Henry Bollman of Charlestown

My 3x great grandfather, Henry Bollman, is much of a mystery. De was born in "Charlestown, US" around 1854. However, he appears in none of the Censuses. He was a young seaman, and went ashore in Norway around 1872, probably at age 19. He stayed there, and only went back in his late 50's to live in the Norwegian colony in Brooklyn after about 1910. He probably died there. Do anyone have good clues as to how to find him when he's not in the censuses?

Erlend Bollman Bjortvedt, Oslo

WHO WAS WILLIAM MAINE (ca 1720) HUSBAND OF JUDITH GIGNILLIAT?

Hope someone can help me. I'm seeking parentage, descendants and birthplace for William Maine, b. ca 1720, who m: 1752 Judith Gignilliat, b. 1724, d. 1789, dau. of Henry Gignilliat and Esther Marion. He at one time owned a plantation in Pr. William Parish, Granville Co., between the Combahee and Pocataligo Rivers. I believe he was the grandfather of my 3x ggrandfather, William Maine, b. 1796 in SC, who later moved to Lowndes Co., GA. I know there was a William Maine(Main) in Charles Town in the 1680s. Is there a link between him and William Maine of Pr. William Parish? Were the Maines Hugenots, like the Gignilliats? I'd appreciate any and all help and/or guidance on this one. It's been a real dead-end for a long, long time.

I am looking for a complete list of ships/dates for arrivals in Charles Town/Port Royal before and including 1673. I have searched the web, including several very good sites of passenger list transcriptions. However, they have not had the information for which I was searching. I would like to know where I can find original/copies of original records for this very early period in Charleston's history. I would also like to find passenger lists for as many of those ships as possible. Are there any such resources for me, living in Texas?

Family lore has it that our JOSEPH BURCH was born in St. Philips Parish, Charleston, SC circa 1740. JOSEPH BURCH married MARY ANN FISHER 11 May 1762 in St. Philips Parish, Charleston, SC. They settled in Marion District, SC.

I have not been able to find out who JOSEPH BURCH'S parents are, but if JOSEPH was born in St. Philips Parish, there must be a record naming his parents somewhere. I have contacted St. Philips Episcopal Church and they have no record of JOSEPH'S birth.

JOSEPH BURCH'S son, EDWARD BURCH, married MARY ANN WILSON 02 May 1797 in Charleston, SC.

WILLIAM BURCH married CAROLINA LANGDON 08 Jun 1747 in Charleston, SC. I don't know how WILLIAM BURCH is related to JOSEPH BURCH ~ perhaps a brother?

Family legend also has it that the first BURCH in our line to come to America was JOHN BURCH who settled in the Georgetown area in 1684. I haven't been able to find a passenger list that names this JOHN BURCH or any other records. We believe JOHN BURCH entered America at Charles Town.

I believe we are missing a generation between JOHN BURCH and JOSEPH BURCH.

Can anyone tell me where to look for the answers to these questions?

Thank you so much.

Kathy Burch Williams

Smiths from Bermuda, to Charleston & Catherine Randall & America Ella Smith Hester (Kernghan)

My grandparents left me some excellent genealogy work
they did back in the 1950's or 60's, long before the
benefits of the internet.

One area that they didn't know much about, is giving me
a lot of trouble too. Naturally, it involves the name
Smith, which is anything but unique. I've got lots of
pieces of the puzzle, so here it goes.

America Ella Smith Hester is where the problem is.
She married Thomas John Kernaghan in August 26, 1866.
1870 census list her only as AE Kernaghan and she was
likely born in 1846 (24 at that time) and had one kid
Thomas B. Kernaghan, age 2.

She died a year later in Feb. 1871. I found her grave
in Augusta Georgia, which was across the river from
where her parent-in-laws lived in 1870. Her in-laws
are buried in the same family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.
Her mother is Katherine Randall or Catherine Randall.
On the chart my grand parents left, it was Catherine,
but on an old photograph of a painting of her, is was
hand written on the back as Katherine. America Ella's
father was a Smith. She was born in Charleston SC.

From a letter to my grandmother dated 1924, from a
Mamie Ham, at 434 S. Church St. Florence, SC, who was
apparently an grand-aunt of my grandmother, she said
the following:

"I am sorry, can help you but very little on the
anceastral line. I have always lived away from my
people, and had sacarcely any intercourse with them,
so really know very little about them. However I
can tell you the names of my mothers brothers and
sisters. They are John Smith, Kate, Rosa, Emery,
Annie and Theodore (living) and Julia. Rosa, John,
Kate and Julia are dead. I do not know where the
others live, or wheather they are living. I don't
know of any cousins except the children of Aunt Julia,
Mrs. Ella Burch of Florance, Mrs. Agnes Walton of
Charleston, SC and Thomas Lamb. The last time I
heard from Thomas was from Waycross Ga. I expect
to go to Charleston in a few days and I may learn
something from Miss Carrie Smith. If I do I will
write you. Great-grand-father Smith came from
England and settled in Charleston, SC, But I do not
konw in what year. He was very wealthy. Grandfather
and his brother William are the only two of his
children I know about. I am quite an old woman,
but getting about pretty lively.

Aunt Mamie
434 S. Church St.
Florence, SC."

This is partially a good clue, but I think it
contains a mistake. I think Mamie Ham is actually
Mary Hester, who was a half sister of America Ella
Smith Hester. Catherine Randall's second husband was
Hester. The 1870 census shows Mary Hester was 8 and
living in the same house with AE Kernaghan. There is
no way she had a kid when she was 16. I really
think that Mary Hester was so young when she got
removed from her real mother, Catherine Randall,
that she viewed AE as her mother and not her sister.
She also says the Smiths came from England. What
I've heard from my grandmother when she was alive,
was that they came from Bermuda.

One final clue is that my grandparents wrote down
the names and dates of a Smith plot in some cemetery
somewhere. I have no idea where the cemetery is.

William Smith Sr. came to this country from
Bermuda in 1746. He died in 1842 - age 70 years.

Eliza Smith, wife of William Smith Sr. died Jan 30,
1874. Age 79 years, 5 mos and 20 days.

William J. Smith. Born April 11, 1798; died Aug 5
1881. Age 83 years 3 mos 25 days.

Elizabeth Cozzens Smith, wife of William Smith.
Born Aug 12 1809. Died Sept 27 1841. Age 32 years
1 mo. 15 days.

Mary Caroline Smith, wife of William John Smith.
Born Nov 12 1815. Died June 2 1856

Arthur Smith, born May 19 1856; died April 27 1857
- age 11 mos 8 days.

Anna M. Smith, wife of William J. Smith. Born Feb
27 1831; died Nov. 24 1876, age 45 years 8 mos 28 days

Horation Nelson Smith - born Sep 8 1835; died July 8
1836. Age 17 mos.

Catherine Spencer Smith - wife of William Smith.
Died Feb 6, 1823. Age 52 years 8 mos 17 days.

Deborah Steedman, daughter of William Smith Sr.
Died June 16 1839, Age 30 years 5 mos 29 days

Our Father - Edward Smith. Born Jaun 13 1800;
died Dec 7 1869. Age 69 years 10 mos. 24 days.

Our Sister - Rebecca Bonnell Smith; Born Nov 2 1846;
died Nov 7 1867. Age 21 years 5 days.

None of these graves have enough information to link
a single Smith to Catherine Randall or America Ella Smith.

My interpretation of events was that Catherine Randall's
first husband, the unknown Smith, must have died very
young. Perhaps the civil war. Her next husband must
have also died, or maybe they both died, since I see
that Mary Hester is living with the Kernighan's.

In 1900, I see George Kernaghan had a Marion Randall
living in his house. She was listed as a neice-in-law.
George was the brother of Thomas John Kernaghan.
Marion was born in Florida around 1870.

This family seems to have been fragmented and left very
little documentation that survived. The fire of the 1890
census records, plus the earthquake in Charleston of 1886
both help to make this difficult.

Question is, does any one know anything about a Smith
line that came from Bermuda and moved to Charleston?
Hi!

I'm a journalist in Sweden, doing research about pianist/composer Emelie Holmberg (alt spelling Emilie). She was married to Hjalmar Hammarskjold and they had four children.

Mrs Hammarskjold/Holmberg is said to have founded a philharmonic orchestra in Charleston before becoming organ player at S:t Peter's Church.

She lived in Charleston from 1844 to 1854, when she died. Mr Hammarskjold remarried Annie Hancock and they had one son, Hjalmar Hancock Hammarskjold.

Does any of this ring any bells?

I'm interested in anything, in particular which orchestra she founded.

/Mats Karlsson

I have a copy of a letter written by Bishop Wood of Philadelphia stating that Reverend Thomas Reardon of Easton, PA had volunteered to go to Charleston in March 1865 to aid the people of the city. The Diocesan Archivist in Charleston said that there was no information in the Archives there to corroborate this. Would any one know of any parish history or Civil War writings that might document his time in the city? It is also quite possible that his visit is not recorded or was lost.

Here is the transcribed letter-

Diocese of Philadelphia
Cathedral, Logan Square
Philadelphia, March 15, 1865

Most Rev’d. M J Spalding D.D.
Rev. Father Reardon formerly of [?] has consented to step into the aid of the deserted Charlestonians. He will present these lines to yr Grace and I have no doubt that he will bring comfort to many a desolate heart in the fallen city.

I am ever sincerely respectfully your [?] servant [?]
+James F Wood
Bishop of Philadelphia
Stephen Watson Marriage to Eliza Torrenza ?

Stephen Watson (1797-1878), Merchant and British Subject (born Manchester, UK), lived in Charleston between 1824 until between 1851 and 1861. He is listed in the 1850 US census with wife Eliza T (the T stands for Torrenza, a name that has since passed down the generations). He is also listed as a slave owner in the 1850 census. Athough in the US census it is stated that Eliza was born in UK, later census taken in Britain list her as born in Charleston (they appear in 1861 census in Liverpool, and thereafter until their deaths). I cannot locate a record of their marriage through Ancestry online, can anyone advise me of where to look? I would love to know her maiden name.

Best,

Jessamy

Isaac Joiner/Joyner of SC and Henry Co., Georgia b. 1813

I have traced my family back to about 1830 maybe 1820, but I am having problems narrowing down how to find his father. It appears his father could be named Isaac, John, James, and a couple of other names, I don't remember right off the top of my head. I do know that this Isaac married a Jane Willingham once he went to Henry Co., his section later to be in the area carved out to be Newton Co. Jane had a nickname of "Jinsey or Gincey" spelled both ways on different census reports. He also changed the spelling of the name from "i" to "y" sometime between 1850 and 1870. There is no information on the 1860 census info that is available. They had 6 kids: Henry, Mary, Isaac, David, Thomas and John. Of these, Isaac is my ancestor. I have tracked him back to SC and to the area of St. James Goose Creek in 1820--I'm pretty sure. His census of 1850n states he's from SC and his 1880 census states that his parents are from NC. Anyone with having any info can email me at doubltrouble@bellsouth.net. I will be so grateful--I'm stuck and very much need a push in the right direction. Thanks.

Francis Marion - St. John's Berkeley Parish, S.C.

Francis Marion, born in St. John's Parish, S.C., in 1732, pursued a brief career on the sea before turning to plantation life. His service with the militia against the Cherokee Indians brought statewide renown and in 1775 he was elected to the Provincial Congress and captain of the South Carolina Second Regiment. As Lieutenant Colonel in the Continental Army he participated significantly in the defense of Savannah and Charleston. Following the debacle at the latter city he was given command of a volunteer brigade whose efficient guerrilla tactics demoralized the enemy, debilitated their logistic and strategic positions, and earned for him the sobriquet "Swamp Fox". Commissioned a Brigadier General, he joined "Light Horse Harry" Lee in capturing a number of British strongholds which contributed to the enemy's ultimate defeat. At the end of the war, Gen. Marion returned to plantation life, but remained active in militia and local political affairs until his death in 1795.

Gen. Marion represented St. John's Berkeley at the Provincial Congress of 1775. n 1781 he was a senator for St. John's to the Jacksonboro Assembly. He fought in the Cherokee Wars (1760-1761), was a major at Ft. Moultrie and was advanced to Brigadier General in 1780. (South Carolina Genealogies, Volume II, p. 35)

Does anyone know of a list of the soldiers who served with the German Fusiliers of Charles Town SC and fought the British during the Revolutionary War?

...in May, 1774, Alexander Gillon, Peter Boquet, Michael Kalteissen, William Livingston and Gideon Dupont "collected together one hundred and thirty-seven Germans," who at once organized under the name of the German Fusiliers.

In 1779, General Lincoln, of the continental Army, having been placed in command of the State troops, made a call for the militia; and in response, the Fusiliers, numbering sixty-four privates, with a full complement of officers, non-commissioned officers and musicians, took to the field. During one disastrous expedition, the Fusiliers fought gallantly but the commander found it necessary to order a retreat. However Captain Sheppard, refused to obey the order to retreat. At his command the Fusiliers continued to advance, marking each step of their way with blood, until Sheppard was shot down, when a retreat took place. In this campaign, Lieutenant Joseph Kimmel was killed, and a number of the members of the company killed and severely wounded. The Corps ultimately reached home under the command of Lieutenants Strobel and Sass.....
I am searching for the parents of my ancestor, Thomas Sutton, born circa 1790- 1800. It is said that he immigrated from England to the Carolinas, where his parents had arrived earlier (I found a John Sutton in Charleston Neck in the 1830, who stated that he was foreign, not naturalized). He appears in Mississippi in 1820. He is said to have had relatives in Sheffield, England. In the 1830 Mississippi census, he stated that he was “alien: foreign born not naturalized”. He purchased a sawmill and grist mill in Jefferson County, MS, in 1826. A sawmill would have been an excellent money-making opportunity in the growing new state. He married Phebe Humphries in 1820. Their children were: John, Stephen, Thomas, Margaret, and another daughter whose name is not known. He and Phebe paid for the education of all 5 children. One son, Stephen, joined the local Masonic lodge. For more detailed information, please visit my website at www.geocities.com/sutton_genealogy.

Mary Ann settled in Marshall County Alabama and married one Andrew King of Meltonsville, AL in August 1836. She changed spelling to Rollins on marriage record. She had one daughter when she married Andrew King, Nancy Jane. Nancy Jane married Jonathan D. Shipp in 1857 spelling her name Rollings. Marriage record stated she married at home of Andrew King. Nancy was born in Alabama in 1833or 34. Any help would be appreciated.

Leger * Legere* Legare* Liequer surname

The census takers have destroyed the name. I am searching for any information on the surname. I found a Samuel S, Leger in Lowndes Co. Ga 1860, married to a Martha from Fl. Samuel states he was born in SC abt 1822. Served in the Civil War and died before 1870 after his service. Found in Fl a Moses S, Leger from SC. whom I believe is the father to Samuel. 1830 Santee SC finds a Daniel, James, Stewart M. and a Samuel Leger. The will of a John Leger states heirs of his cousin William went to the west lands? I think he meant TN, GA, Al as I find them there in later census. Perhaps this Stewart M. is the same fellow Moses S. Stewart, Samuel and James stayed in my line after the 1900 census and are found in GA with the name spelled Ledger. Would appreciate any information on this name. I have copies all the census pages with same name and am almost finished doing the 1850 AL census and no luck.

Diana
Diana@grtm.us

Hi,
I am trying to find out what churches there were in the Charles Town area in the Early 1700 -1720, time period, and if the records were kept there or sent to England to mother churches. Does anyone know where we can find such records, or how to search for them? Is there any list of the churches for that time period in that area? Our Ancestor was there at that time, but we can't find much on him.
Thanks so much, Becky

Is it possible to find a will of person who died 17 May 1828 age 76 years? I am trying to find one for John Gordon, Sr. who died on said date. His name was in Gordon Bible and wonder what the relationship was. Because the bible was in Charleston for many years before being passed to other family, believe him to have died there. Also same Bible has Elizabeth Elliott born 12 Jan 1753 and died 16 Feb 1823 at 70 years of age. Was told she is buried in Pon Pon Chapel of Ease aka Brick/Burnt Church in Colleton near Parkers Ferry Road. If they were entered in the bible records, then know they must be related.

Hope records go back this far.
Mary

I do not know where He was born but He shows up in Franklin County,Tennessee about 1810(About the Time He married Delilah(Maiden name unknown). Does anyone have a Thomas Jackson who was born in 1790? One of His sibblings could be a Miles Jackson who was born close to that time. I think that Thomas was probably born in Georgia,North or South Carolina since Tennesee was not a state in 1790. Anyone with a Thomas Jackson Born about 1790 please send me a e-mail.

I have just spent 3years on a wild goose chase looking for Mary Elizabeth Connor whom family said came from North Carolina and was part Cherokee. Since the publishing of the English 1861 census it now seems she was born in Charleston South Carolina!! (this would fit in with the fact that her father was a mariner) She was born in 1842 (no date known) and her father was an English mariner James Connor. When her mother died c1860James brought Mary Elizabeth home to England and she eventually married James Altham and started my branch of the family tree. Does anyone have access to the Birth records for Charleston? I know it is difficult without a birth date but I cannot seem to find one despite being in touch with many of the family over the years.
Many thanks,
Carol

Elliott/Gordon

I am really stumped now. After making a trip to SC to view and scan the Gordon Bible that was given to my 3rd great grandmother, Catherine Ann Belser by her husband, William Edward Gordon in 1807, I found on one page an Elizabeth Elliott b. 12 Jan 1753 d. 15 Feb 1823 and a John Gordon, Sr d. 17 May 1828 (he would have been born abt 1752). I have been led to believe that above W. E. Gordon's parents were W. E. Sr and Elizabeth Elliott, yet why would Catharine have this John in bible and not Jr.'s father unless he is the father. A note at bottom of death page says they are buried in Brick Churchyard Cemetery, seven miles above Parkers Ferry, (Colleton SC) which I have been to this cemetery but many markers are missing.

I hope someone can help me with this mystery.
Mary Gordon Smith

William Ball family of Berkeley Co., SC

To whom it might concern:

My William Ball family was in St. John's Parish, Berkeley Co., SC., and not in the Charles Town SC Parish. Two sons, Sampson and Bartholomew have been indisputably proven as has a grandson, George Ball, and a granddaughter, Ann Cook. Based on the fact there was a Cook granddaughter, I must assume that William had at least one daughter whose given name is not known. However, she was married to John Cook. The Cooks also had a son John Cook, Jr., who married Elizabeth Mahan. If I'm right, Elizabeth was a sister to Hezekiah Mahan. Hezekiah was well known for his role in the Rev. War as he fought with General Marion. I would like to correspond with anyone who has the same connections as I. My e-mail address is <almb@bellsouth.net>. Thanks for taking the time to respond. mm

In the book "Family Names of County Cork" by Diarmuid Ó Murchadha, page 185, reference is made to an O'Driscoll family of Charleston, USA circa 1840-1850. The book suggests this family are lineal descendants of Col. Cornelius O'Driscoll circa 1650. Col. Cornelius is a key figure in the O'Driscoll history.

We in the DRISCOLL OF CORK DNA project would very much like to connect with a descendant of this family. Any leads will be very much appreciated!

Our project is described here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~colin/DriscollOfCor...

DODD, CHARLESTON, SC,gunmaker for Gen Washington

My Jonathan Dodd born 1784 SC is in Johnston CO.NC and then moves into Ala just as it is open for settlers. He had a son born 1815 NC (Johnston CO) and a son born 1820 in ALABAMA--so, in those five years he moved again--.

We believe his first wife (unknown name) died after the birth of her second son born 1820 Clark Co.ALA. and Jonathan now age 36, married a woman we have been told was: Loucendia (MARTIN) McDowell.b.1802 (she married McDowell in Clark Co.ALA)---and had some children and then married DODD and had possibly two or three more? We have no marriage for her and Jonathan Dodd. AND, have been told by the McDowell people that she was buried in the Bladon Springs area as Loucendia MCDOWELL..and it appears at least two of her sons listed as Dodd on the 1850 census are listed as McDOWELLS in the 1860 census. Why they changed sirnames and then changed back is not known? We guess that Jonathn Dodd died between the 1850 census and the 1860 census. He was a gunsmith.

1. Was Jonathan Dodd the gunsmith born 1784 in South Carolina--an apprentice or indentured or raised by a guardian in the DODD family of JOHN DODD the gunsmith of Charleston SC? a man who made and sold and repaired guns for General Washington but died (before or almost when) Jonathan was born?

2. His business was kept running by sons, and we wonder if the young Jonathan was trained there?

3.Was John Dodd of Charleston a relative?

4. Was John Dodd of Charleston SC and the man we think was Jonathans father (William DODD) of SC and also of Chathom Co.NC, related?

5. IS ANYONE on this DODD list OR the CHARLESTON CITY, a descendant of the CHARLESTON, SC DODD family of John DODD, the gunsmith? Do you have a male Descendant Dodd who would be willing to enter his DNA in the DODD family DNA search?

judy grimes
I have peices of where others in my family have put together most of our family tree but they stopped on one limb and it is an important limb so therefore, I am trying to finish it. I am looking for information on Patrick Bryans, supposedly of Ireland and settled in Laurens County, South Carolina. He was probably born somewhere around 1750 and he died in 1806 in Greene County, what would eventually become Morgan Co. He was married to Elizabeth (Betsy) Adair Jones (widow of John Jones of Laurens Co., formerly of Charleston, Co. I have limited info on Pat, but do know that he was the executor of John's will and estate, along with Betsy. I would like to find a copy of John's will and Betsy's, but mostly would like more info on Pat. I have his will and it leaves stuff to 2 daughters that I was not aware of when I started and still don't have any proof. These would be Rebekah, and Elizabeth, and a granddaughter, Mary Simmons. Anyone who can point me in the right direction to find any of this information please contafct me at doubltrouble@bellsouth.net.
I found in the 1809 directory of Charleston there are a William Edward Gordon, butcher on Neck Rd and a William Gordon, Grocer at 87 King St. Then in the 1813 directory the is William E Gordon, butcher, Hamstead and William Gordon, grocer at 96 King St. In 1819 there is a Edward William Gordon on Meeting St. Being as I have a William E Sr and Jr in Charleston at this time, I would not know which is which unless they needed some type of license to do business that maybe gave an age, which is unlikely. One was married to an Elizabeth Elliott and one to Catherine Belser. Hope someone can help me with this mystery.
Mary

This has been our brick wall for many years. Had a great aunt that was working on our tree, and she left us this info. This is what I desperately need help with.

Willliam Edward Gordon, Sr. b.? mid to late 1700s m. Elizabeth Elliott d. 1817 according to her notes, yet I find two census reports for Charleson in 1820 with William E Gordon, one has an older male and an older female. The other fits the profile of his son, William Jr b.1781 d.1832 that married a Catherine Belser. The latter are buried in PonPon Chapel of Ease aka Brick/Burnt Church in Colleton SC near Harpers Ferry. I can not find anything on the first couple. I sent for the will of a William made during this time frame, but was not mine. I did receive a newpaper article that mentioned the latter William's marriage to Catherine that said he was of THE Round O. Do not know if this was the name of a home or town. If the family followed tradition, I would think the first practiced the Presbyterian Religious beliefs. I am desperate to locate this couple. It was ascertained that first was from Scotland. Would ever appreciated for any information on this family.

There was a book regarding the Belser family published once but no longer in publication. It was dedicated to above Catherine Ann Belser. I have talked to several people with copiies of this book that said would copy to me, but never received. Please help.
Mary Gordon Smith

I just received some info on my ggggrandparents marriage in the Charleston Times, stating that William Edward Gordon, of Round O, married Catherine Ann Belser, of Charleston. The question I have, was the Round O a plantation/town/city??? Seems it would have been a plantation, but have never found anything about this in family records. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mary Gordon Smith
