Hi Elizabeth,

I'm trying to reach my 1st cousin James about seeing the old farm in June. My grown daughters & I are making a "Dad's tour of of North Carolina" (where I was born & lived for 28 years before moving to Northern California), as they've never been and want to experience it from my perspective before it's too late, so to speak. I'll ask James about the graveyard when I speak with him.

Cheers,

- Michael Coxe

Hello Michael,
Thanks so much for the information on Wolftrap Plantation. It is in a Marlboro County list of plantations, but there is no further information, so you have been a great help from your memories. The purpose of my query was to establish ownership of an abandoned graveyard on some land I recently inherited in the area that may have been part of the Wolftrap plantation. This land is located along Coxe Road. There are between 15-20 sunken graves and so far I have found two gravestones, both with the name of O'Neal. From the condition of the graves I think they may be as old as 150 years.
From your information, I may be able to trace the ownership of the land at the courthouse.
Thanks again,
Elizabeth Rockholt

Hi,

I saw your request for info about Wolftrap. It was (unsure about now) owned by my family. Here's what I know.

I was told that Wolftrap was originally 10,000 acres, a land grant to from the Lord's Proprieter of that region sometime in the 1600's. In my linage on my father's side there are the following surnames: Coxe (me/father/grandfather), McCormick (grandmother/great-grandfather) & Drake (great-grandmother). I always assumed Wolftrap was from the Drake linage, but never researched it.

I do remember the old plantation home, though it was unoccupied even when I was little kid 50 years ago. It was severely damaged by fire (early 70s?) - teenagers partying was the story. I haven't been there since my father passed away in 1968 & was buried in the Drake-Dudley cemetary in Blenheim.

My uncle Francis E. Coxe farmed it when I was a kid. His family lived instead in the Coxe home (his father's home), which was nearby. It could be these 2 farms (Coxe & Wolftrap) were combined. I never thought about it until just now. Francis's farm was 2500 acres, so I assumed that the original large grant had been divided among children over time. His son James (my 1st cousin) inherited it when Francis died in 1978. James leased it out, as he was a contractor in Myrtle Beach, and already earning more than he could make from farming.

That's about it. I was never much on family history, even tho the relatives always tried to drill it into me :)

- Michael Coxe
San Jose, CA
I am researching the Jefferson Hays and Drucilla Summerford families that have ties to the Marlboro County area.

They were married March 10, 1858 in Brownsville. Jefferson went on to serve in Company K, 8th SC Infantry

In 1850 census Jefferson was in Floyd Co, GA with his mother Barbara. I am not sure why they would be so far away, and no father is listed.

Drucilla was the daughter of Moses Summerford, who is listed in the 1830-1860 Marlboro county census.
Marlboro County Probate Office and Court House have good records and the people there are very helpful. There is also the Marlborough Historical Society and Historical Museum which may be of help. None of their information is on line that I know of. I would suggest you contact both about their hours of operation.
Much would depend on how long your ancestor was in the area and if he owned land there.
By all means visit the South Carolina State Archives in Columbia. They, too, are very helpful and have lots of information.

Hi, Hettie was my grandmother. There are no Native Americans in the Haire or Roscoe line that I know of except for those that born into the family by marriage to Native Americans; being my dad Roosevelt, who was an Lumbee Indian and uncle Buddy Roberts who is a Seminole Indian,I heard. If there was any Indian on either side and it is possible anybody that would know is dead. All the elder Haires living might be to embrassed to admitt it. When they were growing up being Indian or (colored) was a shameful thing. That explains why my birth certificate has white as my race when I am Native American because Roosevelt who I look alot like is Native American. Honestly I believe there is some color in the Haire/Roscoe line. I remember some of my older relatives have some mighty rough course thick hair. My Mom has pictures to prove. lol

I hope this helps. I am searching this out too. Trying to do both sides of my family plus my daughters side. Do you know the names of Hettie's parents and dates of death, birth or residence. I know she live over at Osborne NC before marriage to Grand Pa but I know nothing else about the Roscoes. If I wasn't kin to the Haires and so tight with a dollar and currently unemployed I would pay to search this out. lol Good Luck in your search.

Sincerely,
Sybil Oxendine
sybiloxendine@gmail.com

Parrish and they lived in Scotland County, NC. She died in 1947, buried at Spring Hill near Laurinburg, NC. Father was Owen Moore, mother named Sarah.

There are not many online records re the Hector Paterson (my great-great-grandfather) who lived in Marlboro in the 1840's. He was originally from Scotland. He lost his first wife (also from Scotland) in SC and remarried there before eventually moving to Florida. He had children by both wives there.

If I were to come to SC to research him, would it be better for me to come directly to Marlboro County or go to the SC State archives in Columbia? Are there many records kept at the local courthouse or elsewhere in Marboro County? Please advise me on the best way to proceed. Thank you.

After my first post I started searching for Alexander Pleasant Williams. He is on the 1900 and 1910 census for Adamsville, Marlboro, SC. Listed on 1900 Census as Alex P age 57 born Aug 1842, wife Fannie Williams, along with Cook Covington 26, step-son in household. Found death certificate for Cook, Thomas Cook Covington d. 8 Nov 1933 buried Hebron Cemetery. Mother was Mary F Speight, father William Covington. Maybe parents and Alex are in same cemetery.

Also found info that Alex's father was Matthew Williams, son of Thomas Williams.

Just trying to figure out this Williams family tree.

Nancy

William family notes have the information that Thomas lived in Montgomery, NC and his son Alex lived in Marlboro, SC. Thomas was born in Moore County, NC. A brother of Thomas, an Isaac also lived in Marlboro County.

Nancy

I would love any information you have to share. My aunt bonnie told me a story of her uncle Johnny (John C. Stacy) owning a barber shop in Bennettsville and as young girls, she and my mother(Betty) wrote a note asking for fifty cents and signed grandma's name to it. Grandma (Florence Stacy). She laughed as she recalled the whippin they got when grandma found out. Aunt Bonnie couldn't recall what she and my mom (Betty) spent the money on. Another story, is that Elnora Peele Stacy (James Stacy's 1st wife) actually ran off with another manm leaving him with the children. Do you have any information or stories about this?

I have actually found that my ancestors are Sweatt's but Eliza Jane Brigman Sweatt(my great-great grandmother) married James C. Stacy after her first husband Capers Sweatt (pasted away, I assume)

James C. Stacy was married to Elnora Peele, and to my knowledge they are the parents of five children, Maude, James Thomas, Dora, Cora Lee and Florence. I have some informatin on them if you would like send me an email. My great grandfather John Capers Sweatt Stacy was adopted by or took on the Stacy name (which I am trying to confirm) when Eliza married him between 1900-1910.
