I live in williamsburg county about 5 miles from the old murray ferry site. It was at the end of the first public road established by law in williamsburg county. the road was from kingstree to murray's ferry, which was the crossing over the santee river. joseph murray was given the operation of the ferry for a term of 7 years. a host of prominent names of ferry operators followed. i think the last man to have this task was a man named Staggers probably about 1850. The home he built is still inhabited and in mint condition. owned by a doctor. Family names in the region: staggers, gambles, grahams, o'bryans, gourdins, and a host of others. most of my information was learned from boddie's history of williamsburg. A. L.
