Hi, Thomas is my Great Great Grandfather. His daughter, Lucille is my great grandmother and she lived with us when I was a kid. We were very close and I recently inherited her hope chest full of mementos and scrapbooks from her childhood in Parker. Lots of info there and photos too. Feel free to contact me.

From
EARLY HISTORY OF TURNER COUNTY, South Dakota
As the writer of the following saw and understood what was done beginning with the year 1869.
By T. R. Negus

"In the fall of 1872 there was to be a full set of officers elected for Turner County. The first was a mass convention held in Swan lake, and almost every voter in Turner County was there. Father Turner was nominated for the legislature over W. W. Aurner; Vale P. Thielman, county clerk and Register of Deeds; J. W. Shellen, County Judge and Treasurer; and Arthur Slade for Sheriff. J. H. Shurtleff, James A. Childs, and a Mr. Hammond from near Centerville were named for County Commissioners."

"The first 4th of July celebration was held in Swan Lake. J. J. McEntire was the speaker of the day. Major J. H. Shurtleff was Marshal. A few short speeches were made by others."

As I recall, the name Shurtleff also comes up in Sotddard's History of Turner County. (See also Shurtliff)

I find no information on Luther Adams.

Larry Turner
They are buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Viborg but no date is listed on their headstone. Their daughter Sophia Aalborg died in 1904 but I don't know the exact date for that either.

Sorry for the delay. I have a copy of the original names that homesteaded sections or quarter/half sections of Township 97N, Range 52W. I think this is Turner Township, only a part of the county. They have to be from approximately the 1870s, because several of the named individuals left before 1880. I can provide a .jpg copy if you email me directly at Citellus2@aol.com.

There is a book of these township homestead plats at the Turner County clerk's office. I only took a picture of the relevant one for my fanily when I visited a few years ago.

Larry Turner

There is no Methodist Church in Daneville Township. Just in Viborg itself. I live in Daneville township. There used to be country schools here and there but no churches in the middle of nowhere. Possibly used to be but that would be something an older lady or gentleman would know. Sorry. The township is currently from 452nd Ave to 458th Ave on 291st St and from 291st St to 297th St outside of Viborg, SD. I have some history but its mainly about my family. There is a Danish Heritage Museum in Viborg, SD.

My great-grandmother is Emma Morrison. I know about the brothers that died in the Missouri River. My father told me that story a few time growing up. Emma married David Nelson and had one child Ellwood, who married Gladys and they had two children, Gary and Gail. Gary is my father. I know there are or maybe now were other Morrison's in Viborg. I'd like to know more about my ancestry also.
Thank you for the reply to my search request.

There are several names I am searching for...and unfortunately, only approximate dates. Here is what I have:

Henry Christensen/Jennie Jensen - just before 1920
Niels Evan Jensen/Mariane or Marina Petersen - about 1891
Arthur Jensen/Carrie - about 1920
Anders C. Christensen/Andrea Petersen - bef 1881
Lowis Christensen/Clara - Sep 1916
Marcinne Leanna Christensen/Merrigan - prob early 1950's

There are many other names for which I do not have spouse's names and therefore do not have timelines for marriages. It was my hope to find a resource for the marriage records so that I could search them and not bother someone else with the over 40 names I have to search, especially with such limited information.

I would sincerely appreciate any help you could provide with regard to the names I have listed here. If I could find these, then perhaps it could lead to the records of the others.

Again, thank you for responding to my post and for offering your assistance.

Susan

Lester L. LONG jr., son of Lester L. and Inez M. LONG was born October 16, 1922 at Mitchell, S.D.
His boyhood years were spent in Parker, where he attended the Presbyterian Sunday School and became a member of the church on October 6, 1935.
He graduated from Parker High School in 1940. Lester's interest was in music and during his four years of high school he participated in musical activities.
He entered State College in Brookings in 1940 and the following year attended Yankton College.
On October 19, 1942, he was united in marriage to Ruth Joyce GRESS of Devils Lake, North Dakota. A son Jonny Allen, was born to this union.
Lester enlisted on October 23, 1942 at Grand Forks, North Dakota in the army signal corps. After basic taining at Camp Kohler, California, he was assigned to the Western Signal Corps School at Davis, California for technical training.
Following a brief furlough at Parker in April 1944, he was sent overseas with the 99th Signal Battalion, first to New Guinea and in October of that year to Leyte Island. Lester was killed in action on November 16, 1944 while on duty as a radio operator.
He received Christian burial rites and interment in the temporary military cemetery at Carigara, Leyte, P.I.
Survivors are his widow (now Mrs. William KUHN) and son Jonny Allen, age 5 of Sioux City, Iowa and his parents.
Final interment with military honors will be on February 22, 1949 in Rose Hill Cemetery, Parker, South Dakota.

I am not related, but my great-grandmother Alena Sletten Benson kept the memorial for his funeral. She wrote on the memorial: "I helped Mrs. Long with her work and stayed lot with there son at time when Mrs wanted to go places. So I really miss him too."

I am trying to find marriage data in Viborg for Jensen/Petersen and Christensen families. I know this is no surprise since this are very common family names, but I just am at a loss as to where to search online. Can anyone help me find a source? Thank you very much for your help!!

Re: your inquiry about Leonard Swan's parents. Sorry to say, I have no information on how they died. The line of Swans that I have researched is not one of my direct lines. Lorenzo (DOB 1863) was a nephew of my great grandmother, Susan Ann SWAN KOPFF. The SWANs were from March, Cambridgeshire, England and immigrated to Wisconsin in the 1840's. Susan's brother, Alfred and family, along with his mother, Sarah, went to Turner County, SD and homesteaded. Alfred had 6 children altogether, including Lorenzo. I know that Lorenzo had 2 children... Leonard and Lela. I have not researched farther than that. I do know that Leonard had 3 children, one of which lived a few miles from me in Minnesota---Cletus Swan. However, I never met him.

I do have more information on some of the SWANs from the 1800s if you are interested. Some of my information came from a researcher by the name of Lisa Axt from Ohio. I do not have a current email for her. Other info came through rootsweb, census records, obits from WI and land records.

Claudia from MN
