It looks like Lela wasn't sure where she was born. It looks like she thought N Dakota in 1910 & 1920 census, then changed to SD. Also, she does not seem sure where her mother was born, going from Ireland to Minn to Wisconsin in successive censuses. But suppose she learned something as she got older, and settled with Wisconsin(1940 census doesn't give her mother's birthplace).
With that last idea, look up SELA Kennedy in MN in 1900. Her father was a railroad man, from Ireland, mother from WI. The RR work would account for them moving.A history of Michael Kennedy's employer might tell you where he would have been on that rail line in the Dakotas.
