Mitchum Family

I am searching for information about the Lewis Franklin Mitchum family. They lived in Carroll/Gibson County TN 1800 - 1900. Specifically, I am trying to identify the children of Lewis Franklin Mitchum and his wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Hurt. My grandfather was a member of this family, or of the next generation. I think his name was Charles H. Mitchum. Here lately, I have been told that his name was more probably Harvey...Perhaps Charles Harvey??? I am wondering if Charles' father could be Harvey?? Was Harvey a son of Lewis Franklin? He was said to be born about 1860 in Milan, TN. I would appreciate any information I could receive, or if anyone has an idea where I might find specific information, I would like to hear from you. My email address is brummett@dynasty.net I was Virginia Ruth Mitchum, daughter of Lester Charles Mitchum who was a descendent of Robert Mitchum b.1776 VA., who was the father of Lewis Franklin Mitchum. Thanks much!! Ruth
My grandfather, James George Fowler, (as I was told) is suppose to be buried in Madison Tennessee. I have no idea on how to further search for him or any records about him. I have tried the SSDI search, Ancestry.com searches, anything i can think of to search, I have. There is no record of this man. Is there anyone who can tell me how to find out for sure if he is buried in Tennessee. He died around 1965-1967. He was first married to Sue Nelson from Tallassee, AL. Then they divorced and he moved to TN, met a lady and had at least 3 daughters. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time & help,
Dawn D.

Researching my gggg-grandfather, ARTHUR PATTERSON, who resided in Carroll County, TN from the 1820's through the 1840's. I happened across the Browning Museum site, and in the museum's "genealogy books" section, I noticed a book entitled:

THE PATTERSON'S OF CARROLL COUNTY, TENNESEE
Stephanie Tayloe, 1998.

Query: I have been unable to locate a copy of this book ANYWHERE. Could someone there direct me to a source, or if not, possibly assist by taking a look in the museum's copy?

I am particularly interested in any data on Arthur's father. I have done some research and believe he may be William Patterson, of Lincoln County, NC (Arthur's birthplace c.1791).

William Patterson was married c. 1785 to ANN (maiden name Alexander) (husband 1=John CUNNINGHAM married 1782) (husband 2=William PATTERSON married c.1785) (husband 3=James HOLMES married c.1800) (husband 4=James CRAGE married 1814).

Query: ANN CRAGE(craig)'s will is on file in Carroll County Will Book "A" (1822-1864) page 139. Is it possible to find a date as to when her will was executed?

I'd greatly appreciate any assistance in this matter.

Jacob Smothers & Delila Uptigrove in Carroll Co., TN & Franklin Co., IL

I have information on the Delilah Uptigrove Smothers widow of Jacob Smothers from Carroll Co., TN who lived in Franklin Co., IL and can be found in the 1870 Census living in Benton, IL on Page #5 is found Delila Smothers age 42 b. TN (a daughter of Elijah Uptigrove & Lydia Collins/Collings), son William age 21(named for Delila's brother William Uptigrove/Uptegrove), son Jacob age 17 (named for his father Jacob), Nancy B (?), and Mary F (named for Delila's sister Mary Uptigrove Robinson/Robison/Robertson from Carroll Co., TN). Many genealogists have Delila as a Pinkston in their research because there is a Pinkston female listed in her household in a later (after 1850) census. This could be her niece (a daughter of Delila’s sister Hannah Uptigrove who married a Pinkston) or Delila may have been married to a Pinkston before she married Jacob Smothers. I have Delila’s father Elijah Uptegrove’s land division records after his death that name her as a daughter along with all his children and several of his grandchildren. Elijah’s widow Lydia Collins Uptegrove/Uptigrove is also mentioned. These records can be found at the Gordon Browning Museum in Carroll Co., TN. Jere Cox is the curator there and some of his records are online from a Carroll Co., TN website.
I would like to know what proof there is to substantiate that Delila was a Pinkston before she married Jacob Smothers. I want to know whether Delila was married to a Pinkston 1st or if her maiden name was Pinkston rather than Uptigrove/Uptegrove. There are so many researchers who have her as Delila Pinkston and I want to hear about where their records can prove that. I also believe that because of the similarity of the names of Delila and Jacob’s children that she is more an Uptigrove than a Pinkston.
There are at least 2 other Smothers families on this page listed as neighbors. One is probably a brother in law to Delila and the other is a J.W. Smothers who might be another son of Delilah and her late husband Jacob Smothers.
In the Carroll Co., TN Census for Dec 1850 in the 18th district, Household #2070 is listed Jacob Smothers b TN, age 20-9 (?), Wife Delila age 23 born TN, daughter Lydia E. age 4 born TN (is named for Delila's mother Lydia Collins Uptigrove), son William F., age ?, born TN (possibly F is for Franklin named after Delila's brother's William & Nathaniel Franklin Uptigrove), and daughter Ellin, age? (It’s hard to read all birth dates in my census reports so check these dates). Also in this census in household #2067 for Robertson is Delila's sister Mary Uptigrove and husband Thomas.
I have looked at the 1860 Franklin Co., IL Census and found some interesting possibilities of connections to this family of Delila's on page #375 with the post office as Benton. Look in Houshold # 200, 201 both with Smothers, 202 has a Pinkston, with an elderly Jacob Smothers age 72 would put his birth date as 1788 in N.C. and a Nancy Smothers (probably his wife), age 73, who is a seamstress also born in N.C. Chances are the Pinkston mans wife one Nancy age 31 born in TN who is also a seamstress is probably a daughter of Jacob and Nancy Smothers.
Some things to consider are
1. The elderly Jacob Smothers is probably Delila's father-in-law. Jacob and Nancy are probably the parents to Jacob Smothers (born btw 1821-30 in TN) found in the 1850 Carroll Co., TN Census.
2. The Pinkston name is tied to both the Uptigrove/Updegrove & Smothers families. Delila's sister Hannah (both daughters of Elijah & Lydia Collins/Collings UPTEGROVE) married a Pinkston. Lydia Collins brother Elisha Collins married Elijah's sister Hannah Uptegrove. In other words a brother and sister Uptegrove married a brother and sister Collins. Now the really confusing part is that Elijah and Lydia Uptegrove had children named: Elizabeth (who married a Diggs), William (who married Elizabeth Chambers), Delila (who married Jacob Smothers), Nathaniel Franklin (who is my line married (1) Nancy Kee (2) Martha Fauldin (my line is this wife), Hannah, Susan, Mary (married (1) Thomas Robertson (2)?), Elijah Jr. who was born June 1, 1840 in IL (who married Adaline Smith and she was widowed when he died in Paducah, KY during the Civil War conflict of the Battle at Ft. Anderson. He is buried at the Mounds City National Cemetery in Pulaski Co., IL.).
3. I think it is in the 1850 or 60 Carroll Co., TN Census where most of the children are listed and the last name is one Elisha Uptigrove who for many years was thought to be a son of Elijah & Lydia but is a grandson. His father and mother (William) were dead already and his grandparents took him in.

I have tried to do all of this post from census records but I do have all copies of the papers from Carroll Co., TN if anyone should like to have copies I can email them. I also have military papers from 3 of the Uptigrove men who were all in the Civil War.
1850 & 60 & 1870 census lookup for King family

Hello, Need some help with a lookup on the King families in Carroll co TN for 1850-60 & 70.

I have found census index of 11 of them in 1850 there- my line was from Chesley King age 25 & Catherine (Keeling) but I didn't find out where he listed his birth state?
I'm now trying to sort out his brothers too to find out which ones moved with him- the index listing in 1850 listed several from NC & the others were from TN.
I'd like to compare the similiar names pasted down in the family there & find out est birth years on some of the kids.

I would also like to get the address for the court house to write for a few of the King wills- Chesley d. 1863, & William P. died July 8 1925. Do you know what they charge for copies there?

& I wonder if your Genealogy Society there has access to the newspaper obits collected from the 1925's? I would be happy to pay a search fee & for copies from them to the Society.

I know William P. & wife Martha Parish & Chesley were buried at Mt. Comfort Cemetery. Chesley's wife Catherine or Katy Keeling King remarried to David Adams but I don't know what year.
I have a copy of the History book on Carroll co Tn with an article on my King family lines included....not sure who submitted the article but have learned they have the wrong military listing on my Wm Presley King- It says he served in the 55th Reg..but that was a Confederate unit &
my GG Wm.P. King Served in Co I, 7th Tn Cav.- I just dug out his pension papers to make some copies for distant cousins & thought I should check on the census records for the county.

Thanks so much for any help on the census records on the King family there. Treasure the help & wish you many Happy Trails on all your researching too.
Kim Ralston Dresser
Okla

I'm trying to find out who my grandfather's father was. His name was John Sam Willie. He was born to Larcenia Mary Dodd in 1889. Larcenia's parents were Samuel Finch Dodd and Sariah Jane Jordan of Carroll County. Larcenia married Mathew (or Melvin) Rust in about 1900. Can anyone find a marriage to a last name Willie prior to that time?

George Cox (b. TN, 1810 - 1830, + or -)

Possible Carroll County, TN connection:

I recently retrieved my great grandfather's DC from the State of Texas. He was James Newton Cox, b. TN on 28 Nov 1851; d. Floresville, Wilson, TX on 01 May 1929. Married (abt 1876, in Fannin, TX) to Louisa Mildred Thomason, b. 1848 in AR; four children, all sons (my grand-dad was their 3rd child).

On James Newton's DC, it is indicated that his (James N.'s) father was "George Cox, b. TN." The Informant on the DC was Berry A. Cox, James & Lou M. Cox's eldest son.

Assuming that he (George) was between 20 and 40 when James was born, with a few years either way, I am seeking a George Cox family somewhere in Tennessee, with the head of household born (approximately) between 1810 and 1830, in Tennessee.

It's a big state, and I presently have no idea exactly where this family would be during this time period (a search of the appropriate Censuses has not yet turned up such a family), but many of the Thomasons at this time were from West Tennessee -- Henry and Carroll counties, mostly -- so I tend to "favor" that grand division of the state as the most likely place for the George Cox family around the time that James Newton was born (1851).

Appreciate any leads, and best regards,

Steve Cox
Knoxville, TN

His parents were Samuel Younger and Catherine Elizabeth Carter. Samuel Younger had a brother named Newt Younger, and Samuel's father or grandfather had a land grant in Carroll Co. Robert Younger (son of Samuel) had at least ten brothers. Some of siblings were Harry, Charles (past away in WWI), Allen, Mary, Elizabeth, and a possible Roger Jr. Any help would be a blessing! I cannot find any records on Robert! Please reply to:
Rebecca Reekstin
yellow_maple01@hotmail.com

John J. MORRIS family VA >> Carrol Co, TN ~1850s?

I would be pleased to correspond with anyone who has information about the antecendents and descendants of John J. MORRIS (~1831 - 1900/1910) and Mary ???(~1832-1870/1880; both born in VA). They appear for the first time in Carroll County in the 1860 census and had children James, Sarah C., Joseph, Lucy, Charlie, & John . Mary died before the 1880 census and John remarried Sarah ???--had son Emit/Emmit.

I have a large family photo prob. 1900-1910 showing ~3 generations from JJ to probably grandchildren in Morris and Gill families. I have names for the pictures but can't find any of the Morris side (Johnnie & Annie, sons John Albert & Paul), Annie (widow Charlie) & daughter Sarah) in relevant census years. Gill family connection possibly through JJ MORRIS niece Liza/Lizzer/Eliza A Morris but can't connect her (niece is ID in 1880 census living with JJ & Sarah).

My connection? My ggrandmother Sarah Katherine / Kate Morris (1856-1930s) m. Thomas Sumerfield Montgomery (1855 NC-1900 TN) in 1882 in McLemoresville (although marriage isn't in available database). TS died young and Kate moved her family to husband's relatives in Texas.

Thanks in advance.

Kate McCain

I am researching my great-great grandfather, John Fowler and my great-great grandmother, Josephine Sherwood Fowler. Josephine was born in Carroll County in 1861. Her father was John Sherwood, her mother's name is unknown. Her father was born in Illinois and her mother was born in North Carolina. According to census reports John was born in Tennessee and his mother and father were born in Tennessee. John Fowler and Josephine were married in Carroll County in April of 1880. They had 3 boys, Luther, William Priestly, Earnest. My great grandfather was Luther. There was a James Turner Fowler who lived in Hollow Rock, TN. He was always called "Uncle Jim". I am trying to connect him with John Fowler. "Uncle Jim" lived to be 100 years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These 2 children are listed in the household of Benjamin Hays on the 1860 Finley, Webster, Missouri Census as Mary A. V. Argo age 7 and Victorine C. Argo age 5. Both born in Tenn. They are not in Benjamin's household in the 1870 census. In the 1850 census Benjamin Hays and family were living in District 2, Carroll County, Tenn., but no Argos in the household. Benjamin was born in SC in 1807.
Does anyone know who these children are and if there is a connection to the Hays family?

Parents of Stephen C. Smith born 1832

I am having trouble finding the parents of my great great grandfather Stephen C. Smith. I know that he was born September 9, 1832 and died February 16, 1890 in White County, Garner, Arkansas. I have him in the Carroll County Census in 1860 and 1870. He married Samantha Jane Bilbrey on August 24, 1856 and they had 8 children James Henry, Mary, John Calvin, George W., Martha, Andrew, Orpha and Dora. In 1850 there is a Stephen C. Smith age 18 listed with the William and Harriet McMakin family. Since I am having trouble I am assuming he was an orphan. There was also a William Smith listed with a Steel family age 16, which I am speculating is a brother. Can anyone help?

Seeking information on the ancestry of William C. Mitchell and wife Nancy. William was born abt 1812 in Tennessee and came to Carroll County circa 1840. He and his wife, Nancy, lived on a farm adjacent to William and Mary Holmes near the Roans Creek Church area. The family was enumerated on the 1850 US Census, Dist 13, Carroll County, Tennessee. They appear again on the 1860 census, but without William. The farm was sold in 1867 and the family split, most of the boys, with the exception of Joseph R. Mitchell who stayed in Carroll Co., went to Mississippi. Some of the girls stayed in Carroll County as well. I have not been able to determine what happened to the mother, Nancy. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Bob Mitchell
