I visited this place back in the 1990's and have researched the old Disabled & Volunteer Soldier's Homes that have since been closed and demolished. The "Home" is deserted now and was a circular, brick, 2 story structure, with total surround porch on both floors. Except for support offices, the entire building consisted of dormitories. It is located next door to the current VA Hospital. It was neither a prison or a hospital, but dormitories consisting of several man "Squad Rooms". Hot Springs is also the current home of he SD Veterans Home which ios SD State Operated. All Civil War Veterans federally funded "Homes" were authorized from about 1865 through 1930. There are currently no federally funded "Veterans Homes" and the only true veterans homes is "The Armed Forces Retirement Home" in both Washington, DC and Gulfport, MS. I am an Independent Living Resident of the AFRH and have been since 2008.
