Hoping to find relatives. My g-grandfather was Joel L. Bryant who died in Youngstown, Ohio in 1970 and was supposed to have been 109 years of age. According to his living children and the obituary, Joel's parents were WASH and RACHEL BRYANT. I have found them in the 1870 and 1880 census. Their children were Julia, George, Louisa, Tena, Hampton, John, Jimmy and Milly (twins) and Joel L.
You are more than welcome. Glad I could be of help and was in the region to do so. I did not see any birth/death dates in the church records but I could have overlooked them. You are more than welcome to use the I took photos on any other sites you so choose.

You should think about utilizing Findagrave more in your genealogical research. It actually has helped me much more than Ancestry.com in my family searches. The search results have been much quicker in my case

The Spooner's daughter married CJ McDougald. He really took care of Mary's family. In the 1860 census, all of her siblings were under his roof. One daughter, Rebecca Spooner, was committed to the Hospital for the insane in 1899 and either he or a son or brother was deposed and signed the committment papers. He said that both parents were dead of fever, so I believe that he had been taking care of Rebecca. I am glad that the Spooners are with the McDougalds. I'm glad to see the correct spelling, by the way.

Why oh why would they not put dates on the stones????? I will try to contact the church for the information. The nearest I can come to the death dates is 1880-1899. That's a pretty wide swath!

Yes I am a member of Find a Grave. I rarely go there but I will go immediately. Do you mind if I use your pictures in mmy tree?

Thanks again so much!

I have the photos of your Spooner relatives and have posted them in Findagrave. Are you a member of Findagrave? If not, join and let me know, I will transfer the memorials to you as the stones had no dates on them. They are buried in a line of McDougal's. Are they related to you as well?

Findagrave does not always have everyone listed who is buried in a particular cemetery. Findagrave is an all voluntary web site where people list memorials of loved ones and volunteers who have visited graves for photographic purposes for others. If you are positive that relatives are buried in this cemetery, then you can create the memorial for your relatives and do a photo request, then someone will physically go to the cemetery and take the photos for you. Like I stated, I will do my best to get there today or tomorrow

I don't know how accurate he is, but a book written by Gordon Bubber Jenkinson entitled "A History of the Homes and People of Williamsburgh District" discussed the Salters-Odom Home or Salters Plantation House. He states that Captain John Alexander Salters is "credited with founding the village of Salters because it was at his request that the Northeastern Railroad constructed a depot not far from h is house just after the Civil War." You can also go on-line and find a little more information about the depot, but in his book, he devotes a chapter to the plantation house.

Most of the slaves sold were done at the harbours when the boats landed.

There was a slave auction held routinely in Georgetown SC, which is about 42 miles from Kingstree as opposed to Charleston which is 73 miles or so away.

The auction was held at the town clock on Front Street in Georgetown which is now the Rice Museum. I imagine someone there may have access to the manifestos of ships coming into the Harbour.
I believe my great,great-grandmother lived in the Kingstree area in the 1840s. I believe that she lived on property originally known as McKey's Tract, owned later by the Strong family. She was eventually relocated to North Carolina.
Does anyone know where slaves were traditionally purchased from in that area during that era? I would like to find out how my ancestor got to Kingstree, as well as North Carolina. We know that her ancestors were from Camaroon, and she got to South Carolina by way of the West Indies, but don't know whether slaveowners in the Kingstree/Williamsburg area generally went to Charleston to auctions, or whether there was a place closer by where slaves were routinely purchased.

Thanks.

I am looking for some information regarding John Bradley, born 1756 in VA and a Rev Soldier. His son was Thomas Bradley. I am trying to prove the relationship for a DAR application. John Bradley was supposedly born in VA, moved to South Carolina where Thomas was born in 1785. They passed through Georgia and ended up in Clarke County, Alabama. Thomas died in 1849. John Bradley married a Penny Boney in Lauderdale County, Mississippi around 1846. I would like to know his wife's name or Thomas' mother, and his service in the Revolutionary War.

I hope that you may be able to help me.
Re: David Barrineau Young

I am not a descendant, but I do have a keen interest in the Young line. It seems to be inexplicably linked to my Young line in the late 1700's and early to mid 1800's. I want to find out more about David Barrineau Young's parents and grandparents.

However, I do have a lot of information on David Barrineau Young's descendants, looking for clues that could fill in gaps in his lineage.

I am not sure what exactly what kind of information you seek, so I am not sure how to help you without dumping all my data into a message....not practical, unfortunately.

So, I will start here:
1. David Moses Young's death certificate said his mother was Ida Long, didn't it? Though it does look like that first name was written in later by someone else. The 1880 census said the wife of David B. Young was Mary A. Do we know that David B. Young was not married 3 times rather than 2? I have not been able to confirm a name for the mother of any of the rest of Ida/Mary A. Long's children through death records. I do not have info confirming dates for Ida/Mary A. Long, either.

2. By the time Mary Jane Hendricks/Hendrix died in 1940, she had 3 step children and 1 child still living. One of the step-children was listed as Mrs. N. M. Young of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Who was this? Also, Mary Jane Hendricks/Hendrix had had 3 children (check 1900 census numbers), one dying young, but I have no name for this child.

3. It seems that Mary Jane Hendricks/Hendrix has Mary Chitty listed as her mother on her death certificate. I can find no other record of this name/person. Any ideas on this one?

4. Ida/Mary A. Long also had Mary Ann (m. J. P. Frierson) and Harry/Harvy Woffard Young, and, of course, the mysterious Mrs. N. M. Young of Oklahom mentioned in Mary Jane Hendricks/Hendrix Young's obituary.

5. William C. Young (b. 1874) supposedly died in Florida in 1957. I have not been able to confirm this.

6. What can you tell me about David Barrineau Young's parents and brothers?

I am interested in info on David B. Young, b. 1847 in Williamsburg County, and his descendants. He married a relative of mine, Mary Jane Hendricks from Echols County, Georgia where he lived for sometime. He later moved back to Williamsburg County and died there in 1920.

David's first wife was Mary Ann Long (1852-1887) and his children by her were: Mary (b. 1883), William C. (b. c1875), David Moses (1878-1935) and Edith Adeline (1873-1919). Edith also married a Hendricks, Nathan T. Hendricks who was half-brother to Mary Jane! Mary Ann Long Young died in Echols County, GA and is buried there.

David apparently had two children by Mary Jane, Peter Mason (1890-1916) and Walter P. Young (1889-1952). I have a little more info on further descendants.

I am very interested in these Young-Hendricks connections and would love converse with any descendants of these folks.

Paul M.
Hello Barbara,
I know what you mean. I had an ancestor in Maryland in the 1830's who was married with a large number of children; his wife died, his children were grown or nearly grown and he decided to move on. He ended up in Missouri where he married and had another large family. When he died and the will was read, the Missouri children were puzzled since they had no clue who these other people were. As for the Maryland children, they had their own families by this time and I don't think they particularly cared one way or the other. I had to admit that it was interesting--and rather amusing. I have often wondered why I didn't get interested in genealogy while my grandmother was alive and could have shed some real light on things--but then maybe she didn't know anymore than I do.

Yes, please feel free to jump in with ideas at any time. Maybe we'll have some ideas that will help you with your research. Feel free to email me at luv_u_suzieq@yahoo.com.
Sorry to interject in your conversation but I have the same problem with my grandfather. He was from Horry County SC and Sampson County NC. His given name is John O Milligan but he went by 2 other names, making a change from John O to Jack J. and from John O & Jack J to Oliver J. Was married 3 times. The family from which I have descended never knew about the other families. So far everything was legitimate as each of the wive's died. It is looking like he just left the kids with the wife's side and moved on. Since this all happened between 1856 and 1920, It has been a nightmare trying to connect the pieces.

Your family history has been interesting to read as I can relate to your frustration and I thank you so very much for sharing your story.
Zeno--that's one I haven't run across before. Did you check the SSDI for him? Talking about changing your name, when my late father-in-law retired some paperwork came addressed to Roland Edgar Nash and since everyone knew my f-i-l as Eugene Jesse Nash, they naturally thought he'd received something meant for someone else. He said no, it was correct, Roland Edgar was his correct name. Apparently when he was about 10 he asked his mother if he could call himself Eugene Jesse, he had an Uncle Jesse that he was very fond of, and his mother said she was okay with that, so he did. He never told anyone and my mother-in-law went to her grave believing she was married to Eugene Jesse Nash. In fact I have a brother-in-law named Eugene Jesse, Jr., his son is Eugene Jesse III, and his son is Eugene Jesse IV.

Suzie

Hi Suzie,

The brother named Zeno lived somewhere in Ohio around 1984, I'm not sure if that was his given name or not. I really don't know much about him, what I do know is that my family seems to change their names around I guess depending on how they feel. My grandmother for one has done that quite a bit, I was very close to her so that's stands the reason I know what to look for when researching her. My grandmother also had a daughter name Suzie, but according to my mother, she passed away I think as a baby, I've never been able to get any information on her either. Oh well, the search continues, it's a long road but someone has to do.

Take care, and happy searching :-)

Toni
