Hi there, I just saw your message board. Florence L. Docken was my Aunt. The reason she was in an orphanage was because her Mother died in 1925, and I guess my grandfather just didn't think he could care for the six girls. Florence was the second oldest of 6 girls. Her sisters were Ruth, Betty, Shirley, June and Joyce. Aunt Florence's daughters, Joyce Meinders and Delores Graham both passed away with in months of eachother a couple years ago. You can sure email me if I can help with anymore questions, either here on ancesty or my email address is JCouch315@aol.com

You're welcome and that is all I have. I edited his obituary and now done with it, I hope you got a better copy than I did, I had trouble with the machine so if it isn't right let me know.
Also you will note the last S missing as I saw and copied it.

I saw two Hans Hansen's in the death records but none seem to be the right one as Evald's father died in 1953.
Thank you for all your lookups. I've photographed the Moxness headstones at Mt. Pleasant and actually had Peter's obit. I had previously looked for Lille Belle's and couldn't find an obit either. I've since moved from Sioux Falls. Thanks you again for all your help.

Hi,

I see he wasn't from Moksnes, but from a nearby settlement called "Moxnesmoe". He was born at Haabetsplads, but was living at Moxnesmoe by 1865. I see a lot of trees with Peter Moxness, but no one seems to have his birth record, so I will post it here:

Birth #141
Born 18 Jun 1862
Baptized 17 Aug 1862
Peter Andreas
Father: Tøllef Tørrissen
Mother: Lovise Lucie Danielsdatter
Residence: Haabetsplads, Nedre Stjørdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway

Kildeinformasjon: Nord-Trøndelag fylke, Nedre Stjørdal, Ministerialbok nr. 709A15 (1859-1870), Fødte og døpte 1862, side 56.
Permanent sidelenke:http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2464&i...

His name at birth is "Peter Andreas Tøllefsen", but he apparently chose a shortened form of his farm name when he emigrated to America.

Here is Peter with his parents and sister in the 1865 census for the farm "Moxnesmoe":

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I would like the obit of Evald Thomas Peter Hansen. I have quite a bit about him; he is my husband's great grandfather. I thought I had his obit and I don't. He died March 13 1975 in Hartford. He is buried at the Minnehaha Cemetery near Colton. I believe the Argus might have the obit because he was a firefighter in SF and retired out by Colton. His wife Lottie died July 15 1974. Thank you for any help with this.

Margaret was born in MO, at 16 was in KS and died in Denver in 1897. Her grandparents were was Mary Jane Cook and Samuel McMackin. Robert's father Joseph was born in IL but on the 1900 census is living by himself in Boulder CO without his children and working as a bookkeeper. Robert's brother was Fred Leroy James born 8 Jul 1888 place unknown/died 1905 place unknown. Family oral history has Margaret Lucas being 1/2 NA via mother and Robert being in NA school as a youth. I am unable to find Robert's parents on any census in 1890 nor Robert & brother on any 1900 census. Robert shows up with his great Uncle Adam W James in Reno, KS in 1910 at age 17 as white. Any info on this James family or relatives in Minnehaha County would be appreciated. Thanks!

Both are available on microfilm at the South Dakota State Archives in Pierre.

1) "The Colton Courier" Microfilm has 1928:July:5 through 1976:December:30.

2) "The Baltic-Crooks Booster" Microfilm has 1930:July:3 through 1947:February:20.

Gerry would you happen to have the undertaker that provided the service?

I had another obituary request for burials in the Colton Cemetery, so I called the Colton Library to ask the librarian what paper would carry the obituaries for that area, and she didn't know.
In addition to checking the Sioux Falls Public Library for the Argus Leader editions as Joe did, I also checked their film of the Sioux Falls Weekly News and the South Dakota State Forum, also a weekly publication. I did not find the obituary in either of those publications either. However, I'm not sure either covered Colton. I found other small communities, but not Colton. Despite not finding Colton in either publication, I checked two August dates for both publications that occurred after July 30, 1939. I'm not confident I've found the best sources for news from Colton of the time. So, I'll try to find something else.

I checked the South Dakota Death index and found that her death certificate number is 189462 if you'd like to contact the South Dakota officials for a record. The index shows she died in Yankton County as you indicate.

John R. "Ray" and Eugenie lived in Buffalo township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota (just outside of Sioux Falls) in the 1930 Federal Census. She was born in Alsace-Loraine as were her parents. Her "native" tongue was French. She immigrated to the U. S. in 1906 and was a naturalized citizen. However, she spoke English.

"Ray" was reported to be 45 and Eugenie 22 in the 1930 Census. I don't put a lot of faith in ages in the census as this suggests that Eugenie was born in 1888 while her grave stone shows she was born in 1886. However, the census recorded that she was the wife of "Ray"; and she was 22 when they were married. "Ray" was 25 when they were married. So, they were possibly married around 1900. The question to me becomes whether the 1906 immigration date is when she actually came to the U. S. as the question suggests or if it's the date she became a naturalized citizen.

The 1920 Census shows them living in Buffalo Township in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, again. Other than listing Eugenie's birthplace as France, there is little new. John was renting the farm where they lived. It doesn't list Eugenie's immigration. It lists ages of 33 and 36 which are more consistent with the information on their gravestones.

I don't know how much of this you have already, but thought I'd provide it in case you didn't.

If there's anything more I can do to help, let me know.

Gerry Ambroson
gerryambroson@midco.net

I can't find any record of Jessie Eloise Potter Dickson's death or obit. I'm sure she lived in Los Angeles when she died. I know that Samuel died in Oregon and was married to a Minnie Dickson. I've never found a record of a divorce between Sam and Jessie either. Just have to keep looking I guess.
