This was not the John Bender I was looking for. But thanks
The name was written John Bender on the census. Worked as a hired man in and around Miller and Ree Heights. Catholic religion. Any ideas as to how to contact a Catholic church in that area. Maybe they have info.

Hi,

I wonder if he is the same person as a John Bender who died 21 March 1921 in Charles Mix Co. (death cert #81339).
Source: South Dakota Death Index 1905-1955.

If you could find this John Bender's obituary, you probably will be able to tell if they're the same person. The Platte Genealogical Society, PO Box 517, Platte, SD 57369-0517 is located in Charles Mix county and might be able to find an obituary for you. Successful Searching!

Hi Kathy,
Were you able to find any information regarding the death of William Alvin Molesworth? He is my husband's father's uncle. I think that I found him listed as a jeweler in the 1915 Great Falls, MT City Directory. He is married to Eulalie Molesworth. In the 1918 Great Falls City Directory, Eulalie is listed as a widow to W.A. Molesworth. This has me thinking that he died between 1915 & 1918.

My father-in-law said that William moved away from home & had nothing much to do with them after that.

Let me know if you have any new information to share!

Thanks!
Kara

1915 Great Falls City Directory:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=usdirectories&...

1918 Great Falls City Directory:
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

Hi Ellen.... You posted this so long ago its a long shot to make contact... Trygve Johnson would be a great uncle to me/my family.. We are descendants of his brother John Johnson who farmed outside of Sioux City, Ia and died young in 1946...... As you may have already found, Trygve died young also in 1952... There are 2 obituaries out on the internet on 2 of his sons (Paul, Clair) that you can find... I'm interested in knowing your connection here and where you are located... My email is: jmuscia@aol.com

Thanks..... John Uhl

I will take a look at my resources as well.

Best regards,
Jamie

I'm probably not much help, but my great uncle, Charles Richard Daugherty, born 1889, north of Wessington, Hand Co., not far from Vayland, was married to Gladys Lloyd. I think they were divorced and had a daughter named Pearl. I always wanted to know more about Gladys and Pearl. Are these names familiar?

Her middle initial was M, not for sure of the name though. As for the mother's name or another relative, I checked that and it revealed nothing. I am guessing that since she was extremely fearful of the husband she left that she assumed a totally different name altogether.

Barb -

Thank you for responding. I am aware of what Frank did to his second family. Information about Anna from family members is extremely sparse. About the only thing that we know is that she had a head injury and would sometimes encounter seizures because of it. I did not put 'two and two' together with her head injury until I came across the newspaper articles about Frank and his second family. On the marriage certificate with his second wife, Frank listed himself as being a widower, but as sparse as the information about Anna is, we do know that she did not die by the time he was remarried. Anna's siblings, except her sister (where the limited information comes from)never heard from her again. Although not for sure, her sister was pretty sure that she came back to South Dakota to live. I am not for sure if she changed her and her sons last name or both first and last name. Another possibility is whether she gave the boy up for adoption if she felt that she could not take care of him adequately because of the injury/seizures. What I am wondering is if anybody has any other information about her and her family while in Montana or has any ideas on a course of research that I could take to find more information after she left her husband. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Jim

You're welcome. You can order death certificates by mail, but you have to show proof of your identity, especially at the state department of health. I do not think the requirements are as specific for the county register of deeds.

Have you seen this? Apparently Frank shot his new wife, and two children in 1933, then killed himself. His wife survived, the article said only one daughter died, but the second died about 10 days later, according to the Montana death index. So Annie was very wise to leave him and go into hiding.
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/print.cgi?mt::7320.htm...

Anna Leyden Eves

I know this is a long shot, but I am going to try anyways. My grand-aunt, Anna Leyden, born 1896 in Bryant, Hamlin county, South Dakota, married Frank J. Eves in Montana in November, 1918. Based upon the 1920 Federal census, they had 1 child, Percy Eves, b. December 1919 in Montana. Family stories report that Anna was afraid of her husband and I found out that he beat her with a club and she survived. She then took their baby and left her husband. She apparently came back to SD but was so afraid of her husband that even her own siblings did not know where she lived. Through some research, we believe she lived around the Miller, Hand county, SD area. Because of the beating she received, she would have occasional seizures. Also, because of her fear of her husband, she probably lived with her son and probably kept pretty much to herself. We believe that she may even have changed her name (perhaps both first and last name)to help protect her identity. If anyone has any information about a person who fits this description or could lead me to where I could find information regarding this type of situation, please let me know - your help would be greatly appreciated since my grand-aunt seemed to disappear from our family history.

Sincerely,
Jim Leyden

So nice of you to offer your help! I am researching the Nicolas Duehr family. Nicolas was born in 1853 and died in 1913, in Hand County, I believe. He married Margaret Schmidt/Smith Russell of the area.

Anything you can find on these families would be much appreciated! Thank you so much for your assistance.

Hi Andrea,
Thanks in advance for your offer to help with research. I have really hit a snag with my great-grandfather, John Arly Howard. He was born in Illinois, but he and my ggrandmother, Lucretia Martin Howard, came to South Dakota in the late 1890's. They farmed, in Hand County we think and somewhere around 1900, he was killed in a farm accident. The story was that he was in a wagon that was hauling rocks, hit a bump, fell out and hit his head on a rock. We don't know the date he died or whether he is buried out in SD or my ggran brought him home to Illinois. She later remarried, to Willis Henderson, and they came back to SD and farmed the same land we think. I would appreciate any info you might come up with - obituary, newspaper story, guardianship papers(they had 2 small children-Guy Olin and Willis Ansel)or land records - anything about his death. Again I thank you in advance. Judy Blum

Hi there. I live in Hand Co, have lived here my whole life. I would love to help anyone with anything they need answers to. I live in St Lawrence but grew up in the North-East corner of Hand County. My Grandma has done alot of our family research. I am related to: Schade, Bush, Monnington, Corkins, Benning, Shevlin...and many more. Let me know if you have any questions, I have a "Bring on the Pioneers" book and have access to many other books. I can also ask my grandparents, they are a wealth of knowledge. andrealane1981@yahoo.com

Found in the 1910 Federal Census Guy O. Howard age 15 and
Willis A. Howard age 13 listed with Lucretia Henderson and
William Henderson. It appears that Lucretia married William
Henderson about 1907. Also found Willis A. Howard in the 1900 Federal Census with the family of Nelson & Sarah B. Powell, relationship shows nephew and living in Sullivan,
Moultrie, Illinois. Couldn't find John, Lucretia or Guy in
the 1900 census.

I am looking for any info available on my gg grandfather John Arly (sp?) Howard. I believe he lived in St. Lawrence/Hand County around 1897-1900 and owned land there. Also possibly died in an accident there around 1900. Wife's name was Lucretia (Martin) Howard, children were Guy O and Willis Ansel Howard.
