Pederson/Peterson Family in Hamlin County

Looking for more info on the Isaac Pederson/Peterson family in Hamlin Co. They are listed in the 1900 census for Hamlin Co (ED 158 Cleveland & Norden Twps), Isaac, wife Ingeborg, 2 sons Peter & Gustav and daughter Clara. Isaac appears to have died in Jun 1901 and am wondering what may have happened to the family. I believe that Isaac is a distant cousin who was born in Sel, Oppland, Norway and emigrated in 1881 to Tracy, MN with 2 of his cousins and then moved to Hamlin Co. around 1890 as another cousin was living there (Garfield Twp). Any info or leads to this family would be appreciated!

Doug Wangen (dougcory@cableone.net)

I am searching for information about a young girl named Vida who died abt 1916 in child-birth in Hamlin County, SD. She apparently ran away from home when she found out she was pregnant. She stayed with a family named Rommeriem, who raised her son. The family put an article in the newspaper about her and contact info for the Rommeriem family, but no one ever came forward. Any information would be appreciated.

So glad to have connected with you! This is great! I have photos of Ben, his brother Barney, Hattie, Florence, and their Father Fred, and their mother Hilgien. Also have many photos and information of decendents.

My understanding is there were two children that died in infancy, one of which must have been Harm and Tobias as you outlined.

With the new information you sent, I was able to find a 1940 censis (I think you reference it below) on Ancestry.com which solved a mystery I have been trying to figure out. Hilgien is also known as Helen. Now I know where my grandmother got her name (Helen)!

Ben Fred Hector was my great grandfather and was married to Jennie Lamfers. Their children were Ben, Jr., Helen, and Gladys.

Looking forward to sharing additional info. You may send info to brian.werk@live.com too.

Hello Brian
Nice to hear from you. My Hector familyline goes back to 1750 and I have information about a Ben en Hilgien Hector- Metting.

Hillechien (Hilgien) Metting married Feiko Hector on March 20 1886 in Nieuw (New) Beerta, province Groningen in the Netherlands. They emigrated in 1915 to the USA. I assume the name Feiko has changed into Fred.

Hillechien (Hilgien) Metting was born on November 28 1861 in Bellingwolde (province Groningen in the Netherlands). Her parents were Berend Metting and Harmke Tammes.

Feiko (Fred) Hector was born on November 4 1860 in Nieuw (New) Beerta ((province Groningen in the Netherlands). His parents were: Benedictus Hector (1828 - 1888) and Frouwke Graver (1829 - 1871)

Feiko (Fred?) and Hillechien had 7 children:
Beno Hector (1886 - ??) lived in the USA in 1940. I assume his name has changed into Barry or Barny
Berend Hector (1890 - 1990) His name has changed into Ben
Frouwke Hector (1893 - 1989) Her name has changed into Florence
Harm Hector (1896 - 1896)
Harmke Hector (1897 - 1987) Her name has changed into Hattie
Tobias Hector (1900 - 1900)
Feiko Hector (1905 - ??) His has name changed into Fred jr.

I have more information and I will sent it to you later

Henk Jan Hector

I am not related. But I may be able to add something that will help. I have posted quite a few gravestone photos on www.southdakotagravestones.org. However, an acquaintance has posted photos I think you that would interest you, from the Bakke Cem at Estelline. Christian(Carl), Thea, & Gilbert(mistakenly called Albert A) Eggeseth. Albert's stone is military and that stone reads "Egersett".
That being said, you may not be aware that the 1940 census is now free online from a couple websites, but I would suggest to look on www.ancestry.com. In 1940, there was Blythe(a widow) with her 3 children. It is possible Blythe was married to Gilbert, but more likely to Albert, who was much closer to her own age.
Finally, there is an A A Egersett listed in WhitePages.com in Watertown. It is possible he is the Arly Eggeseth from the 1940 census.
Good luck.....Bill Feller

My husband is also descended from Josephine and Knute Ramsey (they are his grandparents) as you probably know by now. I am slow with my research on this line. Getting carried away with my line involves most of my time. I am so sorry that it has been this long. Karen

Just looked at your note, sorry. The thing I remember my dad saying that Ernst (my grandfather) had 2-3 brothers. My dad remembered a "Uncle Louie, Joe,and a Frank. Other than my Grandfather was supposedly a twin and her name was Bertha, Sorry, I don't have too much. One other thing there used to be an old black and white photograph of my Grandmother and younger (50's) and she was with some other people(relatives) on a large lake/river with hills like in Wisconsin. Grandfather had visited "relative" in Wisconsin, not far from the Minnesota border. Again, is seems that atleast one of these men were Ernsts brother.
Good luck.

John,

I haven't had any problems or difficulties in dealing with any genealogy sites. So I can't really give you any advice on how to (or not to) proceed to protect yourself and your computer.
I was in Hamlin County this past August and discovered when I went to the Records Office that you are not allowed to look at the Birth/Death records unless you are a registered genealogist with the State of South Dakota. Since I didn't know this prior to getting to the Records Office, I was unable to look at any of the death certificates of our Schieffelbein/Schlender relatives. I had hoped the death certificates might state who their parents were. It was very, very disappointing. I was able to go out to the cemetery where many of our relatives are buried. It took me a while to figure out that the writing on some of the older stones was in German! I did get a photo of Wilhemine Schieffelbein's headstone. I believe that Wilhemine is Louise, Earnest, Bertha, William and Frank's mother.

One interesting note I did find in the Library in Hamlin County. There is another family of Schieffeblein's who moved to Hamlin around 1887. I found a bio on them and they are not our immediate family. Possibly a relative - but if so, I'm not able to tie them together. According to the bio, this other Schieffelbien family had lived in Wisconsin for a number of years before making the decision to move to South Dakota.

I have not seen the info on Schivelbein or Schivelbein castle. I haven't done much work on the family outside of the US.

Can you refresh my memory on how we might be related? My great-great grandfather was William Schieffelbein.

Good to hear from you. There don't seem to be many who are researching the Schieffelbein family!

Marla

Hello Marla; Its been a long time, however, I am now more retired so am interested in working on the Schieffelbein geneology.
I have some trepitation about giving out info. and opening up our computer for some sort of hacking. So-- in your dealing with "rootsweb" have you experienced any trouble along these lines? If so, what was the experience and how should I be careful?
I did find in my email already a listing from you(?)giving the names of some Schieffelbeins in the Hamlin Co. area.
We had visited some other relatives in that area years ago when my dad was still living. While in the area we went to the two cemeteries around Bryant. At the one there was a very weathered and older looking tombstone. On it we did a rubbing the best we could. The last name was Schieffelbein however, the first name was "Wilhemine".My dad at the time did not remember who this was.I will try to find the photo and rubbing and get the exact date.
I have already found the town in Germany/Pomerainia named Schivelbein a part of Brandenburg, Germany. I assume you have already found this stuff out. I have even a picture from an old photo that was on the web that shows what is left of the Castle Schivelbein. I also found a picture off an old post card that shows a winter type scene in the town of Schivelbein. If I find any reference to Schlender I will let you know if you wish even though you probally will already have it.
Again, some trepitation here,as to someone getting into our computer and hacking other private information. I am open to any advice you can give. Again, our paths cross. I hope it can be helpful to both.
Sincerely John Schieffelbein

Bill,
I want to thank you for the info. I have searched high and low for data on Timothy but was unable to locate anything that I could say was definitely his info. The only thing my grandmother ever said about Timothy is that he left home one day to go to town and never heard from him again. To the date of her death, she never knew where he went or what happened to him. As a consequence of his suspicious disappearance no one ever spoke of him.

I do not believe that it is necessary for me to have the sources for this info, but I am curious as to how confident you are of this data. Do you believe that there are some assumptions in this record or is it from fairly reliable sources?
Again, thanks for the help.
Erwin Gard, great-grandson of Timothy and Olive Ryan
Here's what I have:

Timothy Ryan, born in New York State about 1857, son of Timothy Ryan (born ca 1800-1808 in Ireland) and Lovina (Viana) Sharp (born ca 1818 in New York State). This couple had four children:

--Henry Philander Ryan (1852-1937) m Frances (Fanny) Dilcox
--Laura H. Ryan (1856-1914) m Almond H. Morrill
--Timothy Ryan (c1857-??) m Olive L. Morrill
--Lucy A [or Eliza??] Ryan (c1859-??)

Before his marriage to Viana Sharp, it appears that Timothy Ryan (Sr.) had been married to Jennie Agan (aka Jane Egan), and had five older children, for whom some dates are not certain:

--John Ryan (1832-1909) m Margaret McCarty
--James Ryan (c1830s-1892) m Mary Carbino
--Robert Ryan (1844-??)
--Julia Ryan (1844-1908) m -- Thayer
--William Ryan (??-??)

The second wife of John Ryan was Hulda Sharp, sister of Viana.

Viana was the daughter of John Sharp (c1790-bef 1840) and Nancy Henion (c1790-bef 1840).

John Sharp was the son of Philip Sharp (1752-aft 1820), an early settler of Massena, St. Lawrence County, New York. Nancy Henion apparently was the daughter of Peter Henion (c1749-??) and Elizabeth Sharp (c1754-??) - early settlers of Lisbon, St. Lawrence County, New York.

Philip and Elizabeth were children of Michael Sharp/Scherp/Scherb and Elizabeth Carp/Karpp, Palatine German settlers of colonial New York.

Peter Henion reportedly was a son of Elias Hennion and Maria Phillips.

The above information has been pieced together from many sources. I will be happy to share sources.

Bill Hull

He also had a son, Winslow Morrill Ryan; however, I do not have any other info on him. I also know that as of 1900, Timothy and Olive were no longer together as Olive was living with her father, John, in Wisconsin.

Do you have any info on Timothy's parents? I have been unable to find anything definitive as there are several Timothy Ryans listed in different databases.

I'm looking for a listing of those buried in the cemeteries in or adjacent to Hayti. I'm trying to locate any STEIEs who may be buried there. They were Lutheran Norwegians who later homesteaded in North Dakota. The family minus the wife of Erick N. Steie were in Hayti in 1900. I am trying to locate where Erick's wife is buried and any information about her. Her name may be Mary or Maria. Thanks for you help.

Minnie was a school teacher for Hayti, District 4, 1901-1902 as I have a card with her picture and information. Her other sisters may also have taught in the area. Bryant High School also may have information as I have an old paperweight with Bryant High School decal. They left the area and homesteaded in North Dakota. Please help with info or direction.
My husband's great grandparents are Christian and Thea (Johanson)Eggeseth who immigrated from Norway about 1878 and lived in Estelline, Hamlin, SD in 1900, 1910, 1920. Christian died in 1911. Thea is still alive and living with her son, Gilbert, in 1920 in Estelline.

The family appears to have dropped off the face of the earth after 1920. Josie married Knute A. Ramsey so we are aware of where she is but the rest of the Eggeseth family seems to have no location.

Is there anyone descended from this family researching them who could help me with information about them.

Karen Wilson Ramsey

I just wanted to update and correct the old post.

Andrew Johnson was born Anders Nilsson to parents Inga Cajsa Andersdotter and Nils Jönsson. He was born 6 Aug 1866 in Elofstorpet, Treskog, Gunnarskog, Värmland, Sweden. He later chose the name Andrew Nelson Johnson in America.

Andrew Johnson's marriage year was wrong before. He was married 27 Jun 1895 in Leon, Goodhue, Minnesota to Sena Gunhild/Gunhilda Urevig. (Her name may have been Sina Gunhild Torrisdatter Urvik at birth.)

Andrew Johnson's death information from before was correct.

According to Andrew Hanson's death record age, he was born 17 Jun 1846. His birthplace is believed to be Skane, Sweden.

Andrew Hanson's death information from before was correct.

Although Andrew Hanson's wife was known as Carrie Hanson, her birth name was Inga Cajsa Andersdotter.

Anything more about these two men would be wonderful. Thank you!

Heather Shepard

My new E-mail address is Shepard.Heather@comcast.net

I am looking for an individual with the surname of Lemme who would have been born in the mid to late 1930s in South Dakota. His name may possibly be Will Lemme or his father's name may be Will Lemme. His mother was Evelyn Barrett who lived in Hazel, Hamlin County, South Dakota. The birth probably occurred at a Catholic home for unwed mothers. This individual may have gone to live with his biological father and possibly lived in Pipestone, Minnesota at one time.

Does anyone have any information about this individual?

A friend is working on this family:

Census of 1845, Denmark, Maribo, Lollands, Sandby Parish:

Hans Frederiksen, 37 & wf. Maren Rasmusdatter, 38
Her children by first husband Jorgen Hansen:
Hans Jorgensen, 12, & Jorgine Jorgensen, 11
Their children Jorgen, 8; Anne Kirstine, 6; Trine, 3; & et pigebarn udobt 1.

Jorgen Hansen was b. 3 Je. 1837, Sandby Parish, & bpt. there 6 Aug. 1837, s/o Hans Frederiksen & Maren Rasmusdatter.

Utterslev Churchbook: married 16 Nov. 1865, bachelor Jorgen Hansen, Sandby, 28, & widow Karen Kirstine Nielsdatter, 34.

In 1880, they were of Maribo, Lollands, Kobelev, Vesterbo:
Jorgen Hansen & wf. Karen Kirstine Nielsen
Svend Peder & Hans David Hansen.

They migrated via Copenhagen and New York in 1882. Jorgen Hansen patented in South Dakota, Hamlin Co., Twp. 113 - 53 [Norden Twp.], Section 31 NE, 23 Apr. 1891, #093789, under the Homestead Act. I couldn't find any other Danish settlers in the vicinity.

Hans David married in 1893 but Karen, Svend, & Hans David all died in 1894. Jorgen Hansen m2. Hansine CHRISTENSEN & had Maren, female, b. 29 Mar. 1900, Hamlin County. That was the only birth on the SD Births site of delayed records (most vital records began in 1905 in South Dakota). Ancestry database of the 1900 census has Jorgen HANSEN, b. ca. 1838; Hansine, 1859
Christ, 1883; Carl, 1884; James, 1890 [hers by prior marriage];
Rasm. Peder, 1896; Frederick, 1898; Maren, 1900.

Do you have any information, especially where the 1893 burials might be? They were supposed to be in "Lake Albert Cemetery," per the church record, but nobody seems to know where that was.
