There is a HUGE error going around for WILLIAM ADAMS,(ca. 1730-1780) son of Richard ADAMS and Amy/Anny SHOCKLEY. Many started out by calling the husband of Obedience LeGett/Legett, "Jonathan." [Due no doubt to the error in Thomas' History of Marlboro Co., SC.] Now, to cover up the error, he is called William Jonathan (or vice versa.) Obedience is now Mary Obedience (or vice versa.) We now have several who entered the DAR thru the incorrect ancestor, and this error is under review by National DAR. William ADAMS died abt. 1780. Proof of his being the son of Richard ADAMS is found in Anson Co., NC Deed Bk. 5, page 10. 30 Dec. 1776 Richard ADAMS of Guilford Co., NC, planter, to William ADAMS, son of the said RICHARD ADAMS, Anson Co. and in the province aforesaid, planter, of the other part......NE side of Pee Dee; So. side of the Fork of Mtn. Creek part of 200 a. tract granted Richard ADAMS by his mjesty's letter patent, 28 Apr. 1763." After the death of William ADAMS, his wife Obedience (aka Beedie) married Luke Robertson/Robinson/Robeson. William ADAMS' estate record for Richmond Co., NC is located at NC State Archives, Call No. CR 82.508.1. It lists items sold on 15 Sept. 1782. The children listed for William ADAMS Sr. are: (1)William ADAMS (Jr.) (who married 4 times- 1st: Mary MARINE, 2nd: Julia BULLARD, 3rd:Elizabeth GIBSON, 4th: Martha (Patsy) EASTERLING. This William ADAMS can also be found on the 1860 census. (2) John ADAMS who m. Celia COOK, (3) Shockley ADAMS who m. Isabelle McCRAE/McRAE; (4) Divinity ADAMS who m. James GIBSON. Luke ROBERTSON/ROBINSON/ROBESON was also previously married to "Christiana." The children by Luke's first marriage are: Jepha ROBESON (minor child), Samuel and James ROBESON, Obedience GIBSON, Sally USERY and MARY USERY. Richard ADAMS father was Abraham ADAMS- See North Carolina Wills by Bryan GRIMES, pp 7/8. His wife was Barthia, but last name unknown. Abraham's will mentions the following children: Richard, Abraham Jr.,; William Adams; Obia or Abia and Willoughby Adams.
Never have I seen double names for William or Obedience in a legitimate source.
How nice it would be if those who have magnified this error, would make a correction! It is believed that Rev. J.A.W. Thomas incorrectly picked up on the name of the father of Mary MARINE ADAMS, who was Jonathan MARINE, when compiling the History for Marlboro Co., SC.
