"Clayton Huron Wheatley Is Auto Accident Victim near Camden
A Big Sandy resident died enroute to a Nashville hospital Friday, April 19, of injuries received earlier when his car sideswiped a pickup truck and crashed into a bridge abutment here, State Trooper Troy Odle said.
Dead is Clayton Huron Wheatley, 37, driver of the car. Joseph Swearington, 47, Camden, driver of the truck, was treated and released from a Bruceton clinic, but returned to the hospital for further observation and confinement.
The trooper said the accident happened about a half mile east of Camden on U.S. 70 during a rainstorm. He said the pickup went off a 15-foot embankment and struck a tree and that Wheatley's car carened to the left and hit the bridge.
Wheatley was treated at Benton Clinic and died in an ambulance while being taken to Nashville.
Wheatley was a native of Benton County, a son of James Wheatley of Paris, and Mrs. Claudie Belyew Wheatley of Camden.
Services conducted by the Rev. Bonnie Sykes were held Sunday at McRae's Chapel Methodist Church. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Other survivors are his widow, Mrs. Thelma Logsdon Wheatley; a son, David Wheatley, Big Sandy; a daughter, Miss Judy Wheatley, Big Sandy; a brother, Edward Wheatley, Detroit; and five sisters, Mrs. Frank Heyne and Mrs. Edward Lowry of Camden, Mrs. Carl Willoughby of Paris, Mrs. Leon Forrest of Big Sandy, and Mrs. Lonnie Carpenter of Leighton, Alabama."
