I am not related. I grabbed a few items as I was researching my family that perhaps will be useful to others.

The following item appeared in the Emmons County Record on 3 Jun 1904, page 4 column 3:

A man named Matt Danberger was killed last Tuesday between Herreid and Mound City. His team ran away with him, throwing him out and injuring him so badly that he died.

So there is a chance that your Reich family is connected to the Reich family I'm looking into for my cousin. (I'm not a Reich descendant, but my aunt married a Reich, and they were my godparents.)

I'm going to share what you've written with my cousin. I think she can access the message boards without a membership. I may be contacting you again. Thanks!

That, unfortunately, is part of the mystery. The sister's name has been lost to time. The closest I've been able to get is that she apparently married a Weisenberger--or that's the name the family THINKS it was.I did learn that she had the children with her, and they all became ill but survived. Only Jakobina died.

One other thing I know is that Jakobina's husband was awful. He tried to have her committed to the state hospital in North Dakota, but the judge told him the he was the one who needed to be committed.

Jacobina's surname may have been spelled Welz.

Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kvernes.

Do you have access to Ancestry?

Jacobina came to the U.S. in about 1908, and immediately married Albert Reich. They lived over in Mercer and Oliver County, ND. But in 1918, Jacobina went to Pollock, SD, to visit her sister. While she was there, she succumbed to the flu and died 23 Nov 1918, according to records at Golgotha Lutheran Church. But for some reason, she is reported to have been buried in Emmons County, ND. So far, no one has been able to find her grave in either place. Maybe a funeral home in the area has some old records???

Anyway, her sister is an enigma, but mainly because we can't be sure about her married name. It starts with a "W". Could be Weisenbach, Weissenburger, Weisgerber, or any variation thereof.

We are wanting to find her family of origin, her arrival record (or, departure), her grave for sure, and any information related to her time in Pollock.

Hi Shirley,
Unfortunately, I cannot help you with your obit request, but I have a question for you! I have a Dorothy aka Dora Beck who marred a man by the name of Paul Henry Bruhn, Dora and Paul had 4 children, Amelia, Henry, Paul and Edwin. All 4 children as far as I know were born in Hillsview, McPherson County, South Dakota.
Not sure if Paul Bruhn died or if he and Dora got Divorced, but she married for a second time to Charles A. Alther, they lived in Wells, North Dakota for a short time, P(1900 Census), then they moved to Minneapolis, I trace them up to 1930 in Minneapolis, then lose them.
I was wondering if Dorothy aka Dora Beck might be a person that might interest you?
I am trying to find out where Charles and Dora are buried and when they died?
There marriage was the second for both of them, Charles had been married to Sophia Orth but they divorced!
If any of this is of interest to you, I can be contacted at: k79lawrence@gmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you!

Keith Lawrence

Go under this link and search for Carman. You will find these articles.

http://odessa3.org/collections/towns/link/selby50.txt

Selby SD, Golden Anniversary, 1900-1950 (R. Ehrich)

MR. HENRY CARMAN

Henry Carman was born in Canada on July 11, 1824. At about twelve years of age, he moved with his parents to near Rockford, Illinois, where he spent the balance of his boyhood days. In the year 1846 he took a squatters claim
in Iowa near what is now Strawberry Point, and was one of those who named that town. In the fall of 1847 he caught the "gold fever" and sold his claim for $800 and started for the gold fields of California by the southern route. After going through a siege of yellow fever, he took the
Fremont trail, reaching the gold coast in the spring of 1849, barefoot and without money. As soon as he was able he went into the mines where he made money quite easily for a while. After eight years he returned to Illinois to visit his parents and became acquainted with Miss Alice Holcom and in January, 1857, they were married and soon afterwards moved to Floyd county,Iowa, where they lived for about thirty years. Mr. and Mrs. Carman were blessed with eight children: Roman; Marcellus, who lives in Hillsboro, Oregon; Silas; Alice Belle; Sada, who was Mrs. Frank Skinner; Nella May,who was Mrs. George Skinner; Denslay, whose widow is Mrs. Jessie Carman and who lives six miles north and five miles west of Selby at the present time; and Charles.

MR. AND MRS. HENRY CARMAN

In the spring of 1886, Mr. and Mrs. Carman followed their three eldest sons to Walworth county, South Dakota, where he homesteaded the NW 1/4 of section 6-124-77. They lived in Walworth county until they built a new frame house just across the road from the claim in Campbell county and here
they resided until the time of his death, which occurred in 1905. Charles Carman took over the farm and resided on it and continued to improve it until his death in 1936. A short time afterward, the Charles Carman family moved to Seattle, Washington, where they now reside. However, they still own the farm and maintain it in such a manner that it is a credit to the community.

Henry Carman and wife were truly pioneers of four states. In Illinois in the 1840's, which at that time was a long distance to the west, in the western half of Iowa which was almost a wilderness in 1846, and the Fremont trail and California were rough and wild in '49 and starting in Walworth county in 1886 was surely pioneering.

There is one listing on Denslay also.

MR. DENSLAY L. CARMAN

Denslay L. Carman was born in Floyd county, Iowa, June 9, 1872. He came with his parents and family to South Dakota in 1886, settling on the farm on the county line, NW 1/4 of section 6-124-77, now owned by Mrs. Charles R. Carman. When he became of age in 1893, he homesteaded on the SE 1/4 of
6-124-77. In the year 1905 he was united in marriage with Jessie E.Hoffman, who was also a member of one of the pioneer families of the county, and they began housekeeping in a sod house which he had built on the claim. In 1906, a small frame house was built, where they lived and raised their three children, Raymond, Edwin and Lucille. In 1929 a new modern house was built. The original homestead was gradually added to until it now consists of 720 acres. Mr. Carman passed away suddenly on August 24,1934. In 1928, the oldest son, Raymond, was married to Irene Welton of Selby, and they occupied the small house from 1929 until 1937 when they moved to another place and Edwin took over the operation of the home farm. Raymond later bought the Hans Engebretson farm and still later purchased land in Section 5, Township 122, Range 76, where he has built up a modern
farmstead. The house was sold off the Engebretson place and moved to Selby and is now the property of L. James Moell and occupied by the Milo Swift family. The other buildings were either torn down or moved to the new place and in 1945, one of the fine new modern farm homes of the county was built.

Lucille has taught rural and city schools in Walworth and Campbell counties and is now married to Harry Stowell and resides in Mobridge.

Edwin and his mother operate the home farm.

Denslay L. Carman was a skillful farmer and stock raiser. In the days before the drought it was well worth a trip out there to see his crops, his garden and the wonderful fruit and his trees. His sons, too, are high class farmers, following in the footsteps of their pioneer parents and
grandparents in doing their full part in continuing the development of the land on which the family long ago pitched its tent and which all came to love so well. The two Carman farms are among the many very good ones in
Walworth county.

There is another book with more write ups in it. This is the Selby SD, Centennial, 1900-2000 (R. Ehrich)

http://odessa3.org/collections/towns/link/selby00.txt

Hi Nan,

I do not believe that is the family. This Rosina did not have any children. They had been married for 6 years and they are listed as having 0 children. Do you have access to census records? If you do, check Jordan, Montana for 1920 and you will see them listed there. 1930 they are in Montana too. I need to look them up again to tell you exactly where they are. I don't think that is your family.

I am not related just trying to help. I have attached Philip's obit. It ran in the Greeley Daily Tribune, Greeley, Colorado July 23, 1963. If you need me to send it directly, you will have to send me an email address.

I have not had any luck yet with finding them in 1910. Did they marry in Russia?

Faith

IF you are able to find where the kids were born, you may have a chance at finding their birth information through church records. Possibly the court house but they did not always record the births at this time.

What I am wondering is...where did Philip and Regina marry? I know the boys were born in SD and Frieda was born in Nebraska. So either South Dakota or Nebraska? I am trying to narrow down where Philip and the boys may have lived in 1910.

Also, you seem to know that his first wife was Rosina. Was this passed on down or did you find documentation?

One more question. You said "the possible sons". What does that mean? These boys did belong to Philip. Did you find Philip Srs. obit? I can send it if not.

Thanks.

No, I have not ordered their death certificates-- the possible sons. Also have not gotten birth certificates. Phillip the father then married Regina Bohlaender after first wife died. She died in 1943. (second wife).

I have not found Rosina's death or kids births. I have the marriage of Regina Bohlander and PHilip Kuntz.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.
nan

Hi Nancy,

I really think that the Philip and Rosina that lived in Campbell County in the 1910 census are the ones living in Montana in 1920 and 1930.

The family you are looking for (which you probably already know)look like they are living...
1920: Scottsbluff Ward 1, Scotts Bluff, Nebraska
1930: Township 2, Pennington, South Dakota

I am looking in the 1910 census but have not been able to find them either. I will keep looking to see if I have any luck. Do you know if Philip and his second wife married in Nebraska?

Did you order Philip and Peter's death records to see if their mother is listed on there?

This couple may have had the following:
Peter Kuntz born 27 Dec 1908
Philip J. Kuntz born 1 Oct 1909

I have no proof that Rosina and Philip Kuntz are the parents, but one Philip Kuntz from Russia was the father of the above two boys.
Thanks, nancy
PS. Yes, I don't know where the boys were during census.

Hi,

Can you post more info? Who the boys are and their birth dates? Where is Philip in 1920? In 1910 this couple you mentioned had been married for six years and not had any children.

If you can provide more information possibly we can help you.

Thanks.

You're welcome.

Roth is my married name, and I don't know of any Ruth in his line, which came from the vicinity of Trier, Germany, in 1863, to Wisconsin, Iowa, and then South Dakota. Mathias ROTH & Susanna [ZEIMET] brought sons John, Michael, & Nicholas.

Marilyn, thank you so much for this information. Sorry that I am late acknowledging it, but I did not get a notice that you had responded to my inquiry. It will be very helpful. There is a Ruth Roth, living in California in 1974 who was a part of the Carman family. Would she be related to you? Thanks again.
