs who appears in the 1790FC in Edgefield, 1810, 1820, and 1830 FCs in Lexington. I'm further interested in Henry Grubbs, a possible son or nephew who also appears in the 1820, 1830 census in Lexington.

It's interesting that I can't find any references to them in these boards or elsewhere when he apparently lived in the same area for decades!?

Also, what is the state of probate and other records of this county? Does much exist? Is any online? Published? I've been concentrating in AL research and haven't done much in SC yet.

Thanks for any information at all!

Derric
If you find an obit you're interested in used the "Request Obit" selection at the top of the link page.

Richard
Ha, so I was on the right track! Woo hoo!!

The biggest thing that confused me with Jacob being married to Mahala Redmond is that she was on the 1850 census as Redmond (with Josephine Redmond) and the 1860 census as Pound (with Josephine Pound). He was on the 1850 census with rest of the children and 1860 census with just Rebecca.

I assume they separated (or divorced) but why did the rest of the children get split up?

I'll drop you an email on the Hallman stuff. Thanks!

Lexington Co family researcher Beiman Otis Prince reported some family groups for the Orangeburg Pounds who moved to Lexington Co. (Like all traditional sources, these data require checking/verification.)

I. Peter Pfund, 1 October 1763 - 16 Jan 1828 Lexington SC, son of Jacob Pfund and Mary Felder, married 18 Jul 1786 Ann Knight, 1757 - 30 May 1852. Their children were (1) JACOB PETER POUND born 1 Jul 1784; (2) Mary Pound born 25 Sep 1786; (3) Ann Pound, 11 Sep 1788 - 21 Oct 1796; (4) Barbara Pound, 24 Apr 1791 - 7 Jan 1881, married Sabastian Bass; (5) Daniel J. Pound born 20 Feb 1793; (6) Rachel Pound born Nov 1795.

II. JACOB PETER POUND, born 1 Jul 1784, son of Peter Pound and Ann Knight, married Margaret___, 1787 - 22 Oct 1867. Their children were (1) JACOB H. POUND, 1814 - 18 Dec 1868, married (a) JoAnna Crider and (b) Mahalia Redmond; (2) Peter Pound, born 1825, never married; (3) Mary Ann Pound, 1813 - 12 May 1889, married Jacob Peter Pearson, died 25 May 1897; (4) Daniel J. Pound, born 15 Jul 1819, married Christianna Richter.

III. JACOB H. POUND, 1814 - 18 Dec 1868, son of Jacob Peter Pound and Margaret___, married Mahala Redmond, daughter of Peter Redmond, with issue: (1) Barbara Susannah Pound, born 18 Aug 1839; (2) Mary Margaret E. Pound, 4 Nov 1840 - 15 Aug 1850; (3) Rachel Rebecca Pound, born 16 Oct 1842, married John Baughman; (4) Sarah Louisa Pound, born 26 Dec 1843; (5) Lucinda Louvennia Pound, born 10 Jul 1845, married John Richter with no issue; (6) Saphire Addison Pound, born 2 Sep 1846, buried Harmony Baptist Church, married Reubin Sharpe; (7) Mildred C. Pound, born 7 Jan 1848; (8) PETER HILLIARD CHRISTIAN POUND, 11 Jul 1850, married (1) 27 Nov 1873 Lucy Ann Younginer, born 19 May 1853 and (2) 28 Aug 1889 Hattie Odelle Hallman, born 21 Jan 1869.

Contact me @gmail.com, and I'll send you some material re the early Holman/Hallman family of Lexington--they're even more complicated than the Pounds...

Harriet Imrey

Seeking Peter Pound Parentage

I am having a problem finding out who my great grandfather's parents were. His name was Peter Hilliard Christian Pound and he was born in Lexington County, South Carolina. His death certificate lists his date of birth as July 1850.

He is not on the 1850 census.

He is on the 1860 census living with the Goodwyn/Goodwin family. His birth year there is 1847.

He is not on the 1870 census. Neither are the Goodwin's.

He is on the 1880 census with wife number 1. His birth year there is 1851.

He is on the 1900 census with wife number 2. His birth year there is 1849.

Here is what I have cobbled together as a theory:

Looking back to the 1800 census, there is only one Pound in the Lexington County area:

Peter Pound I (okay, this is a good clue, I think!)

1810: again, just Peter Pound I.

1820: No Peter Pound I. Just a Margaret Pound. No other Pound's. I speculate that this was his wife.

1830: No Peter Pound. No Margaret Pound. Just a Barbara Pound. Hmm. Is that Margaret going by a middle name? Is that a daughter who became the head of house after Margaret died?

1840: Jacob Pound, Barbara Pound. Theory: Jacob is Peter and Margaret's son.

1850: Daniel Pound, 1821 with wife and children (son of Peter and Margaret); Barbara Pound b 1788 (err...Sister of Peter I?) ; Ann Pound b 1757 (mother of Peter I?); Jacob Pound b 1814 with NO wife but five children (son of Peter I and Margaret)

1860 Margaret Pound b 1787 with the Pearson family and a Peter Pound II b 1825 (Peter I and Margaret's son), Barbara Pound head, b 1789 (daughter of Ann Pound and ?, sister of Peter I?), Jacob Pound b 1816 with one of his children in another home, two of them in different homes, and two missing, Peter Pound (MINE!) with the Goodwyn family, Mahaley Pound b 1810 with a Josephine Pound born 1845, Mahala Pound b 1817 with the Redman family (totally not sure where they fit in!!)

So, finally: My theory is that Peter Pound (1850) is the son of Jacob Pound and unknown wife. Wife died shortly after Peter was born around 1849-1850. Peter was sent to live with someone who could take care of him before his father was enumerated but possibly AFTER the new family was enumerated. The rest of the children were sent to live with whoever would take them, leaving the father with just one child in 1860.

This would make Peter Pound 1850 the son of Jacob Pound 1817 who was the son of Peter Pound 1780's.

Does anyone have any other ideas or information that might help?

Thanks,

Kristen

Is something missing on the 1870 census for Lexington County

Hello,

My grandmother and her parents and grandparents (at least) resided in various parts of Lexington County, SC.

I have found all (most?) of them on both the 1860 and 1880 census; I have found none of them on an 1870 census, anywhere.

Here's what I have; I am including a couple of people who were born around 1869 - they may be missing due to inaccurate birthdate:

Hattie O'dell Hallman (Pound) b 1869, Gilbert Hollow on 1880 census, no 1870 census 2nd wife of Peter Hilliard Christian Pound.

Peter Hilliard Christian Pound b 1851, Orangeburg on 1860 census, Boiling Springs on 1880 census, no 1870 census.

Lucy Ann Younginer Pound b 1850, Clarks Mills on 1860 census, Boiling Springs on the 1880 census. 1st wife of Peter Hilliard Christian Pound.

Thomas Wesley Hallman b 1835, Lightwood Creek on 1860 census, Gilbert Hollow on 1880. No 1870. Father of Hattie Hallman.

Zilpha B Hallman, b 1805, died 1871 according to headstone. Only census I could find her on at all was 1860, Lightwood Creek. Mother of Thomas Wesley Hallman.

EDIT: Okay, weird! Seconds after I posted this a hint popped up for Zilpha B Hallman; I couldn't find an 1850 census for them, but it's there now! Still no 1870, though.

Barbara Catherine Clark Hallman b 1841, Clarks Mills on 1860 census, Gilbert Hollow on 1880. No 1870 census. Mother of Hattie Hallman.

Andrew J Clark b 1818, Clarks Mills on 1860, Chinquapin on 1880. No 1870 Likewise for his wife and children, his father, and his wife's parents.

Is there some commonality between these places the would indicate a lost page or a missed area for the 1870 census? I think that this is too many people to be missing for it to be transcription or spelling errors.

Can anyone help? I need the 1870 information to find a missing link and it's driving me nuts!

Thanks,

Kristen

I go back past James Williams. It is possible that Elisha is descended from Roger Williams who was governor and founder of Rhode Island. I have the connection but as you know there are many errors online. Keyword search for "Some SC Cousins". If you have trouble email me at: jjhowell41@aol.com I have Elisha's picture on my site.

We are researching my husband's family tree. We can trace his lineage back to Elisha "Malachi" Williams, born Apr 18, 1822, died Jan 24 1897, in Swansea.

It appears that Elisha's father is James "Big Jim" Williams, but then going any further back doesn't seem to be solidly verifiable.

We would appreciate any help, documentation, that can help us in this effort.

I am kin to the Sharpe's and Moorer's that you are asking about. While the census does list mulatto, my great grandmother who was Ethel Moorer was Native American. Her father was David A. Moorer and his mother was Anna C. Moorer. The 1850 Census shows that Wilson Moorer was Anna's first husband. She later married a Sharp and had quite a few children. I will be happy to share what little that has confused me about these families. To make matters even more complicated, my grandfather was Lucius Sharpe. This is part of the Gaston/Swansea line that someone referred to earlier.

Thanks,
Teresa

I saw your post and can tell you that James Henry was my grandfather, and that Mack was his father. He died in Ladson (Charleston) SC. Is there any particular reason you are searching for the Harris'?

Scott

Lt. Daniel Jones - Co. K, 9th SC Inf. ??

Seeking info on Daniel Edmund Jones, CSA, who is described below from Dean Fowler's article "MACON COUNTY LIFE" (Macon County GA). I understand that Daniel Edmund Jones is originally from SC, and I see there was a Lt. Daniel Jones in Company K, 9th SC Infantry, mostly from Lexington County SC, the company known as the "Pickens Sentinels." Though Daniel Edmund Jones would be rather old for military service (he wasn't too old to be fathering children in 1863), I thought he might have served in a SC unit, rather than GA (Macon County). Does anyone have information about Lt. Daniel Jones to connect or rule him out as Daniel Edmund Jones?

Ezekial's parents were Daniel Edmund Jones, CSA, and Eugenia King of Danielsville, Rhode Island. Eugenia King is described as a "red-headed school teacher from Danielsville, Rhode Island." According to an article in Macon County Life by Dean Fowler, Daniel and Eugenia had seven children and the three youngest were named in the article above, Ezekial, Beura and Leonard. Any info on these people is desired.

Seeking info on the ancestors, siblings , spouse and inlaws of Ezekial Jones of Macon Co. He married 1st-Frances ?, 2nd Martha Jane Boddie Hobbs (widow of Joseph Hobbs and daughter of Allen Boddie), 3rd Cassa Barnes. Ezekial is father of John J. Jones, Minister of the Gospel, b.12-Sep-1863 d. 17-Feb-1930 (buried Little Bethel, Ideal, GA), by his 2nd wife Martha Jane Boddie.

Did you ever find any information here? From the info on ancestry.com, it appears that the James Madison Williams listed here was a "senior". He had a son, a "junior", who was my great grand dad.

I believe that I posted the information about Mary Polly Stone. Milledge Fallaw had a sister named Emmaline. She was the youngest child of Lewis and Polly Fallaw. She was married to George Boatwright. She died in February 1919. In her death certificate (Lexington County), her parents are listed as Lewis Fallaw and Mary Stone. The undertaker was her grandson, Wade Hampton Fallaw. This is the only/best source of information that I could find about Mary Polly Fallaw.

Hope this helps.

Chuck Fallaw

Daniel Sr, Williams brother, married Minnie! To my knowledge, Lucy's children had different fathers. Some born in slavery-some not. I don't think Dykes and Lucy were married-I don't know anything about Dykes. My fam says that
Dykes last name is Jerry-he used Rowe for some reason.
