Hi,
There was a Henry Reichling in Emery, Hanson County, South Dakota who was married to Clara Bentz on February 4, 1878 in Worthington, Dubuque County, Iowa. They are buried in St. Martins Catholic Cemetery.

Henry Reichling
Born: Aug. 1844 in Luxembourg
Died: March 6, 1920
Grave location: Block 47, Lot 1, Grave 2

I was wondering if anyone out there has any information on where in Luxembourg Henry Reichling was born?

Thank you,

Keith Lawrence

k79lawrence@gmail.com

Mary __ BENTZ (1835/6 - 1911, SD)

I think your Margaret might have been Mary.

The information doesn't agree too well on the censuses because most of them say the family was from Luxembourg but others say from Germany. One census says they immigrated in 1860, but it must have been about 1862 because children John, Clara, & Catharine were born by 1862 in Luxembourg, and Nicholas was born about 1863 in Iowa.

Mary's age also varies. She was 36 in 1870, 46 in 1880, but 64 in 1900 [b. Aug. 1835] & 75 in 1910. She died 26 or 27 Oct. 1911, aged 79 or 80 [cemetery & county records, age probably exaggerated]. Your birth date of 8 Aug. 1836 could be correct. What is your source for that?

The only other BENTZ burial in Emery Catholic Cemetery that I know of is a male who died in 1920 aged 86 [only the surname is listed]. That wouldn't have been Mary's husband who was born around 1820/1 [50 in 1870, 59 in 1880].

Mary had ten children and only six were living in 1900, so the others are probably buried in Iowa. There's a break between Nicholas, b. ca. 1863, Iowa, & Jacob, b. July 1869, Iowa, & another break before Suza in 1877.

--not my family

I have an Anna Clara Bernardy in my tree who is my Great Great Grandfather's (Heinrich Bernardi) sister. My records show she never left Germany, her brother Heinrich settled in Epiphany and married Anna Klinkhammer before leaving Wiesbaum, Germany. I believe all the Bernardy graves at Epiphany are members of Heinrich's family, so if we are looking at the same Anna Bernardy, then indeed these are relatives, as I guess I would be also.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Mike Schneider
mjschne@bigfoot.com

"They want you to order the record, so they do not name the spouse of the person listed on a marriage, but you can sometimes insert the exact date and the county and figure it out, or you can go to FamilySearch.org and check there."

The WHS link "Search for possible spouse matches" works great. Why go to the Mormons for a partial transcription of a record that they got from the WHS when the full records are in local libraries (primary county and/or secondary state level)? I'd rather have the pdf or photo copy.

Occupy your local library or research collection. Whether lib'arians there want you to or not.

Gary Rebholz
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Kathy,
I don't remember if I ever sent you a photo of Henry Perrott's gravestone. I can't find any record of it. I'm sorry if I just dropped the ball, and you never got a photo.
Today I was doing some research and came across this old thread. I noticed that you asked if I had a website with the cem photos. Not a website of my own, but about 2 years ago i found out that the GPP(Gravestone Photo Project) finally had someone coordinate a South Dakota website. I found Brad Kellogg to be a great coordinator, so I have given 2 complete counties of cem pics, as well as several other peripheral cem, like Epiphany. A direct link to the SD branch of GPP is www.southdakotagravestones.org . This site is growing pretty fast, thanks to Brad and many other volunteers.
Bill Feller
Plano Township, Hanson, South Dakota

Plano is a township. It had one of the first consolidated schools in the state, built in 1915 and staying open until 1967. There were a school, teacherage, church, parsonage, and a couple of other buildings on the southeast corner of the school section (16). A horse barn was converted to a gymnasium but burned in 1952. A quonset auditorium/gymnasium was built the next year. After the school closed, the buildings were used by the Mitchell Technical School but later burned down. There is a sign on the southeast corner of Section 16 showing where the school was and the names of the graduates.

There's a poem by Juliette LaFortune Dougherty about one of the earlier schools, in Section 6, Plano Twp., also known as the Bayley School. It was on Riverside Road, a mile south of the Sanborn County line.

An old Plano schoolhouse was up for sale.
The crowd filled the yard clear up to the rail.
To me it brought memories of an eventful day
When all night in the schoolhouse I had to stay.
Yes, it was the blizzard of 1888.
No one alive can forget that date.
Our teacher warned us in words so stern
That we her anxiety did readily discern.
"The bell must not cease to ring throughout the night
So that anyone lost might hear and see our light."

Just then my reverie was broken by a man
Who came to the front and raised his hand.
"Friends," he said in an aged voice, and heaved a sigh,
"It's not the schoolhouse, but the bell, I came to buy."
Sam Jewett, we know him, an old pioneer of our state.
A man who helped to make our country great.
"Years ago, caught in a terrible blizzard one day
I was torn from my friends and soon lost my way.
All that happened that day is still hard to tell.
Suffice it to say, I was saved by that bell."

That doesn't seem to me to have been the same tornado. I checked BLM, online, and the 1900 census at FamilySearch.org.

There wasn't any KILLOP or WISE in Hanson Co. on BLM patents. I found no KING in Taylor Twp., Hanson Co., where Alexandria is.

Wilson WISE patented land in Twp. 106 - 60, and was also of Union Twp., Sanborn Co., in 1900. I couldn't find a patent for KILLOP, but Angus McKILLOP patented land in 107-60, Sanborn Co. There was no Sam KING listed by BLM, but there were James P., John H., & Wm. R. KING in 106-59, Diana Twp.

The SD State Historical Library in Pierre has some newspapers on microfilm.

I think I found it. Diana, SD is about 30 miles NW of Alexandria. Maybe someone else is interested:

Saint Paul Daily Globe
01 Sep 1884
thanks to the website http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov

The Jim River Tornado.
| Special Telegram to the Globe.]
Diana, Dak., An — Last Friday afternoon'about 3 o'clock a small black cloud was seen coming from the northwest, and when about fifteen miles distant a large spout came down out
of the cloud and appeared to raise smoke when it touched the ground. It crossed the Jim river about ten miles from here. It killed twenty eight cattle. Two young men who had been threshing saw it coming toward where their parents lived, and started on two mules to get across its path ahead of it. But they just came into the edge of it. The oldest one jumped off his mule and told his brother to do the same and lie down on the ground. The first one to jump lay in a dead furrow on a piece of breaking and escaped. lie saw his brother jump, but in five minutes he found him sixty rods away and every bone in his body broken. Both mules were killed. The man killed was Angus Killop; his brother's name is John. About three miles northwest of here the storm tore down Sam King's barn and moved his house off
the foundation. W. A. Wise had a nice frame one-story house, well built, which cost about $800. He was absent at the time, but near enough to see the destruction of his home. His boy gave the alarm and the mother and her three
children had barely time to get into the cellar when the house was raised from its foundation and dashed to pieces in the garden ten rods away. After making havoc along a path of about two miles, the storm broke in two. There was not much rain accompanying it.

The WPA Guide to South Dakota, written in the 1930s by the Federal Writer's Project says that a tornado hit Alexandria in 1884: "It is still related that in Alexandria, in 1884, when a tornado swept through the town, a woman who took her children into the cellar came up after the storm, lifted the trapdoor, and found the house gone."
A small pamphlet on local history, also written by the FWP and published in the offices of the Alexandria Herald gives the same story.
Could anyone find a more detailed account of this, including the name of the woman? Maybe a newspaper article from the time?

A. Bruce, the pair that figured in the restaurant holdup at Alexandria a few days ago, were committed to the South Dakota penitentiary today to serve terms of five and ten years, respectively, for first degree robbery. The two were sentenced for entering the restaurant and seizing the contents of the cash register. They tried to flee in an automobile but inadervantly [sic] headed down a blind street and were apprehended.
No, there was just a small clipping with the information I posted. The robbery hardly seemed worth the effort. Alexandria is a very small town, population about 500. I think the only cafe is northwest of town near Interstate 90.
Evening Republican, 22 Oct. 1927, p. 1: Pen Terms Given Pair That Robbed Alexandria Cafe

Alexandria, SD -- Miss Faye WISDOM & M. A. BRUCE, bound over to the next term of circuit court on the charge of robbing the Burlew restaurant here, have begun serving sentences of {illegible} and ten years, respectively, in the state penitentiary. Both entered pleas of guilty before Judge F. B. SMITH Thursday and were taken to Sioux Falls Friday by Hanson County Sheriff Matt Michels to begin their sentences.

The pair was arrested after they had held up the Burlew restaurant here Tuesday morning taking $18 from the cash register.
Hi Marily,

So I have unearthed some info. In fact, I was emailing with one of Clarence's daughters.. (Mary Jeanne- Lorna and Jane's sister.) She advised me that her mother told her that the all illusive Clara was a Benedictine nun and she doesnt know WHEN she died, but she did in Quebec, Canada.
I was at my grandmothers house yesterday and I found a letter addressed to my grandmothers brother(Ambrose Duda). It was from Clara (well- Sister Margaret Clare...). I've deduced that she was living in Spokane in 1937 (maybe working in a hospital as that is where the letterhead came from ) and she noted that she had been called to Montana as her brother JOhn was having complications with surgery and was requesting for family prayers.
Under her name is noted f.c.s.p . I had no clue what that meant so of course i use google! :) I found it means "filles de charite, servantes des pauvres" or sisters of providence.. My next move is to try to track her down and figure out when she went to Canada and her date of death.

Do you know Lorna?

Jennifer

He was caught and sent to prison for 10 years. I don't know exactly where the robbery was or sentencing. But he was sent to Sioux Falls, SD State Penitentiary Oct 21, 1927 from Hanson County on a charge of 1st degree robbery.

Any help in finding where these records would be, would help.
Farmer is a town of about fifty people about twenty miles east of Mitchell.

Jane's Argus Leader obituary is online. You can find addresses of the people named there on Zabasearch. Don lives at 761 Seventh St., Alexandria, SD, phone 605 - 239 - 4551. Sharon [HAMAKER] REHORST's father's obituary is also online. The obituary says Lorna is in Mississippi & Thomas is in Colorado Springs.

I cannot tell you about any marriage of George REHORST. SSDI has Christina's name at death as
Christina M. PARKER (10 S 1882 - 15 Nov. 1967). She m.
Robert PARKER (1883/4 - 4 May 1941, bu. St. Mary's, Stevensville, Ravalli, MT) per RootsWeb.
Their son Clair PARKER's dates on SSDI are (1908 - 1998). George was too young to have married her before that. It's possible they married after the death of Robert PARKER when the age difference of eleven years would not have mattered. She could have gone back to the PARKER name after George died. So much for guessing. :-) I don't know anything about Clara, either.

Clarence REHORST was on the census in Ravalli Co., MT, 1910, 1920, & 1930, so I think he returned to rather than staying in South Dakota.

Good Luck!

There was one at Fulton until fairly recently, and there is one in Alexandria. The United Methodist Conference Office is at 1331 W. University Ave., Mitchell, SD 57301.

There is an abandoned cemetery north of Fulton, Fairview Twp., Section 7 SE. We stopped there one time, but, even in May, it was too overgrown with the last year's tall grass to read any tombstones. I was told there are ten known graves there.

How Far is Mitchell, SD from Farmer? Is Farmer even a town now?
I understand Jane Bender, nee Rehorst passed in June-correct? I'm sorry to hear that. Do you know the rest of her siblings? I found that Donald is living in the area still- do you know of him? Do you know of a way to get ahold of him? Email? Phone? Please let me know..

As for the death dates/locations for the Rehorst children, I have the following: Louis J and Margaret (Zeihen) Rehorst both died in 1934 and are both buried in the Mt Angel Cemetery, Mt Angel, OR. Their children, Rosalia C Rehorst, died in 1930 after complications with childbirth and is buried in the Mt. Angel Cemetery, Mt Angel, OR. (These 3 I have photos of the grave stones if you are interested.)

Leroy F Rehorst (married to Bernadine) Died in 1969 in Vancouver, WA and is buried at the St. James Acres Cemetery (renamed as Mother Joseph Catholic Cemetery) at the St. James Catholic Church in Vancouver, WA. Also his brother George G Rehorst, died in 1961 is also buried there. I plan on going to that cemetery today ( I live in Vancouver). Question.....I have George G's spouse as Christina Zeihen..(Isnt that his first cousin??- I see that this is her 2nd marriage.. I dont think they had children.., but was it his 1st marriage?)

Clarence Peter, (Donald, Lorna and Janes father) stayed in SD and died there in 1959. Although, I do know at some point he did come out to visit in Oregon as in 1921 we have photos of Clarence and Rosalia on Rosalia's wedding day to Clement Duda.

I see that John Joseph and Leo Lewis, although at one point seem to be living out here in Oregon, moved back East. Both of them died in Montana. John in 1937 and Leo in 1957. They are both buried at St Mary's Cemetery, in Stevensville, Ravalli Co, Montana.

The only unknown I have is: Clara Rehorst. I have no record of her marrying or dying. I only have her birth as being in Oct 1891.

Does this match the info you have for my family?

Please feel free to email me at my personal email. Rileerose@aol.com

Thanks!

Jennifer

PS as for the question- do I know Lorna Rehorst Martin... Personally? No.. On paper? Yes... I believe that she is living out in Colorado Springs, Co... I think....

I'm not related. I live in Mitchell, SD. My only connection is through a cousin whose wife is related to the husband of Jane Bender, nee Rehorst (28 Je. 1937 - 18 Je. 2010). You could contact the Catholic Church. I think that the Farmer church was reopened after the Spencer tornado, but I do not have an address. Try the Catholic Parish Center, 620 Cordo St., Spencer, SD 57374.

You can Google SSDI to find dates for those who lived long enough to have a Social Security Number. For Clarence, just use the surname and SSN issued in SD, since SSDI doesn't show his last residence.

Do you know Lorna Rehorst Martin?

I'm actually hoping to gain some insight.. Everything I have found shows their second daughter being Rosella. However, my grandmother and her sister INSIST their mothers name was Rosalia. I havent been able to find a family bible or the like to confirm. Can you?
Please let me know... Thanks!

Google Pilot.FamilySearch.org.

You can find Otto HANSON & Eva in Roberts County, SD. In 1910,
Otto was 29, Eva R., 19, & Murrel less than a year.
SD births: _ born 29 Je. 1909.
Roberts Co., 1920, Otto was 37, he & parents b. Norway, brother Lenard was 32.
Roberts Co., 1930, Otto was 47 & Eva, 37.
In Sisseton, Long Hollow, Roberts Co., 1935, Otto was 54, and had married Eva OTTO in 1908.

I was not able to find much about Le(o)nard because there were at least two of them in Roberts County born in Norway and about the same age. Maiden names of wives listed were Fred, Klulting, & Ella [?]

I checked Digitalarkivet of Norway online. They do not show any Stencerud but there over 500 Stensrud farms. I think it's likely that the family used both the farm [Stensrud] and patronymic [Hansen/Hanson] versions of the name. In Roberts Co., 1920, There were STENSRUD, Severt, 32; Julia, 23; Bernice, 5; Elmer, 4; Clifford 2, & Myrtle under 1.

In 1935, Severt STENSRUD was 47, m. 1913, Julia HAGAN. Ellis Island has a record of one Syver STENSRUD, 23, from Brottum, Hedmark, Norway, who arrived 24 Mar. 1909, but that age doesn't match. Brottum is just down the fjord from Lillehammer but across the "county" line from Oppland in Hedmark. I also didn't find any Otto HANSON to match. Many Norwegian immigrants came through Canada and the Great Lakes.

Have you tried to find death certificates and obituaries?

What is your source of the information that Otto HANSON migrated in 1887? If it was the Otto born in 1883, his parents must have come, too. I checked BLM +"land patents." There was no STENSRUD for Roberts County. There were several HANSONs, but neither a Leonard nor Otto, so if one was their father, he had a different first name.
--not my famiy

The index does not give any dates of death and I do not have a date of death for Englebert. There is also a Grace Meyers who could possibly be his daughter. Who can I contact to find the death dates and additional information for persons on this list? The last conclusive piece of info I have on this family is the 1930 US Census.

Yes, Peter Herres did marry Mary Dunn daughter of James Dunn and Elizabeth Bigley. They eventually ended up in British Columbia, Canada where they had a 5th daughter and where they died. Their four other daughters were born in Hanson county SD. Peter went to Canada before Mary and the girls so they are the only ones who show on the 1900 US census. I do have some records of their life there. A brother of Peter's, Mathias, also moved to the same area of Canada where he died. He never married.

Peter's sister Barbara married Spencer John Dunn brother of Mary Dunn (above). So sister and brother married sister and brother.

Your information was helpful, and I thank you. I do still hope to find someone who can see if obits exist for Spencer and Barbara. I have been able to get some obits on some other memebers of the family.

Renee

Did Mary DUNN m. Peter HERRES?

The combination of names with Mary HERRES in Edgerton, Hanson Co., SD, 1900, must mean that she was Mary DUNN & wife of Peter HERRES. She said married rather than widowed. Where was Peter?

Methodist Church records

I would like to know if there are Methodist Church records for the Methodist Church at Famer, S.D. for the late 1890s to the early 1900s.

According to an obituary for Horace Carr he joined the church in 1902.

I am also trying to find the burial location of Morris and Anna Rowe. In the 1900 census they lived on a farm in Edgerton Twp. Hanson Co. S.D. This is the last record of them that I have been able to find. According to family stories they are buried in the Farmer area. I have been unable to find any burial information about them. Does anyone know if there are any abandonded cemeteries in that area that they might be in?

Horace Carr's wife, Flora, is the daughter of Morris and Anna.

Hoping someone can help find these people.

Sandy Dempsey

1870 Census Kankakee Co Illinois
LIPCA family, Henry, wife Alice,
dau Anna age 13, twin sons, John &
William, and Daniel, age 2, b. Ill.
(Daniel was listed top of next page
of census!!) A servant girl was
listed just before the last child!
I feel convinced that this is no
doubt that it probably is the Henry
and Alsa Luebker in the 1880 Creston
NE Census. I don't know why the son,
Henry Luebker (Lubker) b. May 1855
would have been missing from that 1870
census....unless he went off on his own.
He was already on his own in the 1880
census in Columbus, NE.

I appreciate the posting of the LIPCA
family in Kankakee, ILL I knew the Lubker
family was in Illinois for six years
before they moved to Nebraska, but those
names get so changed by the enumerators,
and I never would have thought of LIPCA.
