I came across your posting this morning. I am fairly new to geneology.
My wife's great-grandmother was Nora Olsen, born 28 Aug 1886. She had a brother Oscar who is buried next to his mother Karen Olsen. Please contact me if this might be the Nora Olsen your looking for. I have quite a bit of information from Nora's daughter Ruth.

Hi,

You can order a copy of his death certificate from south Dakota Health Dept., http://doh/sd.gov/VitalRecords/genealogy.aspx. Hopefully the Informant knew where and when he was born and who his parents were. If they did, it will appear on his death certificate.

It appears that he might have been previously married according to the Smith Family Tree, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/23547168/person/1400390787.

Joseph G. Smith b. June 19, 1884 Storm lake, Buena Vista, Iowa. Married to Maria Mercedes Smith b. Adair, Iowa and died 29 April 1938.

Their Joseph G. Smith died 13 Oct 1944 in White, Brookings, South Dakota.

However, family trees have been known to be incorrect.

In 1930 in Oak Lake, Brookings, South Dakota there was a Joe G. Smith, wife Mary and several children living in Oak Lake.

The Brookings Area Genealogical Society, 515 Third St., Brookings, SD 57006 might have a copy of Joe's obituary.
Hi Angie,

My great aunt Amy Halstead married Herbert Den Otter the oldest of that family and had several children. The daughter Gladys also married a great uncle of mine also. Check out my family tree, Heim, Strait Family tree. Amy was a sister of my grandmother, Maude Halstead Heim. I have tracked Aunt Amys children to as close as I can. This is all that I know. I never met Herbert Den Otter, but my Uncle Wendell is still living and personally knew him. I hope this helps.

Star Hein Theodore, sehein61@yahoo.com

The occasion of the 1866 marriage of Friedrich Schlottman & Eva Port was published in local German newspapers. These were brief notices (some with wedding verses) placed in the papers, most likely by the ministers - but not like the later lists compiled from the Registrar's office. Contact me for more information.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items (1844-1950).

I'm wondering also if this isn't a studio in Arkansas?

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I have created an article on my blog about this photo, so hopefully we find some relatives.

http://pennysgenes.blogspot.com/2011/03/mystery-monday-mr-br...
I am curious regarding whether you eventually received any information about Mayme Griffin. We have searched high and wide for information on my grandmother, Mayme Griffin. My Mayme Griffin was born in Minnesota or North Dakota, and lived at various locations in the upper midwest. We believe that she married a gentleman named Holt, had a daughter, Muriel, and then her husband died. She took Muriel and emigrated to Bladworth SK. She met my grandfather, C. H. Lummis in Bladworth. They married and had 5 children between 1910 and August 1, 1917, when she died and was buried in Bladworth. Hers seems to be an unusual name, so I was hoping that you might have come across my Mayme Griffin during your search.
Thanks - Michael Lummis - kcmitchellpapa@aol.com

I just did a little research (very quickly) with the Ancestry census records.

In the 1885 Territorial Census and the 1900 Federal Census, it appears there was an Andrew Bradley born about 1834/5 in New York. Looks like his wife Martha had 2 children a William and another child that didn't survive. Martha and William were also born in New York. They appear in the Moody county census, which would be just down the road. Brookings was and is still the major hub city for a large portion of Moody county.

There are several records for "James Monroe", though they were born in a variety of locations including Kansas, Iowa, Canada, Massachussettes and Illinois.

I'll let you know if we discover any other details!

~Penny

That would be great-The picture was with a group of pictures that ended up in a home in Mechanicville, NY

All of them were identified on the back and most refer to a COON Family from Otsego County, NY. My last name is Coons so the pictures were given to me. None of them connect to my husband's Coons' Family.

I have not been able to trace them from census records except for a Mary Coon married to a Dr Thayer living in San Francisco about 1880-I did find a person interested in Dr Thayer as he was tracing the Thayer Family from Otsego County, NY

If you send me your mailing address through Ancestry I'll mail it to you and you can do what you want with it. If you ever find out who the man is and his relationship to Brooklings would you let me know.

Kathy

The picture I have just says

Brooklings Dakota

According to what you found on O G Oyloe and South Dakota being formed in the latter part of 1889 this picture was probably taken in 1889.

This picture does not connect to my family. Do you know anyone who would like it? I don't know if you only collect your own family or any photos that were taken in Brooklings.

Kathy

I just found the perfect reference!

According to the book titled "They Captured the Moment: Dakotas Photographers 1853-1920", Ole Oyloe was a photographer from 1889-1921 in the town of Brookings.

From 1891-1900, Ole Oyloe was also a photographer in Elkton, which is about 20 miles southeast of Brookings (city). The Elkton studio is the studio he bought from Jarvis in 1891. Elkton is also in Brookings County. So I wonder if some of the photos from this studio may have had the Brookings inscription as well.

Kathy,

Does the photographer's inscription say "Dakota" or did it say "S Dak" or any other variation of South Dakota?

A couple years ago when I searched for photographers in the Brookings area, I found a directory that said in 1890 Ole G Oyloe was a photographer.

However, if the inscription just said "Dakota" that would likely indicate it is from before 1890. South Dakota
became a state on November 2, 1889.

I also read that Ole Oyloe bought out a photographer named Jarvis in 1891. Then in later years, John G Oyloe and Conrad Oyloe were also photographers.

I have several photos from the Brookings area and quite a few were taken by the Oyloes. The inscriptions I have seen all say "Brookings, SD" or "Brookings, S. Dak" though.

~Penny
Brookings,SD

I am trying to find out more information on Olaus Larsen Udseth b.1859. I have him in the 1880 Census in the Brookings Territory in South Dakota. His parents were Lars Hansen Udseth born 1829 in Norway and Oline Marie Olsdtr. Tysko b. 1834 in Norway. I was wondering if someone might be able to help me locate him and his family in the Census Records. I don't have a subscription right now so I cannot view the records. So if someone could attach the records to your reply. Thanks so much.

Hi Rebecca

Do you happen to have any memories of Myers family in
Elkton? I am a Myers- Charles and Amelia were my great grandparents. My grandmother was Ida Stagelman Myers. She was a school teacher- was teacher at Stagelman school. Lots of Myers still around. I saw that Lynch is near Oppelt on your link. Oppelt was somehow married into Myers.

Go to this link
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sdbrooki/maps1897/alton.ht...
Section 26 is the Mary Lynch place and is close the where the McKain store was located. I grew up straight north of the McKain store and remember seeing it vacant and still standing when I rode the bus to Elkton to go to school. There was a blacksmith place a few more miles down the road from the McKain store. My dad told me about it.
No, there were not any of your folks mentioned that I could find.
Good luck.
Rebecca

I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner, Linda. My best guess on the timeframe is 1907 to 1928. Mom was born in August 1915. I have a picture of her with her dog when she was about five years old. There is a barn, farmhouse and some outbuildings in the distance. Grandma's maiden name was Maxwell but I don't think any of her family lived in Elkton. She lived in central Iowa before moving to South Dakota. Her mother, Angeline, died in Aurora in 1906 but it is my understanding that she was just visiting. She and two of the children contracted scarlet fever. The children lived. I have a picture of Grandma and Grandpa taken in August 1925. On the back it says they were living on the Lynch place. Grandpa was a blacksmith. My aunt told me they were very poor and lived above the blacksmith shop. Mom said once that they lived on a farm near the McKain train stop. I do not know if it was the same place. Grandma and Grandpa are buried in the Aurora Cemetery.

Hello

I looked for the Carmans but no luck finding them in the book. The book has the folks buried in the cemeteries there but no listing for the Carmans. Let me know approx what year. I will keep looking. The book has no index of names. i can ask my family still in Elkton if they know the name. It is a real pretty town and the people are very nice. Sometimes wish I lived closer. Not in the winter, though.

I have this book. Bought it when we were visiting Elkton last year. It is wonderful. My family was Myers- early homesteaders there. And still there to this day.
