I can stop at the Beresford Library in July and see if I can find this obituary. The Carlsons and the Bergrens have obituaries in "History of the Swedes Who Settled in Clay County, South Dakota and Their Biographies" by August Peterson (1947). It is ironic that I have recently been in contact with Carlson descendants in California. Ron Johnson, Dalesburg Scandinavian Association (wwwdotdalesburgdotorg)

Ruby Mildred Bergren died on March 20, 1915 in rural Clay County, SD, near Beresford. She was the daughter of Olof Albert Bergren and Essie Carlson Bergren. I recall reading her obituary in my grandmothers collection of family items, but it was lost. The obituary was published in the Beresford paper (to the best of my recollection.) Is there anyone who could look this up for me? It would be greatly appreciated!

Hi again - Beth or other helpers. I have found a death sertificate for Anna Hansen, born 21.3.1893 an dead in wakonda april 1969. I don't know if it is Anna Christine Skramstad, but the date of birth is the same. I have also found a grave stone in Union Cemetery, Wakonda, which says: Our mother, Anna C Hansen, 1893 - 1969. Is it possible to find out more about her?
Sissel

Hi Beth! The job you have done for me is really fantastic and I am so thankful. It was great that you found Gustav. A lot of Norwegians chenged their surnames when thei settled in US, and then it is more difficult for us to find them. Perhaps used Gustav the name "Holm" because hos grandfather lived on a farm called "Holme". Gustav was a cousin of my husbands grandfather. Now I have information about the whole family, except of Anna. It is right that Bertha got five children. Marie, Gustav, Christian (died before 1900) Anna Kristine, and then Chris together with her new husband. Berthas first husband - Andreas, died a couple of months before Annas birth. I still hope that there can be some information about Anna. If you are finding some more obituaries about the family, I would be happy. And now a question: did you sent me three or four messages last day? I got three messages, and the fourth was deleted for some reason. Hope to hear from you again :)
Sissel

Yes! I was correct in thinking that Gustav HOLM was Bertha's son Gustav SKRAMSTAD.

A volunteer looked up information in the Wakonda Centennial book and found information:

The Union Cemetery in Wakonda, Clay County, includes the following burials in Lot #32. The date is date of death:

ERICKSEN, Erick 1930
ERICKSEN, Nathaniel 1966

HOLM, Gustave May 17, 1919

LARSEN, Lars 1937
LARSEN, Marie S. 1971

STOCKLAND, Bertha 1955
STOCKLAND, Chris 1921

Please note there may be others buried in the same Lot.

I send messages to two volunteers who own Wakonda history books.
I checked Canadian records for Gustav but did not find him.

The 1910 census for Berthe / Bertha and her new husband stated she had given birth to five children and had four still living. She had one child with Chris Stockland; that means that Anna and / or Gustav was still living in 1910. If both of them had died, it would have said she had given birth to five children with only three still living.

I checked spelling variations for Skramstad / Scramstead / Scramstad and etc.

Anna would have been only 9 or 10 years old when Bertha remarried. It is possible she took the last name of Stockland. I searched for her using that name and did not find anything.

btw: Marie stated on her ship list form that her brother paid for her ticket: that must have been Gustav, unless there was yet another son still living in Norway.

Beth

Thank you so much for all the information you have given me. It was very intersting. And - in fact, that daughter Marie was unknown for me. You wondered why Berthas emigration was payed by her uncle and not by her son. I think that her uncle was better situated than her son, remember that he was a very young boy. I know that one of Berthas brothers lived in Canada, and I have thought about the possibility that Gustav went to him. Because of my membership in ancestry.com, I can not get any information about Canada. I still wonder what happened to Gustav and Anna. Maria was another sister. Anna had a second name - Christine. So I can still hope for some help with this family
Sissel

I have looked for them a lot of places, but not found them later. Gustav arrived US in 1901, Berthe and Anna in 1903. Their emigration was payed by Julius Løkke, also a Norwegian in Wakonda.
Can someone help me to find out what happened to them?
"My" Gustav is not identic with Gustav Evensen Skramstad, married to Laila
Sissel Johnsen, Norway

I just sent you an email to your gmail account but thought I would post something here for other readers to see. My name is Margaret Nordstrom and I am the granddaughter of Charles A and Martha Nordstrom. Fay and Vivian were my aunts who I knew well. The private picture of a man is my father, Clifford Lamont Nordstrom. I knew my grandmother, Martha but never met my grandfather. I was told he left his family when my father young. The last time I saw his name with his family was in 1920 when my father was 9 years old. Are we related?

I'm not sure if you are still searching for this or not? I found this site here that I think should give you some information: http://frielfoto.com/genealogy/p294.htm#i13534. I don't know much on Montague but I believe that Alice was actually Alice Hampton first and then she married Lorenzo Baker. When he died she married David Montegue and I think divorced not to long after. I don't have a Gann Valley history book but I know there is some stuff in there about it. One of Lorenzo and Alice's kids was my great grandfather. If you have more info on this I would be interested to hear about it. stmoci@hotmail.com

Jack,

Did you receive the invitation I sent to view my family tree on ancestry.com? That should be the easiest way to see the information that I have on James O'Connor and this branch of my family tree. I would love to know anything you can tell me about your great grandma Catharine and her family also if you know anything more about her father Michael and his wife (I don't know who his wife is). But you can see what I have on my ancestry family tree for each person. I have all of the different attachments, documents and photos that I have on the tree. I would love to have a picture of your grandma Catharine if you have one. So far I don't have a picture of James himself. I am still scouring history books in hopes of finding one and trying to network with other O'Connor relatives in hopes of tracking one down. If you want to email me directly me email address is eddelweisse@hotmail.com

Let me know if you didn't get the invitation to the tree and I will send it again.

Sincereley,

Danna

Hello Danna,
Yes, your g-g-g-grandfather James O'Connor is the brother of my g-g-grandmother Catharine (O'Connor) Hanley. She too was born in County Kerry (d.o.b. 04/22/1832). I have a copy of a Civil War Widow Benefit verification form that James completed on behalf of Catharine in Clay County, S.D. in 1909. His age at that time was just shy of 80. At that time he listed his home as Burbank, S.D. I would really like to share information. I have quite a bit of information and a photo or two for Catharine, and information on their time in Iowa.

Thanks,
Jack Thueson
Stillwater, MN
Hi there, I was just doing some research on my family tree and came across a couple of your inquiries for information on James O'Connor. If we are talking about the same James O'Connor he is my 3rd Great-Grandfather. I would love to compare notes with you. I do have a great deal of information about him and his extended family but what I don't have is information on his siblings. Here is a brief bit on his vital info just to make sure we are talking about the same person:

James O'Connor
b. Nov. 17, 1829 in County Kerry, Ireland to Michael O'Connor (I do not have his mother's name).
m. Nora Sheehan in 1850, they had 8 children that I know of; Margaret, Michael, John, Catherine, Ellen, James Vincent, Lucy, & Patrick T.
d. Jul. 31, 1910 in Burbank, Union County, South Dakota, USA
buried. Aug. 1910 in Saint Mary Cemetery, Union County, South Dakota, Plot: Block 2, lot 6, grave 3

If this sounds like the same person let me know and I will be happy to give you any information that I have. I am going to go ahead and send you an invitation to view my tree on ancestry.

Thank you again,

Danna ("eddelweisse" on ancestry.com)

Patrick L Kurth died June 1985 and the SSN database says last residence at Vermillion. Of course that does not mean that he died there.

I am hoping to find an obit for him to complete a project I am working on.

Thanks
Mary

my Grandparent's farm was built on the old town of Lodi, as children we spent our summers there. We found some of the old foundations of some of the buildings that once stood there. Our Mother was born in the old Post Office building that was converted to a house. We always heard the story of the railroad that was to come through the town but it actually was changed to the town of Wakonda. After that happened the town of Lodi vanished.

Ruth
