Looking for relatives and or ancestors by the surname of Toliver or Taliaferro

I am looking for relatives or ancestors with the surname of Toliver or Taliaferro. According to an aunt of mine, my grandfather's people on my father's side of the family were brought over from the Samoan Islands as indentured slaves or freed slaves from the Samoan Islands and settled in Tennessee (I guess prior to 1844).

My direct ancestor was James Newton Hampton, b. about 1837, believed to be son of a J. Hampton listed in 1850 Carroll County census. I have ancestry info. on a James Hampton (who was also listed in that census), & his father Nolan, but do not know how they are connected to J. Hampton and his son James N. James Newton ended up in Bexar County, TX by 1860. Can anyone make connections?

I am more than willing to share my genealogical information,
However I have been trying for 30 years to prove the father of my Daniel Pate b abt 1812 in NC. He married Susannah Graham. Family lore says his father was Stephen Pate and his mother's maiden name was Lee. I have not been able to verify that. There is a Pate DNA Project and we have two straight line men who have given their DNA. So far the DNA points to Thoroughgood Pate, but does not tell us which son we are through. Every one is welcome to use the data stored in the Pate L Archives. I wish I had something to share but I don't.

Bond Family in Carroll County

I am trying to trace back the Bond side of my family. My GGF was Jesse Oliver Bond, born in Buena Vista, Carroll County, TN b. 15 Sep 1886. He married a Sallie (Sarah?) born abt 1887 in TN. They later moved to Oklahoma where my GF Otto Bond was born and then to Pemiscot County Missouri. Going further back I believe that Jesse O. Bond's father was Robert Franklin Bond b. Jan 1857 in TN. He married a Sally E. (Sarah E Blatney?) where they lived in Carroll County until his death in 1906. I believe his fathers name is a John Bond b. 1834, married to a Nancy J. b. 1832 in North Carolina. The problem is there is also a Robt F. Bond that had two children (James A. and Nancy E.) with no mother listed. Attempting to confirm that this is the same Robt Bond, if my trail back to John Bond is correct, and the last names of their wives. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My father's name is Charles Allen Mitchum. Of course I have Charles harvey and sometimes there is a Watson in there too. More than likely we are related somehow. I am interested in finding out how.

I have been trying to find out who Dave Spain's parents were. I found an 1860 census record that has David S. Spain age 13 along with 6 other children and parents Joseph Spain and Sarah B. Spain ages 36 and 32. If Robert Lee was born in 1864, then David was 17. I have a death date for Dave as 2/4/1869 (not sourced) and a census from 1870 that has Robert Lee in the household of Dr. James Clark. He is 6 and Mary is 8. Can you confirm any of this?

Brenda: If I remember correctly,Alonzo is my uncle, by marriage, Stacy Spain's brother. Uncle Stacy is my uncle not be blood kin but because he married my mother's sister. Her name was Laverne Woods. Uncle Stacy always referred to my grandfather, Robert Lee Spain, as Cousin Bob. If he was not uncle Stacy's brother, then his father. It has been a long time since Daddy explained the relationship between Alonzo and Uncle Stacy. You are correct about Jimmy Dean buying the store. Don
Polly and Judy, My husband, Don is actually the one who responded to Polly and I am the one who does the research. I have been working on it about 3 years since his cousin, Margaret Elizabeth sent me a copy of a letter written in 1838 by one of the first McAlexanders to settle in Carroll County. They came from Virginia and she was writing to a son asking him to join them and actually giving him directions and advice about the trip. That gave me the bug. I was happy to get confirmation of the info I had about Dave's family being almost wiped out in an epidemic. I had heard it was yellow fever. I think his sister Patty told me that. Anyway, I can't go back any farther than Dave. I found a Joseph and Sarah who could be his parents as their birthdates are in 1823 and 1829 but have no confirmation on that. Does anyone know who his parents were? Its great to connect with family this way. Roseanne

Hi Emily:

I have been speaking via email with another descendant of Hugh Robert Spain. The photos attached are from her. These photos are "Buck" and Thomas, sons of Hugh. My contact lives in Chattanooga, but grew up in Texas. She sent several photos to me and I was thrilled to see some of Hugh's family. Hugh Robert and David T. were brothers. I have copies of the land grants they used to acquire the land in Henderson County, TN when they came from North Carolina. David T. is my great-great, Theophilus ("The" with a long E) was my great grandfather and my grandfather was William Cornelius Spain. I grew up not far from the farms, but now live in Nashville. I believe that most of the Spain ancestors are buried in Spain Cemetery near the farmland. My grandfather moved to Milan, TN (Gibson County) when my mother was nearly five years of age and he is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Lavinia, TN. I have photos of my grandfather and his mother Sarah Jane Smith Spain Willis (wife of Theophilus), but none of Theophilus. Theophilus died when my grandfather was age two in a horse accident. My grandfather died in 1932. It is interesting that your mention a William Brewer. My great grandfather (father-in-law of William C. Spain is William M. Brewer of Henderson and Carroll Counties (father of Mary Ella Brewer Spain). My mother (David T. Spain's great grandchild) is alive and we celebrated her 90th birthday in October.

Polly Pollard Scoville
Also, here is a site I enjoy. Brenda Fiddler has really helped me in my research. Hugh Spain, David T's brother, was the postmaster of the town of Spain. David T. was a "Squire" and I am told this means he was a justice of the peace and also did other official work. Copy and paste the site below. The Smith's are my ancestors in that Theophilus Spain, my great-great, married Sarah Jane Smith Spain Willis (I have her photo). She married John Willis a few years after Theophilus died. Theo died when my grandfather was age two. Jane married Mr. Willis next door. Jane is buried in Spain cemetery with Willis as a last name.

http://www.tnyesterday.com/yesterday_henderson/smithsc.html

I only read about Dr. Clark providing a home to the Spain children this week. Here is the thread from where I read this info - lavenue816 - which may be your cousin.

I have acquired many death certificates of the Spains from the State Library here in Nashville. I would be happy to find any you want. I thought my great grandmother - David T.'s granddaughter - Sarah Jane Smith Spain Willis - probably died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. "Jane" died in July of that year - three months before my mother was born. I remember seeing that the flu was the cause of so many deaths in Henderson County during that period, but when I found Jane, the doctor listed "old age" as the cause of death. She was only ill a few days according to her obit found in the Lexington newspaper. It could still have been the flu. It is always interesting to see who reported the death, which could be a friend or family member. Jimmy Dean bought Clifton Warren's store. Is that right?

I found a published photo of Alonza Spain and his family and found Jude Clark in the photo as a small child. Was he in this photo through a marriage or was this because Dr. Clark raised a Spain relative? I have an email to someone that may know this question. Do you know of Alonzo Spain? I can email this family photo if you like. David T. is the ancestor of Alonzo.
Brenda

I believe that one of the Mitchum children from Gibson/Carroll was Millard Mitchum who moved to Nashville (Davidson) and then to Spring Hill, TN (Maury County) where my husband grew up. He was a hugely successful farmer and his farm is run by his son today. I researched his family a long time ago and found them in Gibson County and then Carroll County. Millard Mitchum's son is Millard Mitchum, Jr., but he is known as "Bud". Bud's house sits on the highway to Spring Hill after you exit from I-65 South. The exit is called the Goose Creek. Bud never married and is the only child. No close relatives are left as I was told.

Hi:

I was not notified of this posting and only checked this site today. I cannot verify that Thomas was David's father, but I feel that he was and believe it is in my files that I got 25 years ago. The info is in my attic and I will soon be hunting for that when the weather is better. You are so fortunate to have found an early letter with so much info. I recently placed a photo on Ancestry.com of Sarah Jane Smith Spain Willis, daughter-in-law of David T. Spain. She married his son, Theophilus, and their son, my grandfather, was William Cornelius. "The" (family called him this with a long E) died when my grandfather was age two. She married her neighbor John Willis. Her photo was taken with John. Are you a member of Ancestry.com? If not, how could I get this photo to you. Jane was the daughter of John Smith and Nancy Blackwell Smith. They lived in District One, Henderson County - farm-next-to-farm. Mother remembers has spoken of Uncle Archie (Archibald Smtih, Jane's brother. Mother turned 90 in October.

The land grants are in my attic, which is not heated. I will start the search when warm weather returns. One of Hugh's descendants, born in Texas but now in TN, and I are going to the Spain Cemetery in the Spring to where the family farms were located (where my mother was born in 1918). We will visit with Brenda Fiddler who has published books about those in that area. I have promised Brenda to have the grants by then. David T. Spain also gave land for a church in the area and I must find that document. I will post the info when the documents are found.

I am not sure how I know that Hugh Robert and David were brothers. I started my research 25 years ago and then gave birth to my daughter ended my research until about five years ago when I began again. I remember knowing that they were brothers all of this time so I will have to find from where this info came.

The Spain farmland was located side-by-side and continued down highway 104 outside Cedar Grove, TN. Lexington is the next town. I am investigating if any of the 1,700 acres David and Hugh acquired remains in the family today. My uncle lived on some of the land until his death. My mother lives in Carroll County, but left to live in Gibson County when she was around five. My grandmother returned and died on one of the farms in 1941. After my grandmother's death, the farm was auctioned.

I think that I attended the Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church with Donald and Gerry Spain. I posted earlier that my great-great grandfather was David T. Spain. My great grandfather was Theophilus Spain and my grandfather was William Cornelius Spain. My mother is still alive and is age 90. David T. Spain married the widow of his brother (Hugh Spain died during the Civil War). Susan, Hugh's widow and David T. were found on the 1880 census and David died after this census. Susan and David T. were raising a grandchild, Susan Josephene, and after David died, Susan and her grandchild moved to Texas to be near a son. We believe David T. is buried in Spain Cemetery near the family farms. David T. and Hugh Spain obtained their land in Henderosn County near Cedar Grove from Government Land Grants and moved from North Carolina. At one point, David and Hugh owned 1,700 acres. David T. was a Jutice of the Peace and Hugh was the Postmaster of the Town of Spain for several years. I have photos of Hugh's family that I obtained from a cousin in Chattanooga just recently if you are interested.

Brenda Pollard Scoville (Polly)

I am the great-great of David T. Spain of Henderson County, Tennessee. My great was Theophilus Spain and my grandfather was William Cornelius Spain. Theophilus (he was called "The" with a long e) was killed by runaway horses when my grandfather was age two. My great grandmother (Sarah Jane Smith Spain Willis) remarried a John H. Willis (Pa Willis) when my grandfather was age 10. I have photos of Sarah Jane Smith Spain Willis and also my grandfather if interested. Sarah Jane Smith Spain Willis died July 1918 and is buried in Spain Cemetery not far from the family farms. William Cornelius Spain died in 1931 and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery near where he was living, which is now the Milan Army Ammunition Plant. David T. Spain's great granddaughter, my mother, is alive and is now age 90. I do not have the name of David T.'s father, but believe his name was Thomas.

Brenda Pollard Scoville (Polly)

It is possible. I have not worked on the history of the David Spain children except for The (long E). Here is the 1850 census. My great-great Theophilus is nine years old. Could David Spain, age 20, be your great-great? I have photos of Hugh's children and an obit for his wife Susan Cobb that married David T. my great-great after his brother Hugh died. She moved to Texas after David T. died some time after the 1880 cencus. I can send photos to you tonight from my home computer. I do not have a photo of The (long E) and hope that one day I will. See census below.

Carey Spain 12
David Spain 20
David T Spain 44
Eliza Spain 40
Eliza M Spain 21
Emily Spain 8
Harriet Spain 7
James Spain 17
John Tyler Spain 5
Kinson Spain 15
Milus Spain 19
Theophilus Spain 9
Thomas P Spain 2

View
Original
Record

View original image
View blank form

Save This Record

Hi Don:

Yes. Dad's name is spelled Almer. You have a good memory. He passed away in 1989 and became sober about 10 years before his death and enjoyed a wonderful relationship with my daughter before his death. He was an amazing person in that he stopped drinking without medical intervention or AA. Mother is living in McKenzie with my sister, Judi, and we had a 90th birthday party for her in October. At least 20 nieces and nephews out of a total of nearly 50 attended. It reminded me of the Spain reunions that we would have every Sept. Mother is the last of 12.

Your mother was a lovely person inside and out. I got to see her again at Milan Hospital when I was with a family member. Have you been involved with geneaology research very long? I started about 25 years ago when I worked in downtown Nashville. My work was relatively easy in that the Spain's and Smith's lived next to each other - farm after farm. I found that David T. and Hugh Robert Spain owned at least 1,700 acres. I found the land grants that brought them to the area from North Carolina. I recently received photographs of Hugh's family and was excited to get them since I knew nothing about that line. Hugh Spain's widow traveled to Texas after the death of David T. our great-great (she married David T. after Hugh died) and I received her obit from 1903 last week. Let me know if you are searching for anything from the Spain line. Not sure I could help, but I would be happy to try. Good to hear from you.

Brenda Pollard Scoville (Polly)
Nashville, TN

Polly,

I was wondering. How do you know for sure that David T. and Hugh Robert are brothers? I would love a copy of the land grant that you have.

You say they came from North Carolina. Do you know what year?

My Brewer line descends from Benjamin Brewer of Benton County, Tennesse. We might be distantly related through the Brewer line as well. I'll have to check what I have. William Henderson Brewer married Mary Emma (I believe she is a Tully. There is one tree on line that lists her as a Parker.) William Henderson and Mary Emma lived in Henderson County, TN at one point.

The Tully's and the Spain's are very intertwined. Two of Hugh Robert Spain's children married Tully's. I believe the Tully connection is how Mary Emma Spain ended up married to William Nolan Brewer as well.

Do you know if Theodore Spain is related to David T and Hugh Robert?

Thanks,
Emily

I'm not sure if the will actually exists or it is just the court minutes discussing the will that exist. Most of the wills and marriage documents were destroyed by fire. I guess someone should check with the courthouse to be sure. The Henderson County, TN website lists that the marriages and wills exist from 1895 and that most of the records were destroyed by fire in 1863 and 1895.

I knew that David T. was executor of Hugh's will. I recieved the information from Jerry Spain several years ago. I know that David T is listed as the Husband of Susan in the 1880 Henderson County Census. According to Susan's obituary she moved to DeWitt County, TX soon after 1880. Three of her children lived there. Thomas Benjamin, Hugh Buchanon, and Belvenia (sp).

I would be greatly interested if you find anything regarding Hugh or his parents on your trip in the spring. I have information on most of Hugh Robert's children if you are interested.

I am also starting to compile information regarding the descendants of David T. and Theodore C. when I find it. I think eventually we'll discover that most of the Spain's of Henderson and Carrol Counties are related.

Do you know what County David T and Hugh hail from in North Carolina? I find it confusing because Hugh's birth place is consistently listed as Tennessee. I figured his family migrated to Tennessee prior to his birth.

Emily
