Surnames: O'Rielly, Corey, Scanlon, Pederson, Guenzel
George D. O'Rielly is my Great Grandpa. My grandmother was Mary O'Rielly and married Clifford Corey. Most of the family lived in Beresford SD on the same block. My mother "Little Mary" is 80 and knows all the family history. There are three houses next door on South 4th Street ending on the corner of West Oak Street (North side of the street) just behind what is now the Recycle Center which used to be John Deer before they moved out by I29. The house on the corner was the Guenzel house which the Sink Family bought. The middle house built in the early 70s was the Corey house the O'Rielly house is third on the block. Before Clifford and Mary Corey built the house in the middle 1970ish the two houses had the first intercom system so the ladies could talk to each other. They looked just like the old fashioned crank phones but no dials or buttons. They would crank the intercom and it would buzz in the other house. There was a big flower garden in the middle with some vegetables as well. You will notice they all lived next to each other in life and are buried next to each other. When I was younger we would go into Vermillion to meet up with Joe Reedy who owned the coast to coast hardware store in town. He was a shirt tail cousin my mom and him would tell me. Mildred O'Reilly was my Great Aunt who never married. Both Ladies taught school for many, many years. Mildred went to school at Aberdeen Teachers College, Mary her sister went to USD and Mary Corey now Peterson went to USD. The Corey side (William of Portsmouth) came to the US in 1630s are one of First Families. Eight ancestors were passengers on the Mayflower. The moved from Road Island to Vermont to New York, to Wisconsin, to Iowa, then to South Dakota at Went near Ft. Pierre on the Bad River. Mary O’Rielly was 21 a young one room school house teacher and a young Rancher Clifford Corey was bet by his friends to ask her out on a date. They were married three weeks later and the Mary wore a purple wedding dress. During the Depression my Grandfather lost his 5,000 acre ranch due to the Government coming out and shooting all his cattle. The Government could not afford the feed to go to the cattle and left my grandfather without any lively hood. So they moved to Beresford to be with the O'Rielly and Guenzel side of the family. Mary Corey (O’Rielly) continued to teach in Beresford and I recall most of the adults in Beresford all knew my grandmother because she had been their teacher. My mother recalls Great Uncle William O'Rielly as a child. She says he was very old but a very nice man and loved the grand children. Mildred taught in Sioux Falls until she retired. We have many family photos including on of the house in Smith Falls Canada. George was born the neighboring town of Perth Canada. On ancestry I have uploaded the census data and land data under the Peterson Family Tree
