Carl,
I have a quote from a book I just did today, make a copy of from the Newton County library Hx room:
The Summers family in Md. was an old established family in that colony. The progenitor of the Newton Co. Summers family was John Summers I, who, it is believed, was transported from England by Cpt. John Boddy in 1671. By 1695 John Summers had aquired much land. Joseph (I am assuming this is a grandson) m. Eleanor Clary in Md., and migrated to Newberry Co., SC c. 1770. It is said that he was a Universalist preacher. In his "Annals of Newberry", John Bellon L'Neall says: "Often I have seen the patriarch of that settlement, the good old man, Rev. Joseph Summers, with his white beard, extending to and resting on his breast. He was a native of Md. He introduced the wheat called "yellow lamas" by bringing as much as he could ina stocking leg when he came to SC." I have no record of Joseph's owning slaves, nor have I found records of his participation in the Rev. War. His father in law, Daniel Clary, was a Col. in the British Army. , etc. Joseph and Eleanor's ch were: William, John, Jesse, James, Eleanor, Cassandra, Mary, Ann, Darcus, Ruth and Samuel. James m. Elizabeth (Allan?)..their ch: Allen, Wm., John James, Ruth, Elizabeth, Mary, Eleanor and Rebecca. He d. 1826 in SC. Their son Allen m. Margaret Davis, dau of John Davis, Esq., one of the five men commissioned by John Clark, Gov. of Georgia, to organize and lay off the ocunty of Bibb and the town of Macon. (article in Macon Telegraph, July 7, 1824) ..There is no information as to where (which cemetary) he is buried, but I suspect it would be in the one to which you rec'd the other reply. Just thought these were interesting notes. I am 3rd great granddaughter to Allan and Margaret's dau. Martha Ann Rebecca Summers, m. to Charles Higgason Anderson (of the Anderson bunch from SC). Nice to know where some of the 'cousins' are!
