Hello. Actually I am krbaker061 's dad, Gene T. Smith. Your grandparents Kate (Todd) & John Henry Smith, were mine also. My dad, Francis (Sam) Smith & my mother, Evelyn (Dubois) Smith, was an older brother of your dad. They & my 2 oldest brother & sister moved to Utah where my dad took a job at Utah Copper Mine. My oldest sister, Frances, remembers that they brought John H. Smith with them. He lived with them until he died in Salt Lake City (actually Murray) in Aug. of 1942. I was born in Dec. of 1942, so I have to recollection of him. I believe that your dad visited my folks in Utah once or twice.
Our information is that Kate (Todd) Smith died during giving birth to your father, Gifford, in 1910. (I hope this isn't a shock to you.) After her death, John H. couldn't handle things, & he took to drinking & would actually leave the children alone to fend for themselves for weeks at a time.
Our information was that Gifford was raised by one of Kate's brother & his wife. From what you said, that may not be accurate. After seeing your post, my daughter checked & found that the brother probably would have been 19 at the time, so that age may also indicate that our information was not correct.
If you look-up Francis "Sam" Lloyd Smith in ancestry.com, you will see some of the connections that my daughter found on the family. She also put some of the few pictures pictures that we could find on-line also. My e-mail is" firstname.lastname@example.org
