David Graham farm in Denver Township, Ward 3

My great-grandparents David and Ellen Graham farmed in Kingsbury County from about 1881 until the 1920s. I am trying to locate where exactly their farm was. Additionally, David was apparently a horse dealer in the area. Any suggestions for finding more information about these topics?

Hi Marilyn,
Yes, you are correct. And now we are rested, relaxing in FL. No sunshine, but lots warmer. Glad we by-passed SD. It would have been going from one snowstorm to another. We won't have as much time for research while on the road, but we expect to get back at it quite a bit this winter..... Hope all is well in Mitchell area. I missed our family reunion there at Thanksgiving time.

Jay,
We are overnighting at Seattle airport, and I'm tired, but sleepless.
I don't know if anyone can prove that Mary O'Connor was actually a daughter of John Connor & Mary Mathews. In more than one census it shows she was born in Ireland. But John & Mary were married in GA, where Thomas was born. Mary was definitely connected to John & Mary, but maybe a niece. Or maybe she was born before they came to the US and got married. She is my direct ancestor, so I hope to find out some day. My Irish ancestry(O'Connor & Calhoun) is my least known by far, so I think that is my next research this winter.
Are you familiar with Tim Winker's website? He doesn't show too much on the O'Connors, but may have more info available. www.winker.net .
Bill Feller

I show Honora being a daughter of Charles and Eliza, but have no other information.

Thomas's father John O'Connor was also married to a Mary Mathews.
Re: Hattie Pauline Bengaard (Hansen) Christoffersen

I wouldn't suggest "maybe Hans Christofferson Bengard." ..... Since the 1920 census in Cass Co, MN says that Pauliine was born in MN, but Johanna & Hans were born in SD, Then the Bengards must have lived in SD, then moved to MN by the time Pauline was 20. While in SD Alfred Christofferson probably got to know her and went to MN to marry Pauline and bring her back to Kingsbury Co.
In further research(esp 1900 census), it may help to know just when Pauline celebrated her birthday. Since the 1920 census says she was 20, it conflicts with other sources that say she was born 1902. ..... As far as Pauline's mother, in 1927 and 1939, she was listed in the Brainerd, MN phone book. She may have died there about 1939, since I couldn't find her in the 1940 census.
Someone has a family tree on MyTrees.com for your Bengard family. Is that you? or someone you know?
If you google "Bengaard, Brainerd, MN" you can find a link to the obit for Arthur Bliss, naming his mother "Hannah Bengaard" This is probably Pauline's 1/2 sister Johannah.
Hope this all helps.
Bill Feller

So from this you think that Pauline's family was

Step dad: Hans C. Bengard (maybe Hans Christoffersen Bengard?
Mom: Margarth Jensen
Sister: Johanna (Hanna) (1903)
brother: Hans

Thank you so much!!! This is more info than even my Dad knew about his mom!

It has always been a bit of a mystery to him...his mom died when he was young and was sick during much of his life, dying finally in the hospital in Yankton for mentally ill.

So he didn't really live with her that much.
I thought I already submitted a response, but I don't see it. It had some error in my thoughts, so disregard it if it shows up.... I am not at all related, but do some genealogy in Miner & Codington Co, SD and some in between(including Kingsbury).
I found the 1920 census for Cass Co, Mn. It appears to have Pauline's family. Hans C Bengard had a wife Margaret, a stepdaughter H Pauline HANSON(20), a dau Johanna(16, born in SD), & son Hans(born in SD). Using the SD birth index, I also found that Hans Christofferson & Margarth Jensen had a daughter Hanna(Johanna) born in SD in 1903. Along with this, I checked for a marriage in the SD index of marriages for Pauline and Alfred, but no luck. So it appears that the Bengards were in SD, then moved back to Minn. by 1920. ....I'm would suggest that Alfred got to know Pauline and went over to Minn where she was living to marry her.
Anyhow, this explains Pauline's maiden name and gives you her mother's maiden name.
Hope this helps. Good luck from here.
Bill Feller
Pauline Christoffersen was married to Alfred P. Christoffersen. They farmed near Lake Preston. She and Alfred are buried at Badger. I have great information on Alfred but NO information on Pauline's family. After discussion with her children, they think Alfred and Pauline were married in SD. They think her first name was probably Hattie and that she used Bengaard as a maiden name but they think she was raised by a Bengaard and was actually a Hanson by birth. There is some thought that she was born in Minnesota.

I would love to know who her parents were and whether she had siblings.

Ågot who was the oldest one, she and her family signed out of Skånevik where she lived April 10. No record about their father Anders Olson, he is in the cemetery records of Calamus, Clinton. as Anna.
Posted October 9, 2012: Magnar, The reason you could not find the post is that I deleted it after realizing I had posted some incorrect information. Below is a corrected version of the post along with my comments and questions. Arlen

From the parish register on Digitalarchivet:
Skanevik Ministerialbok 1848-1869, p. 344:
March 14, 1860, Peder Ammonson Lio 26 3/4

Kvinnherad Ministerialbok 1854-1872, marriage records on p. 195, entry #3:
April 14, 1860, Marriage of Peder Ammonson Lien from and Ingeborg Andersdatter Ladberg

Kvinnherad Ministerialbok 1854-1872, udflyttede records on p. 271, entry #58:
April 14, 1860, Ingeborg Andersdtr, age 27.

Comment: According to the above information, it appears Peter signed out of his parish on March 14 giving his destination as North America, but before leaving the area he went to Ingeborg's parish to marry her on April 14, 1860. This would explain Ingeborg being signed out of the Kvinnherad parish without on April 14, 1860, for North America, but Peter not being signed out with her. Is this a correct summary of what occurred?

From Passenger ship Web site:
Assuming they left Norway in 1860, they likely sailed from Norway on the "Hebe" which left Stavanger May 11, 1860, and arrived in Quebec June 11 or the "Normand" which left Bergen May 12 and arrived in Quebec on May 31. Which ship do you think they sailed on?

From the 1860 U. S Census: I have not found Peter and Ingeborg in Story County, Iowa, nor in Kendall, Grundy, and LaSalle counties in Illinois nor in Clinton or Benton counties in Iowa where there were two other Norwegian settlements. I assume their destination was Lisbon, Illinois, where Peter's brother, Askel and his wife were living at that time, but I could not find Askel and Lisbet there, either. Another brother, Thomas, had been living there, but when Peter and Ingeborg arrived in Quebec, Thomas and Helen were on their way to Story County, Iowa, where they were enumerated on June 29, 1860.

From the 1900 Census, South Dakota, DeSmet Township, City of DeSmet:
Peter A. Lien 67, b. May 1833, emigrated 1861
Isabel 66, b. July 1833, emigrated 1861

Comment: According to this census, Peter and Ingeborg emigrated in 1861, but I think this must have been a reporting or enumeration error. If it was a reporting error, Peter and Ingeborg may have been thinking about the year they came to Iowa instead of the year they emigrated. Askel and Lisbet left Lisbon for Iowa in early July of 1861, and Peter and Ingeborg most likely came with them.

From the Story County Land Records: Peter's first land purchase was on June 4, 1867, 40 acres in Section 21 of Howard Township, so land records do not help establish their date of arrival in Story County, either.
Arlen. Could not find your last post, try to answer you about what port Peter and Ingeborg went by, Bergen or Stavanger. Pretty sure this was Bergen, it was a normal way out of Kvinnherad, here it was possible to sail in protected waters, think they used 2 or 3 days. Not befor 1861 a reguler route by steamboat was made. Magnar

Thank you both. Peder and Ingeborg married in Kvinnherad April 14. 1860. It seems to me that they had planned the emmigration before they got married. According to the church records Peter moved out of Skånevik on March 14. 1860 for North America and Ingeborg on April 14. the same day they married. The correct birth day of Ingeborg is July 21. 1833. Magnar.

Magnar, I think I have found Peter in the parish registers, Skaanevik Ministerialbok 1848-1869, p. 344, first entry. If this is him, he emigrated in 1860, but for the 1900 Census, South Dakota, DeSmet Township, both Peter and Ingeborg reported emigrating in 1861. Also,Ingeborg is not listed with Peter in the parish registers which makes me wonder if they were married in the U.S. Any thoughts? - Arlen

Magnar, Bob made me aware of your interest in this family. Peter and my great great grandfather, Askel, were brothers. Below is a 1935 biography of this family which is really all I know about them. Would really like to know where Peter and Ingeborg are buried. Arlen Twedt

Life History of Peter Lein, 1833-1906

Peter Lein was born at the Lein homestead or estate, Lein, Skaanevig, Norway, May 29, 1833. He was united in marriage to Ingebor Johnson from Kvennara, Norway. She was born July 20, 1835 and died September 15, 1917. Peter Lein died September 20, 1906.

They came to America in 1860 and settled one and a half miles west of Roland, Story County, Iowa where the children were all born. She was such a sweet and pretty girl; we all missed her.

Peter Lein with his family moved to Nebraska in the spring of 1888. Amos Lein died September 6, 1923; Lewis Lein died February 26, 1927; Laurense Lein-Schenk died June 23, 1933; Isabel Lein-Kemp died October 7, 1933; Addis Lein-Jacobson died February 26, 1936. Two of the children are now living in Gordon, Nebraska; they are Clay Lein and Anna Lein-Johnson.

I remember Uncle Peter Lein as kind and considerate, jolly and a good mixer, with no bad habits, honest, and dependable.

Aunt Ingebor was kind and hospitable; she just couldn't do enough to make our visits pleasant. They were both good Christians. We had such good times visiting each other. When they sold the homestead, and bought another farm, near McCallsburg, where they had a large fine house, Belle told me they could all have the large house that wanted it, but she would rather be back in the old house so she could see us often. We all missed them; so when the family moved to Nebraska, we all felt so bad. We felt the loss keenly. We knew the family was an asset to any community; they were all thrifty, good citizens, so our loss was Nebraska's gain.

The three brothers, and their families, lived one half mile from our home to Uncle Peters', the half mile further to Uncle Oscar's.

We were all together so much, we just seemed like one big family. I have nothing but pleasant memories, of all the uncles and aunts by marriage and that they were always good and kind to us all.

I have visited the cousins in their homes in Nebraska and found the traditional Lein hospitality that left pleasant memories.

Addie Lein-Jacobson passed away February 26, 1936 at the age of 74 years. She took an active part in the church and things worthwhile in the community. We all liked and admired her. The same can be said of Laurence Lein-Shenk and her husband, Willis Schenk; also Isabel Lein-Kemp. Amos and Lewis were honorable and dependable; they were all good Christians and the world is better that they have lived.

(Signed) Isabel Lein Coates, 1935
I just entered Peter Lein in the "Keyword" search on Rootsweb/Ancestry. It gives a death date of 1906 for Peter, so maybe Arlen also can tell you where Peter & Isabel died. I'm still guessing it is Sheridan Co, Nebraska. I search all the cemeteries online there but didn't find any Lein. But some cem listings are not complete.
It appears Arlen would like some information from you about origins of Peter & Ingeborg, so I hope you can connect with him.
Bill Feller (aka..frogbait)

Thank you very much for your reply. Ingeborg or Isabel and her three sisters were born next door to me, on a small farm. They all went to US in 1860. Two are buried in at Our Saviour Kvinherred cemetery in Calamus, Olive Twp, Clinton Co, Iowa, that were Elsa and Anna, also their father is buried ther. Anna had two daughters and one son born in Norway, the son is buried next to his patents. See if there is a possibility to find where Ingeborg end up. Regards Magnar Hjelmeland.

Magnar,
I am not related at all, but lived near Kingsbury County, and my mother and other relatives came from there. I have many gravestone photos, but not of the DeSmet City Cemetery, where Peter & Isabel could possibly be buried. But it may also be likely they moved to northwest Nebraska with Ole & Louie.
First of all, let me say I believe, going by birth dates, I consider Ole A to be the Anders you mentioned(b 1874). Louie A (1900 census) Is the Alfred already born in 1879. I was able to track first a Lewis, then Ole, both in censuses in Sheridan County Nebraska. So I suspected they were the brothers. I followed Lewis's son Milford, who came across into South Dakota to be married. Finally, I found a family tree(Ancestry.com) that seems to confirm my suspicions, naming Milford's father Lewis, naming Lewis's parents as Peter A LEIN(note the spelling, not LIEN) and Isabel Ingeborg Anderson. The tree gives only their birth years(1833), but nothing about their deaths. ....According to this tree(Langfield), Lewis also had a daughter, who seems to more of a focus of the tree. Lois(1914-1996) married a William Thomas Scott of Sheridan Co, NE. They had a son & 2 daughter who are listed as "Private", so may still be living.
So If you want to find descendants of Lewis, It might be best to contact Langfield(who hasn't logged on Ancestry.com for over a year. The other option is to try to call some SCOTT people who live in Rushville, Gordon, or Chadron. It is very rural area, so not too many in Whitepages.com.
So I didn't actually find Peter & Isabel, but I hope this much helps. I am guessing you may be in Norway, so may find it difficult. If you need help, just ask.
Bill Feller

I found more information from the 1940 census.
Miles and Melva Taylor were in Stockton, CA from 1937 through at least the 1940 Census.
My mother was born in 1941.
So I figure they were there at least until she was born.

I am looking for information about Mary A Jones. She is enumerated in the 1880 Census residing in Kingsbury County with the Aaron Staly family. She is divorced with a 1 year old son Edwin R Jones. I believe that she later married Horace Gould. Can anyone tell me who Mary's husband before her divorce. I believe that Jones is her maiden name and that she had lived in Waseca County, Minnesota.

Now I see that there is a cemetery record for a Mary Crandall as well, but no stone. The record is similarly sparse in information, but says she died in 1914. And they are buried in adjacent graves, according to the records, so I think we can safely say that these are the Crandalls you were looking for.

It looks like you have one piece of the puzzle, and I have another. I am working my way through the Arlington, S.D. cemetery, and reached the stone of a David Crandall, a Civil War vet of Company K, 36th Wisconsin Infantry. My bet is that he's the David Crandall you're looking for. But the city cemetery records say he died in 1901. Unfortunately, they don't record a single other fact, just his name and the year of his death. I have posted the photo here, and on findagrave.com.

Hi -- I realize this is an old post (2002) but if you're still linked in here I'm interested in Nelson's in the Hetland area in the 1880s. First, I'm looking for info re Elizabeth nelson who married Lars Larson (son of Chris and Julia Larson) and who died in 1888. Lars is interred in the "Old Nordland" cemetery 1 mi east of the Badger corner on the south side of old US 14. Second, I'm looking for a Tina L. Nelson who, at age 19, according to Nordland Church records, died on 10-18-1888 and was also buried in the Old Nordland cemetery. There is no grave marker/stone in Old Nordland for her and in looking at the WPA records for neighboring cemeteries (new Nordland, Hetland, Whitewood), no marker at those sites either. Any info would be helpful. Thanks! Vern
