Hi Syd,

I saw this post by you, and I know it's from 2009, so hopefully you see this :) I've been working on my family
genealogy. Through my dad's side (Carrieres), I traced my line to Celina Volin, daughter of Louis Volin and Adrienne Volin, the two cousins. Celina married Harmisdass Carrieres. These two were my great great grandparents. I have found some information on Louis Volin's father,Charles Valin's line, but I'm not really sure if it's correct. I haven't been able to reach France yet. I was wondering if you could share the information you have with me. I'd really really appreciate it! Thanks! My email is mccarrieres@yahoo.com

Kaela

Barbara, happy to see your message here. We're also researching the Abraham > Gershom Vanderhule family. We were wondering if your sister's book (your grandfather's) lists all of Abraham's children.

There is probably information we could share. I have Abraham's father as Henry, baptized in the Dutch Church, New York (city) in 1728. Then we have a land record of his in Monmouth County, NJ (there are probably others, if we could find them), and we think he died not long after 1804.

How far back does your sister's book go?

Thanks,
Liz

Have found some add'l info. George W. Vanderhule. He was married to Matilda L. Bramble in 1860. She was born in May 1840 in Vermont and grew up on a farm with a large family--she was one of 7 siblings. George W. Vanderhule's parents were Gersham and Lavina(Meade) Vanderhule. I can do some add'l research if you'd still like to find out where they're buried, but I'm fairly certain Matilda was buried in South Dakota.

On Sept. 13, 1871 and Oct. 18, 1871, George W. Vanderhule of Sioux City, Iowa with Henry L. Brooks of Sioux City, Iowa, testified under oath that both knew Charles H. Bostwick, of that city, and that they have known him for a long time. Also, it was true that the disability he incurred during the war made it difficult for him to work, etc. All of this was for an increase in pension. Since Henry L. Brooks was Charles' brother-in-law I was hoping there was some family connection between George W. Vanderhule and and Charles. Charles was from Vermont as was his wife and were from the same county as Matilda Vanderhule. The more I think about it I imagine it was just a coincidence about the place of birth and that Vanderhule was probably Charles' doctor. Although no where in the pension application does it mention that he is a physician. Names in the family that might be of interest - AMIDON, BROOKS, LAKE, HARDING, BOSTWICK. Thank you for your response.

I am Barbara Vanderhule-Rocco. I have been doing extensive family research, tracing the Vanderhules all over the country, from NY, PA, Mass., South Dakota,Idaho, Iowa, Montana, and California. It's been an interesting journey and I'm not finished. my sister has a little black book that my grandfather gave her which lists the history of the Vanderhules from the 1700s. That has been very helpful as well. It seems to me that all of the Vanderhules in the U.S. are related. I believe the first one to come here from Holland was Hendrick Vanderhule in the 1600s. He isn't in the book-it doesn't go back that far. The book starts with Abram Vanderhule. There are records from ancestry.com of Abram and Hendrick Vanderhule(brothers) serving in the Revolutionary War--it blows my mind. I have gained a ton of information, but haven't yet put all of the pieces together. Are you related to the Vanderhules?

My husband is a Sicard so he is related to Mary.

I find genealogy so very interesting. I spend a lot of time trying to get obits etc. Do you know about Find A Grave? All cemeteries are defined and I have created a memorial for Donald Dale Buckman. You can look at it.
Yes, I am a distant relative. Henry Buckman was the first Buckman to arrive in the Gayville area and he had a brother also named Henry from Nora Springs, Iowa that was my Great Grandfather. I have quite a bit of information on the Buckmans. Do you have any old pictures, stories etc?
Henry lived in Iowa before going to South Dakota and had numerous brothers and sisters who also came over from Germany.
Henry had 3 wifes and Donald was from Henry's son Emory.
Emory's mother was killed by lighting while he was in a high chair close by.

Donna E. Munck, age 84 of Yankton, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Center in Canton, SD.

A Memorial Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2012 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Yankton with Father Jim Pearson officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be in the Yankton Cemetery.

Visitations will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with the family present from 5-7 p.m. and a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Donna Gusarson Munck, wife, mother, teacher, volunteer and Alzheimers fighter tossed off the bonds of that cruel disease Tuesday, March 13, and moved onto her new life with Christ. Born the third daughter of Carl Oscar and Edith Gusarson August 27, 1927 in Sioux Falls, her first major trip was to meet her maternal grandparents in Umea, Sweden at age two. Donna’s family life changed with the death of her father when she was nine, and the family, now including a younger brother, moved to Orange County, California. A short time later, the family returned to Brandon- Sioux Falls, where Donna graduated from Washington High School and then Augustana College.

At Augustana, Donna met her future husband, James W. Munck. After Jim’s Army service, the couple moved to Evanston, Illinois where Donna worked in a law office while Jim attended Seabury Western Theological Seminary. Upon his graduation, the couple returned to South Dakota.

After the birth of their three daughters, Donna’s life revolved around service as a Girl Scout Leader, activity with Christ Church choir and altar guild and PEO. Donna returned to school, completing work at Yankton College and secured her teaching certificate. She taught fourth grade at Webster Elementary School for 22 years, delighting in the achievements of students when they discovered the love of reading or the thrill of exploration during Gavins Point field trips. Donna shared her love of music, reading and baking with her children.

Donna lost her soul-mate when Jim died in 1976. Her children, church and teaching kept her going — she bought a home, received her Master Degree in Education from the University of South Dakota, and discovered the joy of gardening.

Her parents and younger brother Dean, her husband, Jim, and her oldest sister Gertrude all preceded Donna in death.

She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Peterson, Florida and daughters Tanya (Rick) Ask, Helena, Montana; Edith (Larry) Nelson, Canton, South Dakota; and Martha (Allen) Potts, Omaha, Nebraska. Donna is also survived by eight grandchildren: Lt. James (MaryJane) Ask, Jacksonville, Florida; Ben (Aimee) Ask, Missoula, Montana; Signe Ask (Dana Driggs) Helena, Montana; 1st Lt. Samuel Nelson, Ft. She is also survived by her three special sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews, her Christ Church family and special Yankton friends.

Her family wishes to thank the Christ Church family, the staff at Majestic Bluffs, Behavior Center in Sioux Falls and the staff of Canton Good Samaritan for their care and support of Donna during her illness.
Looking for anyone who knew Emilija Young (sometimes called Emily), who was originally from Latvia. She was married to Jarvis Young (known as Buck or Jerry) and they lived in Yankton. Jarvis worked at Sacred Heart Hospital and Emilija worked possibly at Mount Marty College. This would be in the 1950s. Jarvis died in 1960, but I believe Emilija continued to live and work in Yankton in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. She passed away in 1999.

I am a relative of Jarvis' and have Emilija's photo albums with some photos of her friends, nursing students at Mount Marty, and some of the nuns as well. I would like to return some of these pictures to the families of her friends as Emilija had no family of her own to pass these down to.

Anyone with any information of Emilija or Jarvis Young, please contact me!

Breana Kennedy

Rasmus Hansen and Family, Yankton

Hi,

I’m looking for any information on my great-grandparents, Rasmus Hansen, born around 1862 in Denmark, and his wife, Margreta Jorgenson, also born in Denmark around 1866. They lived in or around Yankton, South Dakota, and had several children:

John Richard Hansen 1887 – 1959
William Ingeval Hansen 1888
Fred Leonard Hansen 1890
Agnes Matilda Hansen 1893
Charley L Hansen 1894
Mabel Louise Hansen 1897
Clara Jessie Hansen 1899
Elmer Ervin Hansen 1901

My great-grandfather was John Richard Hansen, who at some point after 1910 moved to Minnesota. He used several different names over his life, including John Hansen, Chester Hansen, Chester John Hansen Bernard, Chester Bernard, Chester Barnard, and possibly more. I know he was married many times, and had several children, three of whom were named Marie, Connie, and Jack, but because he used different names, I can only definitely identify my grandfather, Richard Barnard, and his brother, Arthur Bernard.

Any information on this family or why my grandfather may have changed his name would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Samantha
Hi! Yes, Rasmus was born in Denmark. I believe his parents were Hans Larsen and Inger Marie Jenson. Rasmus came to the US in about 1882/1883. I don't know why he picked Yankton exactly, but he married my grandmother and by 1900 they were living there with a bunch of kids. He does have a son named Fred. That's about the extent of my knowledge!

This is a long shot but I have to respond. My grandfather, Fred Hansen, lived with some people by the name of Madsen near Yankton. He had an uncle by the name of Rasmus Hansen. He was born in Denmark but I do not know if he came to the US. I always wondered why my grandpa ended up in Yankton from Minneapolis when he was young. His mother had died in Denmark and his father came to Minneapolis in 1893. In 1895 he sent for the four children. The oldest girl died at the age of 18 so my great grandfather farmed the remining children out to Danish famlies. My grandpa and a sister went to Yankton and a sister went to Windom, MN. There might be a match here. But, of course, every other male in Denmark was named Hans so there are a lot of Hansen's. Do you have any more information about your Rasmus? Was he Danish? We would love if you were in our family.

Yes, that's one of only two mentions we know of.

The Fricks are his sister Magdalena and her husband. He's 39 in 1900 so we see a birth of Mar, 1861 on the form.

He later shows up in our second instance mentioned in his brothers obituary in Oct. 1919. He is mentioned as "brother Frank of Yankton, SD".

There is a Frank Willman, born in Iowa in 1861, living in Yankton in 1900. He is a servant for a family named Frick. No sign of Frank in the census since then, not even the SD state censuses.

We don't have a lot. A census in 1900 shows him as being born in March, 1861. His family was living in Postville Iowa at the time. So, best guess is Postville, IA March 1861.

Thanks for the reply!

Barbara,

I'm trying to determine how my Pechan family are related to any South Dakota Pechan's. My mom has said that many years ago, someone gave her mom a book of information and that she was invited to a family reunion of sorts by some Pechan's from South Dakota. I am in the line of Simon Pechan who married Katherina Apfeld, and their son Bernard Pechan married Lavina Kissinger. Their adopted son Harold (Sickles) Pechan married Ben's son Mathias's daughter Caroline. Harold and Caroline were my grandparents. I have never found a link to the "South Dakota Pechan's" in my research. I was wondering if possibly Joseph and Simon were related. I do have the information from Simon's death certificate saying his father's name was Joseph, but it would not be this Joseph. Simon was born in 1818, but I was wondering if maybe they were brother's or cousins or something along those lines. Any information would be appreciated. SOrry I did not see this reply until I was searching the message boards tonight to see if there was anything new.

I couldn't find a previous marriage record for her.

Do you know where Orville is, or was, at any point after the marriage? That's the last record I have found for him. The other Orville Amundsons don't seem to match up, either with the birthdate or middle initial. Do you know if he and Eleanor stayed married?

Barbara
