Armour Hotel) was unpretentious though gaudily wallpapered."

I will contact you via Ancestry.com messenger service so I can share what I find.

Beth

Was the name of the hotel "Armour House" at that time?

There was a recent bed-and-breakfast named the Armour House, and it had been my grandfather's childhood home. His name, though, was Dean Scholes.

I own several history books from Douglas County and will search through them for info on the hotel or your family.

Beth
(I don't live in South Dakota)

I am trying to find a history of the Armour House hotel, which was supposedly the first hotel in Armour, South Dakota. This hotel was run by my 2nd great grandparents, Zenophile and Eliza Lanctot, from about 1900 to 1916.

I have not been able to locate any information about this hotel ... no mention in county histories that I have found, no photographs, etc.

If anyone has information or a photograph of the hotel, I would appreciate anything you can offer. Thanks in advance!

My 2nd great grandfather, Joseph Zenophile Lanctot, died on 20 Jul 1913 in Armour (Douglas Co.), South Dakota. He was born on 15 Jan 1860 or 1861.

Amelia SANCREN {sic} had eight living children in 1900. Only four were with the parents, so there must have been four others, probably all born in South Dakota because of the land record of 1868. Two of the others were probably Alex & Annie, see below.

Find a Grave has in Elk Point Cem., Union Co., SD, Alexander P. LANCRAIN (13 July 1825 (sic 1829?), Paris, France - 23 July 1913, Elk Point); wife Amelia LADUE (24 Je. 1851 - 11 Dec. 1915), parents of Anna Rosalie [LANCRAIN] GOSS (1874 - 1936) &
Charles Prudent LANCRAIN (12 Jan. 1889 - 6 Feb. 1935, Sioux City, Woodbury, IA).

In Elk Pt. Twp., 1900, there were William GOSS, b. Feb. 1875, SD IL IL; m. 5 years. Wf. Annie E., b. Mar. 1874, SD France Canada. Another census has Annie b. SD, father b. France, mother b. Ohio!

Find a Grave has in ZCBJ Cem., Wagner, Chas. Mix Co., SD, James LANCRAIN (7 Je. 1931, Springfield, Bon Homme Co., SD - 10 Aug. 2007, Pierre, Hughes Co., SD) son of Mercy CRANE & William LANCRAIN. James LANCRAIN m. 1973, Lake Andes, SD, Ann GULLICKSON. He was survived by dau. Sandra BURSTON, Sioux Falls, SD, & nieces Brenda ROMMAN & Ann McADAMS.

Pilot.FamilySearch.org, Census of 1900, Elk Point Twp., Union Co., SD, indexed SANCREN:
Alexander, b. July 1829, he & parents b. France, imm. 1848, married 29 y.
Wf. Amelia, b. Je. 1849, MO, parents b. Canada; had 11 ch., 8 living, b. SD
Maggie, Je. 1882; JoSaphine, Dec. 1884; Charles, Jan. 1889
Married dau. Louisa ROSENBURG, b. Jan. 1880, no ch.

Pilot.FamilySearch.org also has cards of the 1925 Census. William LANCRAIN, 22, SD SD ID, Wagner, SD. There were also in 1925, Nellie, 48, ID IN WI, married 1910, of Geddes, SD; Alex LANCRIN, no county shown, 56, b. SD, parents b. France, divorced, maiden name of wf. SHUCK.

In 1910, Charles Mix Co., Alec LANKRIN, 38, with Nellie S., 35.

SD Births: Josephine, b. 19 Dec. 1885, Clay Co., d/o Amilia LADEAU & Alezander LANCRAIN.

BLM Land Patents, Clay Co., SD: Alexander LANERIN {sic}, 4 May 1868, Twp. 91 N., R 51 W., parts of Sec. 5; Twp. 92 N., 51 W., part of Sec. 32.

It looks as if William could have been grandson of the first Alexander LANCRAIN, You could try to get William's death certificate from the Register of Deeds of Douglas County to see whether (as it should) it names William's parents. Death certificates began mid-1905 in South Dakota.

--not my family

Genweb site doesn't have a volunteer, then the other place to try would be the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website to see if there is someone listed for Douglas County who can do cemetery look-ups.

Good luck.
Are you familiar with the US genweb project? Each county in the country has a volunteer who gathers and posts information for their area.

I am a lookup volunteer for the Douglas County, SD, genweb site, and I don't find any information at all for HAUF or KRIEGER families in early books and records.

I DO find, however, information in the Hutchinson County, SD, genweb site. The cemetery index page, for example, lists two burials for HAUF, two for KRIEGER, and a couple for variations of the Krieger spelling. It appears the Grace Hill cemetery in Tripp township may be where you will find your family.

Here is the link to the Hutchinson County genweb site, where you can search for more information:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~sdhutchi/

Beth

I am looking for any information about a Krieger family in the Tripp-Delmont area. He was a pastor in either a Reformed or Lutheran Church, I believe. I do not find him on census reports in Hutchinson or Douglas Counties.
A daughter married Karl Hauf, they had three daughters. His wife and two daughters died, The daughter that survived was named Anna, born in 1889. Karl married Teresa Hildebrand. The 1900 census shows Karl and Teresa were married 8 years. They later moved to Nebraska, then went to Tripp County, SD.
Anna Hauf Rash was my late husband's grandmother. I would like to find where they lived so I can take photos of their tombstones and the church the next time I am in the area.

A long-ago moment was called up when my late grandfather Harry Huizenga happened to mention he and another relaqtion went to Corsica for a reason unknown. I think maybe he did some work there or just went to see some person or could possibly have been some hauling or moving, as he did possess a stake-bed truck in those days.
Well, it caught my eye so perhaps this may offer a sense for some small perspective or relatativity to a Chicago-based branch of the Huizenga family.
All Good Wishes,
Leslie Huizenga
George - born in Uithuizen, Groningen, on May 11, 1860. His parent- Jan Tjaarts Huizinga/Huizenga and Henderijke van den Boer along with his siblings immigrated from the NL in 1886. They lived in Spring Lake, Michigan. George married Florence Hughes in Spring Lake and they and their family moved to South Dakota sometime around 1910. We have a letter from Florence following George's death in 1934 listing the children's names. Thanks for your help, Will

Hello Anthony,

Here is a link to the South Dakota State Historical Society newspaper research form. Staff can look up information for you from archived newspapers for a fee.

https://www.sdhistory.org/arc/anewform2.htm

I routinely order microfilmed newspapers from the Historical Society via interlibrary loan, and have access to several months of newspapers on one roll of film. Your local librarian needs to make the request for the film, which you need to read via microfiche reader at your library. Here is a link to their available newspapers.

http://www.sdhistory.org/arc/newspaper/default.asp

Beth

George was born in the Netherlands, came to Michigan with his family in the late 1860's, he died in Armour in May of 1934. He ran a Meat Market there from 1920 til his passing. It appears that after George died the family moved to Deerfield. Any information would be helpful.

My Grandmother came from Putzig, Posen, Germany with her family (Storbeck) in 1901. Her father, Ludwig Storbeck indicated on the ship record that they were going to join an uncle, Gottlieb (Clapp) Klatt at Armour, SD. My Grandmother then worked for the Klatt family in Douglas County, South Dakota, until her marriage, which took place in Douglas County.

I would like to contact a Klatt descendant to learn if the Klatt's & Storbeck' were connected by blood, or if they were friends. They were from the same area of Germany (now Poland). We believe the Klatt's paid the passage to this country for the family and that my Grandmother worked off that passage. She always referred to "Mrs. Klatt" as being very good to her during those years.

A BLM land record indicates that a Gottlieb Klatt purchased land on July 14, 1888 in Douglas County, South Dakota.

Thank you for information you may have.

Lorraine Holliday
mlholliday@gwtc.net

I'm looking for information on Frank A. WARREN and Alice A. HARRISON in Douglas County. Frank was one of the early settlers in southeast area of Douglas County (around Delmont). He and Alice were married in 1882 in Hutchinson County. They had four sons - Oliver (Bert), Harlie, Carl E., Lloyd Lynn, and Elry Clfford. The family homsteaded in Choteau Creek Township in Charles Mix County between 1896 and 1901 but moved to Delmont by 1910. As near as I can tell, Frank and Alice remained in Delmont until their deaths (1935 and 1942). They are buried in the Delmont City Cemetery.

I'm looking for any information about them, possible leads to information, or if someone is willing to look up information, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I read in "Douglas County, The Little Giant" by Robert F. Karolevitz (published 1983 by the Douglas County Historical Society) on page 61, that there was a census taken in 1885. I've seen 1885 census information for other counties (Beadle, Butte, Charles Mix, Edmunds, Fall River, Faulk, Hand, Hanson, Hutchinson, Hyde, Lake, Lincoln, Marshall, McPherson, Moody, Roberts, Sanborn, Spink, Stanley and Turner) but not Douglas County.

Does a census for Douglas County in 1885 exist? If so, where is it archived and how could I get information from it? I have direct ancestors (Frank A. WARREN and Alice HARRISON) that t I believe lived in Douglas County in 1885.

I am looking for information on the Nick Peterson family listed in the 1910 census, in Clark Township. Listed is his wife, Mary G. (Gertrude Marie Jensen), and his children, Nels, Soren, Julia, Carl, Eltha (Altha), John Jim and Annie. He also had a son in Oct of 1910 named Jake or Jacob. Any help on this line would hugely appreciated!

Frank and Alice had moved to Minnesota by 1930. Alice died in Minnesota in 1942 and was buried in Delmont. Frank died in 1935. I am seeking the exact date and location of his death. I have not been able to locate him in Ancestry's South Dakota and Minnesota death indices.

Is there an address where I could write for more information?

In the Douglas County archive, Mrs. Allen is listed as 84 years old. Frank WARREN's mother would have been about 95 in 1910 but there could be a margin of error in the record.

Alice WARREN died in Ortonville, Big Stone, Minnesota. I don't know exactly when or where Frank died. I haven't been able to locate him in either the South Dakota or Minnesota death indexes on Ancestry.

I'm not sure if there is any relationship between Douglas and Frank WARREN. The proximity of their graves may only be a coincidence.
