Melba, this is William Hiblburn Descendants, I found.

Descendants of William Hilburn
18th Century Resident of Frederick County, Virginia and
Newberry District, South Carolina
Data as of February 23, 2002

Several Hilburn family history enthusiasts - Michael Barr, Hilda Haney, Otta Sue Hill, Robert Edwards and the late Barbara Brittain Ryals - have put together the following genealogy of one of their ancestors, William Hilburn, Sr, who was born 1730-1740, possibly in Pennsylvania, and died in Newberry County, South Carolina sometime between 1800 and 1810.

The Hilburn family researchers ask users of this material to consider it "work in progress." Hence, if any republication is represented as "final results," readers will be angry and frustrated when they find that new information has invalidated what they thought was the "last word."

For this reason, users of the research presented here are asked not to republish the information in any of the "non-updatable" media, such as Broderbund's World Family Tree project, which doesn't permit revising previously distributed data. Also, users of the data are asked to respect the preliminary nature of the results by including the phrase "Preliminary Results" in any use of the genealogy.

Generation No. 1

1. William4 Hilburn was born Abt 1738 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania?, and died Bet. 1800 - 1810 in Newberry Co., South Carolina. He married Jane Benson? Abt 1758 in Frederick Co., Virginia?, daughter of William Benson. She was born Bet. 1740 - 1750 in Uwchlan Twp, Chester Co., Pennsylvania?, and died in Newberry Co., South Carolina?.

Notes for William Hilburn:
Surname spelled variously as Hilburn, Hilbourn, Helburn, Hillburn and Hillborn.

William Hilburn Sr is probably the landowner mentioned in Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants 1742 - 1775 by Gray (Vol 11 Page 114):
H. John Woodfin of Frederick Co., Va., 316 acres in said county surveyed by Mr. John Mauzy on Great Cacapehon River adjacent to William Hilburn on Great Rocky Ridge, 5 Oct 1756.
K-46 Mary Nisewanger of Hampshire Co., 400 acres in said county. Surveyed by Col. George Washington adjacent to William Hilbourn, John Woodfin dated 21 Nov 1757.

Wit: William Hilburn, John Ellemon, Abnew Allemon. Proved in Newberry Co. by the statement of John Elleman, May 30, 1797. Recorded Jun 16, 1797.

[This land transfer is from William Hilburn, Sr to Levi and is attested by William Hilburn, Jr.]

Newberry Co. Deed Books: Mar 10-11, 1791. 100 acres to William Hilburn Jr., two 100 acre plots to Levi Hilburn, 50 acres to Robert Hilburn. (from Michael Barr)

June 13 1797 - Land Transfer on record in the Newberry County Courthouse, Newberry, SC. Deed of William Hilburn to Levi Hilburn as recorded in the Office of the Clerk of Court, Newberry, SC in Deed Book "Q-2" page 24. Attest: George McKinsey, Pearson land, Summers, McKinney, William Hilburn, Sr., John Summers, Robert Hilburn, Allen Elmore, Y.J.Harrington, JQ Regr. [As this land transfer is from Wm Hilburn to Levi Hilburn and is attested by Wm. Hilburn, Sr., we conclude that this land transfer is from Wm Hilburn, Jr., the brother of Levi.]

Newberry County, South Carolina: Historical and Genealogical Annals, George Leland Summer, 1950, p 348:
Hilburn- William Hilburn belonged to the Bush River Meeting -- Quakers -- and lived in Newberry District. He married Jane ... and had children: Levi, William, Robert, Israel, Nathaniel, and others.

Levi Hilburn died about 1827, in Newberry District. He left widow, Jane, and children Nancy, Hugh, Richard, Matilda Jay, Malinda Wright, Mahala Haget, Matura Robers. Gr-ch: Hillery and Hannah Hilburn. Mrs. Jane Hilburn was daughter of Joseph Thompson. Melinda had married Wright. Henry married Rachel Duncan, and had children: Thomas T. (he married Nancy Wilson), Harriet, Rhilly, Reasy, Maddy, Rutha, Conrodia, and Orcathia. Henry died in 1828, and Rachel died after 1837. [As there is no record of the elder William having sons Israel and Nathaniel, researchers suspect these two in Summer's book are grandsons.]

There is current speculation that this William Hilburn is a son of Samuel Hillborn of Newtown Twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. William Hillborn is mentioned in the will of Stephen Twining, father of Abigail [Twining] Hillborn, wife of Samuel Hillborn:
Wills: Abstracts: Book 3 : Bucks Co, PA 1760-1778.
3.277. Stephen Twining, of Wrightstown, Yeoman. 8th mo., 8th day, 1771. Proved July 31, 1772. Wife Margaret. Son Stephen, exr. Dau. Abigail Hillborn's children, viz., Samuel, Joseph, Mary, Elizabeth Hillborn, 50 acres of land in Springfield Twp. adj. land late Casper Wistars and James Logan. Her other children, John, Thomas, William and David Hillborn. Dau. Mary Chapman, widow of John Chapman, 50 acres in Springfield afsd. adj. Jacob Hooker, Abrm. Funk and John Moffit. Son Stephen, 100 acres in Wrightstown adj. Richard Mitchell, late Hugh Young and late John Chapman. Son-in-law Samuel Hillborn, dau. Margaret, wife of Thomas Hamilton and her children, grandsons Stephen, William and Joseph Kirk. Thomas Kirk son of Isaac and Rachel. Wit: James Briggs, Jr., John Story, Jr., John Story.

Notes for Jane Benson?:
William Hilburn's wife Jane is named in the record of a 1779 land tansaction.

The appearance of the middle name "Benson" in several male descendants of this couple leads to the suspicion that Wm Hilburn's wife's maiden name is Benson. She could possibly belong to the Quaker family of Bensons that began with Robert Benson who appears in the early 1700s in Uwchlan Twsp, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. Among Robert's sons is John, who married Ann John. Alice Benson, daughter of John Benson, married (in 1777) Marmaduke Mendenhall at Wrightsborough MM, Columbia Co., Georgia, so we suspect that all of John's family was in Georgia in the 1770s. The Wrightsborough MM records show the transfer of a Jane Benson to Hopewell MM in 1783, but this Jane Benson is more likely a daughter of John Benson. Another son, James Benson, married Rachel John, sister of Ann - this family remained in Uwchlan Twp. Nothing more is known about two other sons of Robert Benson: William Benson, born abt 1710 and Robert Benson, born about 1716. Hence we suspect that one of these families was in the Frederick, Virginia area in the 1750s where a daughter Jane? Benson married William Hilburn, and this family later moved to Newberry, SC.

Children of William Hilburn and Jane Benson? are:
+ 2 i. William5 Hilburn, born Abt 1755 in Newberry Co., South Carolina; died Abt 1810 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.
+ 3 ii. Levi Hilburn, born Abt 1758 in Frederick Co., Virginia?; died 29 Dec 1826 in Newberry Co., South Carolina.
+ 4 iii. Robert Hilburn, born Abt 1759; died Aft. 1797.
+ 5 iv. John Hilburn, born Abt 1763 in Newberry Co., South Carolina; died 1850 in Paulding Co., Georgia.
+ 6 v. Henry Hilburn, born Bet. 1770 - 1775 in Newberry District, South Carolina; died Bet. 1827 - 1830 in Newberry County, South Carolina.

Generation No. 2

2. William5 Hilburn (William4) was born Abt 1755 in Newberry Co., South Carolina, and died Abt 1810 in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He married Jane (umn) Abt 1784 in Newberry Co., South Carolina?. She was born Abt 1770, and died Aft. 1830 in Tennessee?.

Notes for William Hilburn:
George Summer, in his Newberry, SC History, lists the children of William Hilburn as Levi, William, Robert, Israel, Nathaniel, and others.

William Hilburn in the Newberry Co. 1790 census:
1 male 16 or older (b. on/bef 1774)
1 male under 16 (b. 1775-1790) (Ambrose Hilburn (?) - b. abt 1788)
6 females (spouse plus five daughters born 1780-1790)

Michael barr speculates that this is the William HIlburn in the Edgefield Co., 1800 census: 157 21001-22100 - that is, 3 young males and five young females.

Notes for Jane (umn):
Newberry County, South Carolina: Historical and Genealogical Annals, George Leland Summer, 1950, p 348:
Hilburn- William Hilburn belonged to the Bush River Meeting -- Quakers -- and lived in Newberry District. He married Jane ... and had children: Levi, William, Robert, Israel, Nathanel, and others.
Levi Hilburn died about 1827, in Newberry District. He left widow, Jane, and children Nancy, Hugh, Richard, Matilda Jay, Malinda Wright, Mahala Haget, Matura Robers, Gr-ch: Hillery and Hannah Hilburn. Mrs. Jane Hilburn was daughter of Joseph Thompson. Melinda had married Wright. Henry married Rachel Duncan, and had children: Thomas T. (he married Nancy Wilson), Harriet, Rhilly, Reasy, Maddy, Rutha, Conrodia, and Orcathia. Henry died in 1828, and Rachel died after 1837.

Children of William Hilburn and Jane (umn) are:
7 i. Sally6 Hilburn, born Abt 1785. She married Robert Johnston 4 Nov 1807 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.
8 ii. Dorcas Hilburn, born Abt 1786. She married John Nivens 4 Apr 1809 in Sumner Co., Tennessee.
9 iii. Polly Hilburn, born Abt 1787. She married Hiram Campbell 22 Feb 1816.
10 iv. Ambrose Hilburn, born Abt 1788. He married Keziah Waglin 1 Jul 1812 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.

Notes for Ambrose Hilburn:
Michael Barr gives this time-line for his Ambrose Hilburn:

1812 Ambrose md Keziah Waglin in Davidson co Tn
1825 Ambros signed petition in Miller co Ark Territory
1826 Ambros name appears on the delinquent tax list
1829 Ambros on Sheriff's census of Washington co Ark terr. with 2 dau and 3 sons
1830 Ambros on Washington co Ark census as
1 m0-5 / 3 m 5-10 / 2 m 30-40
1f 0-5 / 1f 5-10 / 3f 10-15 / 1f 15-20 / 1f 30-40
1833 Hilburn township created then in Washington co Ark Terr but now Hilburn Post Office probably to be located on Ball Creek in Southern Madison co Ark Sec 8, T14N, R26W
1835 Ambros elected Magistrate Washington co Ark Terr.
1836 (Nov) Ambros by defacto, became Justice of the Peace for Madison co Ark

1839 Ambros was assessed taxes for 1839 in Franklin co Ark
1838 (Dec 6) Ambros was named on a note as assignee for Spencer Horner for a sum of $55
1840 Franklin co Ark census only listed Joseph Hilburn 1m 20-30 no others
1850 Grayson co Tx census Ambros age 66 (b 1784) b SC wife Mary 53 b NC children: Sam 20 b Ark Wade 18 b Ark Sarah age 15 b Ark (my ancestor md John Barr) Pris 13 b Ark E.H. 10 b Tx (male)
1852 (Jan 6 ) Laws of Tx Vol 3 pg 1065 An Act for the relief of Ambrose Hillburn - he was granted one league and labor of land as headright to which he is entitled by his emigration to the Republic of Texas with his family prior to the revolution in 1835.
1855 Sarah Hilborn marries John Newton Barr in Collin co Tx
1860 Collin co Tx census Ambros age 75 b SC wife Mary 65 b NC, Sam age 31 b Ark was md within census yr to Julia 23 b Indiana. Living between Ambros and Sam was: Hezekiah Chipman and wife Priscillia age 20 b Ark who is same as Pris age 13 in 1850 census above.
1860 Polk co Ark Sulphur springs twp was Wade Hilborn 25 b Ark, wife Lureny age 24 b Ark, Sarah J. 5 b Tx, Martha 3 B Tx, John A. 9/12 b Ark
1865 (July 1) Apparently Sam Hilburn died since his wife Julia A. Hilburn md James B. Brown in Red River Co., Texas on this date.

Most likely one of Ambros missing sons was: Lorenzo Dow Hilburn b Apr 10, 1824 on Washington-on-the-Brazos which would agree with the above Texas Law entry prior to 1835 his being in Texas. Also Lorenzo appears in Collin co Tx land records and he had son named Ambros and dau named Kizzie which could easily be nick name for Keziah!!

I lost track of Ambros and Mary Hilburn after land deeds dated about 1862 in Collin Co Texas. Joseph Hilburn b abt 1820 who appears briefly in Franklin co Ark 1840 census is probably another missing son.

11 v. Nancy Hilburn, born 1789. She married John Campbell 8 Aug 1817 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.
12 vi. Levi Hilburn, born Abt 1790.
+ 13 vii. Richard Hilburn, born Abt 1793; died 29 Apr 1867 in Atascosa Co., Texas.
14 viii. Robert Hilburn, born Abt 1794.
+ 15 ix. William B[enson?] Hilburn, born Abt 1796 in Newberry Co., South Carolina; died Abt 1865 in Sharp Co., Arkansas.

3. Levi5 Hilburn (William4) was born Abt 1758 in Frederick Co., Virginia?, and died 29 Dec 1826 in Newberry Co., South Carolina. He married Jane Thompson Abt 1780 in Newberry Co., South Carolina, daughter of Joseph Thompson and Ann Lupton. She was born Abt 1760 in Frederick Co., Virginia?, and died Aft. 1842 in Newberry Co., South Carolina.

Notes for Levi Hilburn:
The Jane Hilborn (sic) estate settlement of Aug 21, 1830 lists the following distributees of the estate:
The children of Henry Hilborn, deceased; Israel Hilborn; Richard Hilborn; Reason Hilborn; Miles Jan and wife, Matilda, [unk] Wright and wife Malinda, Mahala, John Rogers and wife Matura, Hugh Hilborn.
Other researchers claim that Levi also had sons Levi G. (b. 25 Dec 1794, a twin of Reason) and Thomas B[enson?] (b. Abt 1795), but these names do not appear in the estate settlement.

-------------
Analysis of the Levi Hilburn will:
- Henry, Hugh and Richard are probably his youngest sons, with Israel the eldest.
- The Henry, Hugh Hilbern at the public sale are probably sons. The Israel Hilbern could either be the son Israel or Israel (b. 22Sep1789, son of Wm.). David Dominick is probably the brother of the wife of Israel Hilburn (b. 1789). John Paysinger is the (then or future) husband of Levi's grand-daughter Hannah Hilburn. John Elmore is probably the son of Mathias Elmore (b. 1755).
- Reason Hilburn appears probably as a contestant to some part of the settlement.
-------------
Levi Hilburn in the 1790 Newberry Dist. census (same page as John, Robert, and Wm):
1 male 16 years and over (b. on/bef 1774) (Levi Hilburn b. abt 1758)
3 males under 16 (b. 1775-1790) ( unknown males b. 1774-1790) (Israel, Richard and Reason?)
1 female (Jane Thompson? b. bef 1765)

Levi Hilburn in the 1800 Newberry Dist. census (same page as John, Robert, and Ryley):
1 male 45 and over (b. on/bef 1755) (Levi Hilburn b. abt 1758)
1 male 16-26 (b. 1774-1784) (Unknown male b. 1774-1784)
2 males 10-16 (b. 1784-1790) (Two unknown males (Ezra and Alvin?) b. 1784-1790)
3 males under 10 (b. 1791-1800) (Thomas B. [b. abt 1795], Reason Hilburn [b. 1794] and Levi G. (b. 1794)
1 female 26-45 (b. 1755-1774) (Jane Thompson b. bef 1765)
1 female 16-26 (b. 1774-1784) (unknown famale b. 1774-1784)
1 female 10-16 (b. 1784-1790) (unknown female b. 1784-1790)

Levi Hilburn in the 1810 Newberry Co., census:
1 male 45 or over (b. on/bef 1765) (Levi Hilburn b. abt 1758)
2 males 16-26 (b. 1784-1794) (Reason Hilburn [b. 1794] and Richard Hilburn)
1 male 10-16 (b. 1794-1800) (Hugh Hilburn b. 1800)
1 male under 10 (b. 1801-1810) (Henry Hilburn b. 1802)
1 female 45 or over (b. on/bef 1765) (Jane Thompson b. bef 1765)
2 females 10-16 (b. 1794-1800) These four daughters are Malinda, Matilda,
2 females under 10 (b. 1801-1810) Matura, and Mehala

Analysis of census results:
Is it possible that the earlier three unknown sons and two unknown daughters are by a previous marriage?

The 1800 Census return contains an entry for Ryley (Rawleigh? Wyley?) and is the only instance of a Ryley Hilburn found so far :
(appears on the same page with Robert, John and Levi Hilburn)
1 male 26-45 (b. 1755-1774)
2 males 10-16 (b. 1784-1790)
3 males under 10 (b. 1791-1800)
1 female 26-45 (b. 1755-1774)
1 famale 16-26 (b. 1775-1784)
1 female 10-16 (b. 1784-1790)

As this return, except for the eldest male, is the same as Levi Hilburn, we suspect that this is a census error in which the next eldest male in the Levi Hilburn return stated the same data for the male children and females, omitting Levi Hilburn. Also, there is a possibility that Ryley is Israel (IsRial, in the local dialect).

Notes for Jane Thompson:
Jane Thompson was a daughter of Joseph Thompson, Sr., head of a Quaker family. This family apparently originated in Frederick Co., Virginia. The Bush River MM minutes contain a 1773 item that shows Jane and her brother and sister received from Hopewell MM into the Bush River MM as children of Joseph and Ann Thompson. Given that Jane was possibly 13-15 years old at this time, she would have been born in 1758-1760.

After Levi's death in 1826, Jane Thompson married John E. Bobo. This marriage is likely to have occurred in 1842. The settlement of Levi Hilburn's estate shows that she sold some of her former husband's properties to cover the estate's debts.

Children of Levi Hilburn and Jane Thompson are:
16 i. Israel6 Hilburn, born 22 Sep 1789; died 10 Apr 1837. He married Nancy Agnes Dominick 14 Nov 1816 in Newberry County, South Carolina.

Notes for Israel Hilburn:
This Israel Hilburn is probably the one in the 1820 and 1830 census for Newberry Co.:

1820
1 male 26-45 (b. 1775-1794)
1 female 16-26 (b. 1794-1804)

1830
1 male 40-50 (b. 1780-1790)
1 female 80-90 (b. 1740-1750)
1 female 30-40 (b. 1790-1800)
1 female 20-30 (b. 1800-1810)

Could the elderly woman in the 1830 census Israel Hilburn's grandmother (spouse of Wm. Hilburn, Sr.) or Mary Agnes Dominick's grandmother?

Michael Barr provides this information:
There is a two page document dated June 6, 1853 sworn before the Justice of the Peace at Greene Co Indiana. This is the result of Israel Hilburn dying without children.
"Know all men by these presents that we Leonard Nicholson and Drusilla Nicholson his wife, formerly Drusilla Hilburn formerly wife of Richard Hilburn, deceased of Newberry District, South Carolina, and Levi Hilburn son and only heir at law of the aforesaid Richard Hilburn and Drusilla Hilburn (here is your Drusilla and Levi); Rebecca Hilburn widow of the later Reason hilburn deceased formally of the district of Newberry State of South Carolina; Isaac Skomp and Abigail Skomp daughter of the aforesaid Reason Hilburn and Rebecca Hilburn, Daniel Chapman and Hannah Chapman daughter of Reason and Rebecca Hilburn; Ezra D. 4. Robert5 Hilburn (William4) was born Abt 1759, and died Aft. 1797. He married Sarah (umn).

Notes for Robert Hilburn:
The inference that Robert's wife's first name is "Sarah" is from the 1820 census return (which appears to be Robert's family) and the fact that all the other early wife's first names are accounted for (except for Ryley Hilburn).

5. John5 Hilburn (William4) was born Abt 1763 in Newberry Co., South Carolina, and died 1850 in Paulding Co., Georgia. He married Rebekah (umn).

Notes for John Hilburn:
This is probably the John Hillburn of Rev. War pension application S31745. According to B.G. Moss, "He was drafted to serve from October 1778 to Aug 1779 under Capt. Philemon Waters, Maj Purdue and Capt. Joseph Humphreys."

This is probably the John Hilburn cited in Newberry County, SC - Minutes of the County Court, 1785-1798:
State against John Hilburn July 1793, in Petit Larceny
State against John Hilburn and Thomas Johnson, July 1793, jury returned a true bill

Applied for a Revolutionary War soldiers pension May 2, 1838 from Paulding Co., Ga. On the application he stated he was 75 years old, which gives a birth date of about 1763. In a power of attorney executed in 1844, he stated he was a resident of Paulding Co., Ga. for 12 years previously.

Children of John Hilburn and Rebekah (umn) are:
27 i. Ambrose6 Hilburn, born Abt 1790. He met Peggy Moody 19 Nov 1810 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.

Notes for Ambrose Hilburn:
Placing this Ambrose here is a bit problematic. He married Peggy Moody in 1810, Davidson Co., TN. In 1811, Sevier Co., TN an Ambrose Hilburn was bondsman for Dinnan Moody and Patsy Durham. And Samuel Hilburn was drafted into the War of 1812 from Sevier Co. Since the "eastern Tennessee" Hilburns (Sevier Co. and Rhea Co.) are otherwise from the John Hilburn line, This Ambrose is placed with that line also.

29 iii. Allen Hilburn, born Abt 1795. He married Patsey Vincent 3 Jul 1824 in Rhea County, Tennessee.

Samuel Hilburn was drafted into the War of 1812 from Sevier Co., TN (1813).

Samuel Hilburn appears on the 1823 tax list for Rhea County.

+ 32 vi. John T. Hilburn, born 1801 in Newberry County, South Carolina; died 1862 in Ellis County, Texas.

Henry Hilburn and Rachel (Duncan) Hilburn were in Lawrence Co. (Washington Dist.) court in 1811 contesting the administration of the will of Rachel's father, John Duncan (Jr) (abt 1730-3May1809). John Duncan Jr. apparently left two administrators.

Notes for Jabez Carr Hilburn:
Dr. Jabez Hilburn was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on April 20, 1830. Both his father, Reason Hilbourn, and mother (formerly Rebecca Elmore) came from old line South Carolina families. His father probably operated a mill on the Bush river near the village of Newberry, S.C. In the 1820s his father moved to the Spartanburg area, then to Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana in 1835. Reason Hilburn was a farmer, and later was a partner in a Newberry store with Alexander Neff. Reason Hilburn died in July, 1844. His mother lived on until December 1872, when she died in Newberry at the home of Jabez' brother, Dr. Eber W. Hilburn. Jabez probably attended the Miami Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio, the same school his brother Eber attended. Jabez' other brother, Reason C. Hilburn, was an educator of some repute, having held the position of Newberry school principal for 15 years, and later appointed Greene County Superintendent of Schools. Jabez Hilburn married Bridget McGibney, a domestic in his parents household, on December 11, 1851 in Edwards' Port, Indiana. Four children were born before he entered service in the American civil war: James Newton Hilburn (December 2, 1852), William Herschel Hilburn (October 15, 1854 to September 7, 1856), Williard Buchannon Hilburn (September 7, 1856) and Jabez Carr Hilburn Jr. (August 22, 1861), all born in Owen County, Indiana.
On September 23rd, 1862 he received a commission as Assistant Surgeon in the 97th Indiana Volunteer Regiment. He saw service in the siege of Vicksburg (June/July 1863; XVI Army Corp), and later with the XV Army Corp in Sherman's Atlanta campaign (May/Sep 1864), and the March to the Sea (Nov/Dec 1864). During the Vicksburg campaign he began suffering from chronic dysentery and submitted his resignation, which was not accepted. He was promoted to Surgeon, 97th Indiana Infantry and put in charge of the XV Army Corp field hospital near Alatoona, Georgia after returning from 20 days of sickness (June 1864). (As was customary in the Atlanta campaign, regimental surgeons were attached to Corp hospitals.) Held the position of Medical Director, XV Army Corp, until discharged in June, 1865.
Three more children were born to Jabez and Bridget Hilburn after he returned to private life: Reason Hernando Hilburn (February 16, 1867), Harris Hilburn (November 6, 1869 - June 15, 1871), and Eva Bell Hilburn (October 16, 1872). He died in November 5, 1873 from complications of his service-related dysentry, and was buried in Greenbrier cemetery near Middletown, Indiana. Bridget later married again to a man named Reed.
