Henry Bollman of Charlestown

My 3x great grandfather, Henry Bollman, is much of a mystery. De was born in "Charlestown, US" around 1854. However, he appears in none of the Censuses. He was a young seaman, and went ashore in Norway around 1872, probably at age 19. He stayed there, and only went back in his late 50's to live in the Norwegian colony in Brooklyn after about 1910. He probably died there. Do anyone have good clues as to how to find him when he's not in the censuses?
