Hello, I am looking for Millage family researchers in South Dakota. I am a descendent of Joseph Millage (1812-1904). Joseph was born in New York and eventually moved to Lincoln County and then Union County and back. He may have moved with John and Clarissa Millage. We are hoping to find, among other things, parents for Joseph.

Looking for information regarding Edward J Van Woudenberg family of Fairview and Canton areas. He was born in 1891 in Holland as the youngest son of Hendrik and Maria Jeannetta Van Woudenberg of Rock Valley, Iowa. I believe his wife died in Canton on June 16, 1965. Can anyone confirm this? From the same information I have that Edward, who lived in the aforementioned areas, died by suicide in Colorado Springs just a year or two prior to his wife, at the age of 73. I believe they may have been married on 6/10/1914 in Fairview. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

"Vardøhus" is a fortress).

I have to correct my grammar, "nowadays" was originally written in two or three words - like "now a days", now the correct form is - "nowadays".

Have a splendid day.

Kjell-Einar Rokstad.

I have learned not to take census records as 'fact'. Even the one where my gggrandfather was the enumerator / census taker!

I have found glaring census mistakes in my own family, including a daughter being listed as "wife" to her widowed father, not to mention mixed-up ages, birth places, names and etc. Sometimes things are mangled so badly that it seems probable that a neighbor or a child gave the information!

Good luck in your research,

Beth
not related

Thanks for the reply.
It is a bit of a puzzler to me since all I know on the family is what I have been finding online and there is quite a bit of it online between Ancestry and Find A Grave. Seems like there isn't anyone researching this family that I've found so far.
According to Arthur's draft card his birthdate is 03 May 1900.
The only rationale I can think of for Nellie being on the 1900 census is a visitor in the home who was caring for the new mother must have given the info from a family bible not knowing that Nellie had died but why she didn't list Arthur is another guess!
Oh well--one of these days I'll find out!

City of last residence: Lenvig [might say Lewig]. Destination: Canton, South Dakota, joining friend [I can't tell who she is joining. There is no person listed with a Canton address; it might be ? Bold, Minneapolis, Minnesota, which doesn't make sense for a destination of Canton, South Dakota].

I can't find her in any later records.

Do you know whether there were other family members who emigrated to the U.S.?
The 1900 census was enumerated June 30th and July 2nd. In your family tree you have son Arthur's birth date as May of 1900.

The 1910 census lists six children with five still living. A History of South Dakota book found on Google Books has a biography of Joseph Shebal which states he has six children with five still living.

The 1900 census correctly states that mother Annie had had five children with four still living... I believe it was a mistake, albeit a large one, by whoever gave the enumerator the family information.

I have seen deceased family members listed as living, as 'part of the family', but this is the first time I've seen a deceased older child listed but a newborn not.

Beth
not related

Looking to fill in a few blanks on the family tree and ran into this little problem . . . Now I know that sometimes children were named for a deceased sibling but this makes no sense to me. How can she be on the 1900 census with the same birth date (6 Aug 1893) but with a death date of 1896 on her gravestone?
The only thing I can think of is there were twin girls born and the living girl was given the name of the deceased one? But there is no twins anywhere in the family lines!
Can't seem to locate any other Shebal's born on that date or a South Dakota death index that lists her.

South Dakota births
Nellie Louise Shebal
Birth Date: 6 Aug 1893 County: Lincoln
Father's Name: Joseph Shebal Mother's Name: Annie Viola Moscrip

1900 Census South Dakota Lincoln La Valley Delapre
Joseph Shebal Age: 41 Birth Date: Nov 1858 Birthplace: Austria Immigration Year: 1872
Relationship to head-of-house: Head Married: 1891
Annie Shebal Age: 30 Birth Date: Apr 1870 Birthplace: Wisconsin Living children: 4 Children born: 5
Edward Shebal Age: 8 Birth Date: Oct 1891 Birthplace: South Dakota Relationship to head-of-house: Son
Nellie Shebal Age: 6 Birth Date: Aug 1893 Birthplace: South Dakota Relationship to head-of-house: Daughter
William Shebal Age: 5 Birth Date: May 1895 Birthplace: South Dakota Relationship to head-of-house: Son
Robert Shebal Age: 2 Birth Date: Sep 1897 Birthplace: South Dakota Relationship to head-of-house: Son

On Find A Grave in the same plot as her parents
Nellie Louise Shebal
Birth: Aug. 6, 1893 South Dakota Death: 1896
Nellie was born to Joseph and Annie Viola (Moscrip) Shebal.
Burial: Pleasant View Cemetery, Harrisburg, Lincoln County, South Dakota

I would like to network with descendants of Johann “John” NIGGLI (Nickley, Nicollai etc. on census records) who married Louisa GEISER and died 11 Dec 1911 in either Turner or Minnehaha County; some descendants lived in Lincoln County. Some surnames that I believe are associated with this family are MILLER, STORCH, REICHELT, HOLTHE, SMITH, GUSTAFSON, ASCHOFF, FRANCE, GERRY and GUENTHER.

John NIGGLI was born in Switzerland and came with his parents and siblings to Cuyahoga County, Ohio. I am interested in when where the parents, John Sr. and Mary (STUDER) NIGGLI died.

My focus is Barbara NIGGLI, young John’s sister, who married William H. BESTOR in 1865 and died (when? where?) before 1879, when BESTOR remarried.
The "L" stands for Lewis but a grandson says the "L" stands for liar.

I have not found Omer in other census, and I do not belive he had any children with his first wife Iva Wineteer or his second wife. Minnie Rose Haffner. Hoping to locate an obit to confirm this for either Omer or Minnie. I have the death / burial permits and and no children are stated.

Did you know that Reaka is buried in Lennox? She is listed on findagrave.com along with other Bultena's and Bossman's.

You may want to try this; No idea if they do searches or if their data is in computers yet, just a thought. Sorry I can't help more, I rarely get to that area.

Lincoln County Register of Deeds
104 N Main Street Suite 130
Canton, SD 57013-1703

Phone: 605-764-5661
FAX: 605-764-5932
E-Mail: rod@lincolncountysd.org

I am looking for information on Lars and Louisa Anderson Larson. I believe Louisa was the sister of my Grandmother, Ida Sofia Anderson Knipfer. Louisa's birthdate is October 4 1865. Their residence was in Delapre, South Dakota but Louisa ended up passing away in Sioux Falls in 1951. My grandmother moved to Wisconsin, however I believe the rest of her siblings stayed in the Iowa, South Dakota area. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Reply: Skorheim Family Moe Lutheran Parish 125 years (1872-1997) Hudson, SD

Hi Jeanette! Boy! This is so weird! I've just started back on my genealogy research this last week and decided that I would get back into looking into the Skorheim family a bit more. (See attachments to this post)It seems that ancestry.com have added many marriage certificates and WWI Military Registrations in the last year or so. My mother's Aunt Gena Erickson who was born and raised in Norway Township, Lincoln Co. married Brady Blom and they lived in Sioux City, Iowa for many years and raised a family there. My Mom and Dad and I met with cousins from Sioux City 4 years ago in Canton, SD and we got together with other family members for genealogy fun. Brady Blom was the adopted son of John and Elsie Skorheim which is documented on the 1910 Census for Norway Township. Please contact me at parryltd4@aol.com. Thank you,Sue

I saw your post and I am also researching the Skorheim family.

The line I am working on is John Skorheim and Else Thompson and their daughter Inga M. Skorheim who married Newton Pippenger.

What line are you researching? I have two books that have the names of people you are researching:
History of Lincoln County South Dakota 1985
Moe Parish Pioneers 1982

If you don't have access to these books, I would be happy to get you the info.

Do you have any information about John and Else? I will share what information that I have on the Skorheims. Let me know what line you are working on.

Jeanette

My sympathy on the loss of your father and step-father. I have no information on either Pederson or Peterson. I do know that Holly and Cindy spent most of their married life in Vermillion, South Dakota but moved to California sometime during the last ten years. If you are interested in their address, it is possible that the church they attended in Vermillion might have it. My daughter lives in Vermillion (I'm from Topeka, KS) and I'm sure would be willing to check on that if you are interested.
Idell Dankert hidankert@sbcglobal.net
