Thanks for your reply and for the historical background about the Lutheran parishes of Hutchinson Co. I understand what you said about which parish they were in determines where the records are now located. Carl Raabe's obit just said they belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kaylor. Do you know if that is the same as St. Johns and if so, where would the records be now?
Thanks.
Jon

The Immanuel Lutheran Parish of Hutchinson County was organized April 1, 1880 and consisted of 8 parishes, until th 1890's then there were 4 parishes from 1940-1959. There were 2 parishes until 1969 when they disbanded. Some members moved to the Scotland Church some went to St. John's (Missouri Synod). Depending on which parish they were with they with will depend on where the information is.

Hoping to find obit for Dorothea (Evers)Raabe who died 17 Feb 1920. She and her husband Carl Raabe farmed in Bon Homme Co., but belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kaylor, Hutchinson, Co. They are buried in the cemetery adjoining St. John's Lutheran Church. Is St. John's the same as the Evangelical Lutheran Church and does it exist today?
Thanks.
Jon

Hello Robert,

I have visited the archive of the town of Münstereifel some years ago. There exists a list of people, who emigrated in the 19. century, mostly to N-America.

Under number 24 there is listed an Anton Lingscheid (shoemaker) from Schönau (near Münstereifel), who wanted to emigrate with his family [wife: Anna Elise Müller, 46 years old, children: Michael Anton 11 years old, Joseph 8 years old, Anton 6 years old] to North America on 17 March 1845. He got his permission on 19 April 1845.

Under number 3 there is listed a Johann Lingscheid (shoemaker) from Schönau, who emigrated in 1828..

Volker

Thank you very much for the reply to my query about the Vanderweillens. Now I know Kyrn was possibly not my great grandfathers given name. I do know this research has become quite an adventure. I had visited SD several times to meet family on the Kurtenbach side (my mother). Kyrn is my dad's grandfather and he knew little of him. My dad was born in 1912. Again thank you for your time and feel free to post me again. Charlene Sightler

I have very little information about Kyrn and Mary but have a picture of her and some of her children. Two children were born in NY according to the1900 census.

This is a followup to my previous post.

I found a record online for a Joannes Petrus Ohlert who was born in the Catholic parish at Mutscheid, Rheinland, Prussia on 9 Dec 1822. The name and birthdate are a potential match for the John Peter Ohlert who was living in the Grimm household with Gertrude and Joseph in Peru Township, Iowa, and then later in Minnesota.

I looked up Mutscheid on google maps, and it turns out that the neighboring town is called Schönau. That is a match to the name of the parish on Joseph's birth certificate. The town of Schönau is now technically part of the city of Bad Münstereifel.

Then I found that there is a farm 2 kilometers north of Schönau called Lingscheiderhof. Hmmm. That name looks familiar. So I looked up the name of the church in Schönau (St. Goar) and sent an email.

Yesterday I received an answer from the church. Indeed the name of the pastor in 1855 was Johann Hübbers. This was the person who signed Joseph's birth certificate. He was the pastor from 1834 - 1860. According to the church, Antonius Lingscheid and Gertrudis Hündgen were married 24 Jan 1845 in the town-hall of Münstereifel. Under regulations in effect at the time, they had to marry at the town hall before they could marry in the church. They were married in the church on 25 Jan 1845. The entry in the church book states that they were both from the hamlet of Bouderath, which is just outside Schönau. The church also confirmed that Johann Peter Ohlert and Gertrud Hündgen were married on 15 April 1852.

My great grandfather is Cornelius Vanderweillen. I believe his brother's name was Kryn and I thought his father was also a Kryn until I found land records in Hutchinson county that he had a different name. It was Leonard Nicholas Vanderweillen. I have a letter from the dad asking about Kryn. I was told that Cornelius' grew up in an orphanage in Rochester, New York. Cornelius' bible says he was born in Rochester, New York.
I briefly say the name Kryn Vanderweillen as an artist or painting instructor in Rochester. I only saw it once and never again. It was in reference to a famous painter being taught by Kryn.
I don't know anything about a Mary. I believe when I search for Vanderweillens in South Dakota, a Mary's name shows up with Vanderweillen being spelled with one l.
The lady associated with the post doesn't answer my e-mails, so I don't know if she is still living.
My e-mail is vaughn0501@sbcglobal.net and I will gladly share all I have on the Vanderweillens.
Research Notes on Joseph Lingscheit

I took an interest in Joseph and Catherine Lingscheit because my grandmother was Sylvia Lingscheit, daughter of William Lingscheit, youngest son of Joseph and Catherine.

Having seen the copy of Joseph Lingscheit’s birth certificate in Eleanor Harris’s book Big Joe, I set out to try to find where the family came from in Germany. Unfortunately I could not find any passenger manifests listing a Joseph Lingsheid or a Gertrude Lingscheid or an Anthony Lingscheid emigrating to the U.S. The earliest record I could find for Joseph Lingscheit in an online search showed him living in Minnesota in the 1870s.

Big Joe says that Joseph was born in “Scotia Parish.” I asked a couple of German friends where Scotia Parish might be, and they insisted that the place does not exist. Indeed, a Google search of “Scotia Parish” turns up nothing but an internet post referring to Joseph Lingscheit and the book Big Joe. My German friend suggested that the family probably immigrated to the U.S. through Nova Scotia. So I started checking the immigrant passenger manifests to Canada. No luck. All dead ends.

Then I decided to study the birth certificate for other clues. And I discovered that the birth certificate does not refer to Scotia Parish at all. Instead it refers to “parochia Schönau.” And it was executed by Pastor Hübbers in Schönau on 22 March 1855. My guess is that they got this from the church around the time they decided to leave for the U.S. That would fit with Big Joe’s claim that Joseph was 9 years old when he left for the U.S. (p.12). They probably wanted to take copies of vital records with them. I asked my German friends about “parochia Schönau.” They shrugged and said that there are a lot of place names in Germany called Schönau.

Big Joe said that Joseph’s father died when he was 5 and that his mother remarried. The book says his step-father was named “Thomas” -- but does not provide a last name. The book refers to Joseph’s little sister, but does not say what her name was. The book refers to a half-brother named John, and suggests that John was born after the family arrived in the U.S. (p.14). I therefore started looking for a Thomas and Gertrude traveling with two children, probably all traveling under Thomas’s surname, but still I could find no matches on the passenger manifests. Why not? This should be enough information for a match! I know that some passenger manifests were lost or unreported, but this was a big discouragement.

Big Joe says that the family first went to Wisconsin, then to a small cottage near Dubuque, Iowa when the money ran out. The book does not suggest how much time may have passed between these two stops. I drew a blank on Wisconsin, so I started looking in Dubuque – specifically directories and census records. And then an amazing find! In the 1860 Federal Census (which had to be relatively soon after the family arrived in the U.S. around 1855), a “Joseph Linksheid” shows up as a 15 year old farm laborer living in the household of a certain “Justis Grim” in Peru Township, County of Dubuque. A quick check of the map shows that Peru Township is indeed near the banks of the Mississippi River very close to Dubuque. Who else is living in this household? Justis Grim (age 39), Catherina Grim (age 26), Justis Grim Jr. (age 4), Edward Grim (age 1), Mary Specht (age 12), Joseph Linksheit (age 15), and Johann Hinter (age 50). Who are these Grims? And why are three non-Grims of such diverse ages living in the house? Hmm. Very odd. Maybe this Johann Hinter is the guardian who was supposed to look after Joseph until age 21? Or was that Justis? In any event, Big Joe says that Joseph ran away from home after his mother and baby sister died, and this record puts him living in a different household at age 14 or 15. I seemed to be on the right track. This fit with the general gist of Big Joe, though the details were way off.

Next step is to check the prior and later census records. Of course the prior Federal Census in 1850 is too early because the family was still in Europe. But as luck would have it, Iowa decided to hold a state census in the curious year of 1856 – a year after Joseph and his family supposedly immigrated. But if the family went to Wisconsin first, it is probably too early for them to appear in Iowa in 1856. Nothing came up in an internet search of the 1856 Iowa Census. I was about to give up, but I decided to check the records in Peru Township page by page, which was not difficult because there were so few people living in Peru Township at that time. In fact, there are still very few souls living in Peru Township, Iowa.

And then bingo! Gustas Grimm -- could this be the same person as Justis Grim from the 1860 census? – and his wife Catherine Grimm and their son Gustas Jr. Yes, this must be the same family! Spelling was so inconsistent in those days! But no Edward in the household in 1860 – he probably died as an infant. So who else is living in the household? Henry Eilers (age 57) and a family from Prussia. The family from Prussia includes John Ohlert (age 32), Gertrude Ohlert (age 29), Joseph Ohlert (age 10), John Ohlert (age 5) and Anton Ohlert (age 4). This looks like it might be Joseph’s step-family. Factors that suggest it is: mother’s name is Gertrude, Joseph’s age is spot on, and Big Joe said that Joseph had a half brother named John. Factors against: Step-father’s name is John, not Thomas. No little sister is listed. The age for Johnnie suggests he had to be born in Prussia, not the U.S. And what to make of the fact that the youngest member of the family is named Anton??? Perhaps John and Gertrude Ohlert decided to name their second child after Joseph’s father and Gertrude’s deceased first husband? On one hand this seems to fit, but it sure does not sound like the stepfather Thomas character in Big Joe.

Time to do more research into the Ohlert name.

Unfortunately, I found no death records or findagrave.com hits for a Gertrude Ohlert. Spelling variations? It turns out that the original spelling of Ohlert is often Öhlert (same as Oehlert), but still no hits for a Gertrude Oehlert. Time to turn to John Ohlert. A John P. Ohnert turns up in the 1865 Minnesota census, living alone. No Gertrude, no Johnnie, no Anton. Could this be the same John Ohnert? Check the 1870 Federal Census, and indeed it is. John Jr. and Anthony are living with him in Hartford Township, Todd County, Minnestota. But no Gertrude, which fits the story that Gertrude died soon after arriving in the U.S.

Minnesota? That rings a bell. Didn’t Joseph and his new bride Catherine move from Dubuque to Minnesota soon after they married in 1869? But if Joseph was running away from his step father, why would he move to Minnesota? Check the 1870 census, and indeed there he is! Joseph and Catherine are family #35 in Hartford Township, Todd County, and John Ohlert and his two sons are family #47 in Hartford Township, Todd County – in fact, on the very next page of the census records!

Contrary to the narrative in Big Joe, I do not think that Joseph’s relationship with his step-father was all that bad. Perhaps Joe did run away from home after his father moved to Minnesota. But where did he go? He went right back to Dubuque, and lived in the same house that he lived in soon (or immediately?) after the family arrived in the U.S. Maybe he simply missed the Grimm family household and wanted to go back to Iowa? Maybe Catharina Grimm was a motherly figure to him? Maybe he made friends there? This is all speculation. But it is a cold hard fact that after he married Catherine Dietrich, Joseph did not hesitate to move to the same neighborhood in Minnesota as his step-father and his half brothers. The relationship cannot possibly be as bad as presented in Big Joe, unless perhaps the villain Thomas in Big Joe was someone other than his stepfather? This is entirely possible.

More evidence that the relationship was not all that bad: The Ohlerts and the Lingscheits all left Minnesota around the same time. True, they did not leave for the same destination. John Ohlert and his sons moved to Washington State. Joe and Catherine left for Denver but decided to stop in Rock because the children were sick. And finally, where did the birth certificate come from? Who took care of it after Gertrude died? I think stepfather John probably gave it to Joe or Catherine for safekeeping sometime after the family reunited in Minnesota.

Okay, by now I am pretty sure that Joseph’s stepfather was named John Ohlert. Time to go back to the passenger lists. And now there is finally a match! A Johan Ohlert (age 32) and Gertrude Ohlert (age 29) left Antwerp, Belgium in 1855. The ship name was the George Hurlbut. A quick check shows that many German emigrants departed for the U.S. from the port in Antwerp. The ship arrived in New York on 25 June 1855. The date matches the date in Big Joe, as Joseph would have been 9 years old in 1855. It fits well with the date of the birth certificate they received from the church in March 1855 before they departed. They had three children with them on the voyage: Joseph, John and Anton. The ages of the children as listed on the manifest seem wrong, but surely the ages on the manifest must be wrong or illegible? There are too many factors that indicate this must be the same family.

A quick check of the ship George Hurlbut: It was built in Essex, Connecticut in 1850, and a picture of the ship is posted at: http://www.essexhistory.org/history-of-essex-ct.htm. It was a sailing ship and not a steamer, which fits the story that Joseph came over on a sailing ship. And it sailed to New York, which fits the story in Big Joe.

So where did the family come from in Germany if they left from the port at Antwerp, Belgium? The fact that they did not depart from the northern ports of Bremen or Hanover suggests that they came from further south, or possibly a place in southwest Germany for which Antwerp would be the most logical port city. Lingscheid and Öhlert were not common surnames at the time, at least not as common as many other German names from the north, where there was a lot more emigration. The same is true of the forenames Anthony and Gertrude. But all of these names were relatively more common in the Rheinland and Baden Württemburg (upper Rheinland). And indeed there are well known place names named Schönau in Baden Württemburg, including Odenwald and Schönau in Schwarzwald. This seems to me to be the best hypothesis at the moment, but more research is required!

-Robert Wachter (reachable at robertwachter at gmail.com)
Have you seen the book "Our Place in Rural America, Milltown, South Dakota" (pub. 1996)? There are a few photos in the book, and one or two might date from prior to 1900?? Also, a John Fanslow (probably the son of Michael) purchased 80 acres in Milltown Twp. from the US Land Office in 1884. He sold it a year later, however. This parcel was eventually sold to my grandfather in 1906 (which is why I recognized the name Fanslow).

Hi Beth,

Well, we have a similar case here... The family name begins as Förtsch...going back to the middle ages in Lower Franconia, Bavaria. Several brothers and sisters immigrated to the US in the mid-1840's and we see Förtsch in parish registers where German was still widely spoken, such as Wisconsin. Foertsch is the normal "international" version of the name and we see this in parish registers in Bavaria as well, as well as in civil records in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

In some cases, the was recorded in censuses as Firch, Forch, Fortsch and Ferch.

I'm sure the owners of the trees for Charles Fetch will be happy with your help as well, as they had no trace of his parents or further ancestry in any of their trees.

Best Regards,
Rick

Hi Rick,

One of my own Swiss / German ancestors changed the spelling of their last name so much that it was difficult to find them at first. The last name was spelled:

Baertsch, Bartsch, Birtch, and then it finally remained as Burch. The name lost much more than just an umlaut!

I haven't found an obituary for Charles or his wife, but with the long list of children, there may be some information in old newspapers somewhere.

Beth

Hi Beth,

What a wonderful reply to receive! Thank you very much!

I have an obituary posted on his sister Amelia Reukauf's page. This link should get you there, but just in case I also tagged it for his profile, where it should now appear: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/22115091/person/1186961664/me...

Because of the prevalence of German in Wisconsin we see the umlauts being used interchangably with the international spellings...ae, oe, ue, etc.

It seems to me that you have found the person I am looking for. I'm in Luxembourg, in Europe, and it is late here now but I will look in detail first thing in the morning.

I thank you once again and will definitely contact the volunteer at the link you posted.

Best Regards,
Rick Larsen

Hi Rick,

The spelling of the last name was given in the 1903 newspaper account as Foertsch, keeping the umlaut but dropping the s.

You have such a large family tree, that it is difficult for me to tell who the sister, Mrs. Reukauf, was. Do you have her obit or obits of her siblings that might mention Charles?

Here is the link to the volunteer-run Hutchinson County, SD, genweb site. There is one volunteer listed to do lookups:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sdhutchi/

I found a Charles F. Fitch / Fetch [sic] born about 1859 Wisconsin, married to a Christine, in 1900 Mitchell, Davidson County, SD. This is close to Hutchinson. In 1910 they are in Kadoka Township, Stanley County, SD.

I will do more searching, but this is a likely match.

Beth
not related

Hi,

I'm researching a Ferdinand "Charles" Foertsch who according to newspaper articles in Racine, Wisconsin, lived on a "...large spread of land for many years..." in Parkston, SD. The newspapers articles are posted on my tree on Ancestry. One dated 1 Sep 1903 said he lived there already for many years. Another obituary in 1941 says he was still in South Dakota.

I've manually searched the US Federal censuses for 1900 and 1910 and I can find no trace of him.

Are there any local history experts out there who could help me? Is it possible he changed his name?

He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1859.

Thank you in advance!
Rick Larsen

Wondering if you ever found someone to take photos of the Dakota City Cemetery? I have just one ancestor couple buried there - James C. Smith and his wife Catherine, both died in 1888. I borrowed the Dakota City/Parkston Advance newspapder on microfilm via interlibrary loan from the South Dakota Historical Society(cost me $20, but worth it!) and found a small obit for Catherine who died Nov 26, 1888. But James died "last spring" and the microfilm was missing issues from March thru May which was when he apparently died.

I noticed that you had the two pictures that I sent to you of our Greatgrandparents, but did not remember If I sent you any other documents so I just sent these also to you. The Ehrhart gravestone that has the baby's name is the fron side and the back side of the stone has all the Names with Cusack on it which is where I start to fit in. You will notice that Myrtle H Cusack( She was one of our greatgrandparents children)She was a Ehrhart and married Edmund Cusack. The Gravestone is @ Riverside Cemetary In Norwalk COnnecticut. Our Grandparents names are not enscribed on the stone but that is where they are buried. If I can be of any other further assistance my regular e-mail which I check regularly is dough147@gmail.com.

Joseph T.
