James Tipton, Treasie Chestnut Tipton, & daughter Pearl Ann Tipton (who married Kenneth Tippins)

I'm looking for information on James Tipton and his wife Treasie Chestnut Tipton who lived in the Maryville, Tennessee area. Treasie was born in 1897 in Daviess County, Indiana and died in 1980 in Blount County, Tennessee. Her parents were William Chestnut and Margaret (Lamb) Chestnut. She married James Tipton and had a daughter, Pearl Ann Tipton. James & Treasie also had twins that died early in life. Pearl Ann married Kenneth Tippins. He was born in 1915 and died in 1999 in Blount County, Tennessee. Pearl Ann was born about 1919 or 1920, judging from a photo of her and my mother.
I'd like to know where Treasie and James Tipton are buried. I'd also like to know if Pearl Ann Tippins is still living. I'd like to know if Pearl Ann and Kenneth Tippins had any children.
Treasie was my mother's first cousin.
Any information on this family would be appreciated,
Janice

W.E. Parham tells of old places, 1930

Maryville Enterprise, April 2, 1930:

“Interesting Old Places In County---The following paper was read by W.E. Parham, Blount County’s most diligent and reliable historian, in a recent meeting of the Mary Blount Chapter, D.A.R. It has so much of interest that we take this opportunity of printing it that the record may be preserved.
In the description of the boundaries of the county, it speaks of the “Nicholas Bartlett Mill and Dam,” as boundary between us and Knox. The mill was near the present highway bridge over Stock Creek, and on the west side, as I saw the remains in 1866 and sometime later. His house was in Knox County, between the creek and the house called the “Pickens House,” where Will Cunningham lives. His will is in Knox County, dated 1812, probated 1814. He owned the Haddox or McBath land and where brick yard is in Blount. The first house or blockhouse was burnt by Indians, destroying two young men, Flenneken and Tipton, who thought they could stay and be safe. The sills of the old dam could be seen the last time I hunted for them, say some ten years ago. Bartlett and later a man named Freeman or King lived here; both were Revolutionary soldiers. Nearly opposite this place and across Little River west was the home of William Tipton, a Revolutionary soldier. His house was within 40 feet of the present barn of Howard Badgett. He, his wife and his son, Jonathan, and his wife, and some others are buried near 1/8 of a mile west of the old site in a small grove of timber. Graves were once covered by a small shed and fenced off, is marked by stones only. The shed decayed long ago. The Badgett family have for many years placed a U.S. flag and flowers there each May on decoration day. William Tipton died in 1848, a very aged man. His will is in the Maryville Court House.
The large, two-story house near what is known as Wright’s Ferry, or near two miles northwest of the bridge crossing Little River on the way to Knoxville by Topside, is on the Dr. Isaac Wright farm. The family graves are north of the house near 400 feet. He was noted as the author of “Wright’s Family Adviser,” a useful book for home to care for the sick until a physician can be had. The ferry was used when the waters of Little River were past fording by the Maryville people. This book was printed on Madisonville, Monroe County, Tennessee. Dr. Isaac Wright was born October 1, 1758, died September 6, 1843.
Near one half mile west of Chandler Station on the south side of L. & N. Railroad is the old home of the Rankin family. And on the opposite side of the railroad and on the Houser Dairy farm, is the old Paul house in which was organized the first Masonic Lodge for Blount County. This was between the year 1808 when the Grand Masters of many states met in Knoxville, and the year 1812 when as is related by James Harris a story his father told him of a meeting in this house in which a boy attempted to hear and see what was going on by stealing up the stairs from the room below and was caught by the outside guard. This is a large, log house, dilapidated, but Mr. Houser said he wished to preserve it so long as he could because of the story. It was being used as storage for feed and grain in 1927. The grandmother of James Harris, also Sam Kidd, was Mrs. Ephriam Dunlap, a Paul from this home. Harris was past 80 in 1925 when he told me of this fact, as told to him by his father and one of his uncles. On the new graded road between Louisville and Ballard’s Chapel or bridge at Little River, and about two miles east of Louisville, is the remains of a brick house. It was occupied in 1927, known as the Warren homestead. This dates to a very early period, as the home of a Warren who was the father of many girls and boys who intermarried with many of the early families. The house was built near 1812.
The house opposite of Lowery Yearout on the Louisville-Maryville road, say northeast near 1/4 mile, with the rock chimney, is the old Hart-Hood home. It is near one hundred years old. It is near 5 ½ miles northwest of Maryville and on the right, near 1/4 mile from the road. Rev. Nathaniel Hood lived here. His children married into the Hart, Frow, McTeer families. Conn and others built before 1823.
The rock house near Lowe’s Ferry called the Griffetts-Humes house was built by James Gillespie, son of William. He had brothers John and Robert. They were sons of the William Gillespie who died in 1825, aged 92 years. William’s son, John, had a son, Rev. Evander Gillespie, who was alive in 1926, age 90 years at 451 Lincoln Avenue, Palo Alto, California. His mother was a Mrs. Jane Kilbourne (his father’s third wife). James Gillespie sold the rock house and land in 1831 to Matthew and John Russell, who sold it to Thomas Humes in 1834. Humes was killed by a slave whose wife he had whipped for some cause, and the heirs sold it. It was built in 1802 as dated over the door. It is therefore 128 years old. This James Gillespie first married Peggy Houston; second Jane Gallahar; third Patsie W. Wallace on August 12, 1823. In 1834 Matthew and John Russell sold the farm to David Hume. The Hume heirs sold it in 1850, signed by widow, Eliza Hume, L.A. and Isabella (Hume) Lenoir, O.P. and Caldonia (Hume) Temple and George W. and Jennette Mabry. James Gillespie had moved to Shelby County, Tennessee in 1836.
The brick house in Bear Hollow once owned by the George family is one that was built before 1830 by Samuel George, given to his son, Isaac Wright George on a plantation of over 1,100 acres. It is owned by the Parker heirs. It is a small farm of not over 150 acres.
Joseph Hart built a two-story, frame house near Duncan Station on the K. & A. Railway in 1797, being the first two-story, frame house built in Blount County. A part of it was standing in 1926, owned by the Aluminum Company of America. It adjoins the Jeff Kidd place and is on the road through Babcock section of Alcoa toward Rockford. See “Hart family book” in Hooke family or Ross and McCampbell families of Knox County. Mr. Hart first married Nancy Shanklin, second in 1809 to Mary Means.
The house where Judge R.P. McReynolds lived, known as the Bowerman place, now owned by Stephen McReynolds, is thought to have been built near 1848. The Ish farm house, just one mile west of the last named, is thought to have been built earlier, about 1842. In this house it is said a man named Whitsell, who married a Scott, was killed during the Civil War by Ben Ish, whom he attempted to arrest. Ish, asking to be allowed to get his coat, stepped into his mother’s room out of the hall, got a pistol from of a drawer, turned and shot the man and escaped. This was during the years 1861-1865. This house is in sight of where John Ish was killed by Indians on July 24, 1794, the spot being west near 600 feet. The family burial lot is in the woods on top of the hill with marker for Ish and some of the later members of the family.
Adjoining this farm in 1799, James Gillespie sold a farm of some several hundred acres to Samuel Shaw of Washington County, Tennessee. In the bend of the river toward Lenoir City is the old, brick homes of the descendants of the Revolutionary soldier, James Wyley, the Jacksons and Lenoir or Bussell. These are now in Loudon County, but previous to 1879 it was all Blount, as the Holston to its mouth and up Tennessee (now called Little Tennessee) was in the second, third and fourth districts of Blount County, up to Niles Ferry.
I am told that there are several houses in this territory over 100 years old. The old “Scruggs” or now Blankenship house, one mile east of Morganton, and where Fred D. Fulkerson, the father of Roe, the Kiwanis writer, lived and worked when taking the census of Blount County in 1870, is one of these century old homes.
In Greenback is the old Thompson house, occupied by James Hall, was built near 1812. The houses of that date are put together with wooden pins. Later, say up to 1845 they used handmade nails. This house corresponds with the McClung house that stood one mile southeast, torn down by J. Hilary Tedford, and its age settled by the “McClung book,” written by the historian of the family.
The Rock House between Big Springs and Friendsville, occupied by John Orr in 1927, is claimed to have been built in North Carolina or previous to 1796. Several aged men in 1923 have told me that they were so told by aged men, who were aged before 1850 and quoted the descendants of one David Perkins as saying “our forefather built this house in North Carolina.”
All that I have ever heard relate stories concerning this house agree that it “broke the man up who built it.”
The first deed to say anything as to this property is Samuel Frazier, who says “being the land I entered in 1812, Grant No. 2409, Vol. 2-163-1819.” Also 2-304 in 1822. These show that it went into the hands of David Parkins from Samuel Frazier, and by court sale a part to Alex Henderson (M-150 1836) from David to Levi Parkins. An aged man named Jones, who said he was born in 1850 and one of the Perkins, who died near 1842, told the neighbors, my parents that “my people built this house in North Carolina.” Samuel Frazier came from upper East Tennessee where he had been prominent. He owned this land where the Rock House is. He was sold out of part of the land by Court order because of debts. It is said that on the west end of the house, high up on the wall is a date cut that figures are in 17--, but I could not find these. And if so it might have been placed there long after it was built. I am not convinced that it was built in North Carolina, nor do I deny that it was. It should have more examination. The Grant No. 2409 at Nashville might aid. Frazier’s wife may have been a Parkins and her father may have built it, and Frazier attempted to keep it in the family but to much of a burden.
The house on the left of the L. & N. Railway’s main track, just beyond the underpass at Alnwick, was the home of the Rev. Thomas Hunter, pastor at Big Springs. It was built before 1826. He left here and went to South Carolina. There he was tarred and feathered because he preached against slavery. On this house near the eaves was guttering that had a date near where it emptied into the down spout that was stamped with 1852. This same kind and dates were on the Byerley house owned by George W. Henry; the Pride property in Maryville; the Masonic Institute; the C.T. Cates house; the Bogle or Saffell house which stood on the lot next to the M.E. Church or Number 47; the A.C. Montgomery house at the top of the hill two miles on old Knoxville Pike, and the Edward George house, now known as the McClurg place, five miles north of Maryville on the road between Wright’s Ferry Road and Rockford Depot Road. Suppose that date is when it was guttered.

Maryville Enterprise, April 9, 1930:

“Interesting Old Places In County---Following is the concluding portion of W.E. Parham’s story on old places in Blount County, the last installment being printed in last week’s Enterprise.
The old part of the brick house where John Yearout lived and his family now lives, two miles west and on the road to Big Springs, was built before 1824 by Daniel Yearout, and the land has been in the family ever since.
A Revolutionary soldier, Robert Sterling, lived on the farm where Mrs. Anna Rambo is near 3 ½ miles west of Maryville and to the left of Big Springs road. The house stood near 200 feet south of the present house, and it is claimed that he was buried on the farm but no indication there that I am able to find.
South of this house near one mile is the old Henry Sterling house on the land of Aaron and Simpson Love. Their old home was on this place and I was told in 1924 that part of it was standing, but did not get to go and see it. Would have been built before 1820.
On the hill across the road from James Ross, adjoining the Yearout farm was a part of the old John Frow house in 1924, but was gone in 1929. The father of this man built the Rock Church of the New Providence Presbyterian faith that stood on the northeast corner of the old cemetery at the corner of Main and Cates Streets. His name was Archibald Frow.
Ross Anderson said about 1870, he then aged, that the rock houses in Blount were built by a stonemason named Joseph Shoffen, especially he said the one that Jesse Kerr Jr., owned at Clover Hill. It was on the road to Morganton or Greenback, near 6 ½ miles west of Maryville on a hill above the sinking spring known as the Russell or May place. This farm was the first to raise clover in Blount County, and when the post office was placed at the home of William Gault a quarter to half a mile east, and opposite where the road comes in from Clover Hill Mill, the office was named “Clover Hill.” This man, Gault, had for his first wife one of that noted family, Weir. His second wife was a Logan. The Norwood Inn, built by John Norwood near 1820, is standing 14 miles west on the Niles Ferry Highway on the right. It was the stopping place for the stages of the early days and had at one time as many as 14 beds in the eight rooms, one used for reception, one as dining, kitchen, allow the family one, leaves only four for guests. George Brown, aged 101, told me in 1922, he then living at Lenoir City, that he stopped at this inn many times when driving stage from Maryville to Dalton, Georgia. This aged man also said “there was no underbrush. I was not able to cut me a switch nor whip handle from Maryville to Niles Ferry.” I will add here that Joseph Lamon, Add Clemens and another man, each over 82 at the time, were together and I asked them as to Blount County, and the reply of each was “my grandfather told me that it was open and that grass was as high as a horses’ back.” This seems reasonable when we think that the Indians burnt off the land each fall.
The brick house 14 miles south of Maryville on Nine Mile Creek, owned by J.J. Kiker, was formerly owned by W.W. Howard. On back by Macklin Kerr who built it near 1847. And if we trace houses of like type and build we will find they were built between 1847 and 1856. This house during the Civil War was headquarters of Gen. O.O. Howard of U.S.A. during the advance on Knoxville for relief of Gen. Burnside besieged by Gen. Longstreet.
In Morganton and near it are some old houses said to date as early as 1815. The claim is that the grist mill is older than this, but I cannot find it. There was a sawmill there earlier. This town was by act of Tennessee Legislature, October 25, 1813. Changed from the name of Portersville to Morganton, and hugh Kelso sold the commissioners 31 acres for the purpose of laying off and making the town. The David McKamey house near Clover Hill Mill, but east by ½ mile is old as the one built before the mill (gone) which was going up in 1849 when he was in the Legislature from Blount County, and wrote a letter home as to its progress.
The William McCamey house at Brabson ford or bridge across Little River on the road to Sevierville, later owned by his son, James McCamey, came to the family from John Ragan by deed Vol. 2, 68, 1819, and house was there then. This was another stage stop in the days of that style of travel. The stage came to Maryville by Sevierville with mail and passengers. Here the stage changed to Knoxville and further south of Maryville. The brick house near Brick Mill, the Henry house, was new in 1857, built by the widow, Narcissus Howard Henry and her sons, Rufus, Howard, John and George W. Henry. This is where J. Duff Henry lived and died near 1928. It is near 1 mile northwest of Brick Mill. This mill is supposed to have been built near the same time, but taking place of one that had been there from 1796, built by William Wallace, who died in 1799, a Revolutionary soldier, buried under the south corner of the old Rock Church in Maryville, but marked beside his son, Jesse Wallace, near the center, both marked by the D.A.R. Society.
The old John Ambrister house on the road to Knoxville, at Springfield, at pump station of the Aluminum Company of America 1 ¾ miles east of north from Maryville, was built before 1830. The land was granted to David Oglesby by No. 1225, adjoining him on the southwest by Ben Alexander of whom we know little. This Ambrister place was a change horse place for the stages, and remained so until after the trains came to Maryville in 1867. It was quite a settlement. There was a large store, a tan yard, a carding machine, grist mill and shoe shop with 4 to 6 workmen. Andrew Colville Montgomery built the house on the hill just beyond soon after he married in 1830 to Ann Houston, daughter of Matthew. And by their daughter is the Russells of near Holston College. The mill at this place was of rock construction, and came off the Ambrister place to A.C. Montgomery, separately from the 600 ½ acre tract he bought in 1833 from Matthew McGhee, which was parts of four other farms belonging to Ben Alexander, Thomas McCulloch, David Campbell and John Thornberry.
The John Craig Mill was just below the fort. It is partly enclosed in the present building of Williams Bros. Was former Willard. Before him Huffstetler, Sell Hooke. Before him, Elijah Walker. Before him James Waters. Was the property of James Wilson from near 1836 to 1865, bought by Jesse Thompson or his brother-in-law, James P. Montgomery, who inherited it from his father, John Montgomery, who was owner jointly with William King after Craig. This mill has been there since this land was admitted to the “Territory south of the Ohio and Holston.” I believe it to have been operated as early as 1793. See Knox County minutes “permission given John Craig to build a mill on Pistol Creek.” The miller’s house is just above Charles Blankenship’s house on Sevier Avenue.
The house used on the colored Presbyterian Church lot at the corner, was taken off of lot 55, at the corner of Main and college Streets, and was there before 1830. The house known as the C.T. Cates house on lot 29 was owned by the McGhee family, their family book claims very old Barclay McGhee’s daughter, Mrs. Rachel (Joseph J.) Walker lived in the house on lot above it, no. 28, and I have always had an idea that house on lot 29 was built by Dr. Alexander McGhee, the grandfather of Mrs. James A. Goddard, Mrs. Anna McGhee Rambo et al, was added to by Mr. Cates after 1870. The Sam Houston Inn is in my opinion the older, as it was built by Sam Love, a hatter, and lived in it before 1800. The house used as a public library is the Gen. William Wallace house, and the Hannum family there at one time, near 1828, it was the old James Berry home.
The Sam Everett house is another aged home. A lawyer named John E. Toole, son-in-law of Jesse Thompson who lived and owned where the present Carson Hospital is, and it was all on the land of the King and Montgomery grant that included all of East Maryville, Maryville College, Calamity Corner out to Southern Railway overhead bridge. Part of this house built, and moved as David Caldwell or for one of the two Trundles who divided the farm between Wilson L. Trundle and Daniel L. Trundle near 1830.
The McFadden house, part of the Tom or Amos Callahan house, is said to have been built near 1830. The Randal Kidd place belonged to the Freemen, and was said to be built near 1830, is near but east of Chandler Station. The house that Theo Wallace is in was built before 1812, well vouched for by T.F. Wallace, on Crooked Creek near Block House. His father was born in it in 1813.
The house in which R.A. Chandler died in 1828, situated near one mile west of Chandler Station, was known as the John May place. It was sold in 1820 to Daniel Taylor of Grainger County, Tennessee, and the house was then already built.
The Bert Howard house just below the Montgomery bridge on Nine Mile Creek, was built between 1820 and 1830 by the Tulloch family. Further down the creek is another house belonging once to Bert Howard, where H. Calvin Tedford lived, built for a man named Rosin, is near, if not quite 100 years old in 1929 if the date was placed on the brick chimney when it was built in place of the old rock one. The old mill on the way to Friendsville by the Middlesettlements Road, over 100 years old called the Mahoney Mill. The old Hackney Mill in Friendsville, now run by Moses Gamble, has part of the old mill built in 1810 in it surrounded by the new additions. On below it is the Riley Lee store house. This man was an aid to the slaves of the South in passing them on into the North. And his daughter wrote a book dealing with “Cujo’s Cave,” that showed up their guiding them on the road to Canada.
The old house in which Sam Houston taught school near 1811-1812, is yet standing on the farm of Charles M. Kennedy. It was built before 1806. The old Andrew Porter farm near Salem Baptist Church, now owned by a man named [William Fritz] Beckemeier and another man named Sayere, is where Gen. President-Senator-Governor of two states, Sam Houston, lived from December 1807 or January 1809. There his mother died in 1831. His sisters married from here, one to Matthew Wallace, later to his nephew, Gen. William Wallace. Another sister, Eliza Ann, married June 25, 1821 to Samuel Moore. They lived here until 1846 then moved to Walker County, Texas, and sold the home in 1849, she having procured the other shares from her brothers and sisters. In 1923 the chimney ruins could be seen, but in 1928 it had been removed and plowed over and was growing corn. But the old spring house stood.
The old Weir house in Alcoa that stands near Springbrook School is unused except for storage or feed. John Weir, the father-in-law of Joseph Lamon, said his father built it before 1809. I have heard of other old places, but have not been able to see or trace them. The house Hugh Clark lives in on Main and Norwood is the home of Andrew Thompson, one of the first Justices of the Peace in the County Court of 1796. It is on lot No. 49. He owned 50 and 51 lots and the 3 back lots to the creek. Rev. Fielding Pope lived here while a professor in Maryville College and before he married his second wife, Mrs. Anna White Hannum. His daughter married John M. Pride, son of the Dr. Sam Pride, who owned a plantation where J.C. Tucker, the West End School and the high school houses and lands about them now are in 1930. Dr. Pride was the first Clerk & Master of the Chancery Court of Blount County from 1852 to 1862.”

I am trying to locate the parents of John Alexander Neal. He is listed as Alexander Neal, age 30, born in NC, in the 1860 Blount census with his wife Lukinza Howard. There is also a Thomas H, Anna and Alvira listed in the 1860 Blount, Thomas and Anna were listed as born in NC. The 1850 image is unavailable through ancestry.com. I checked the GENWEB census, all the names are right but all the ages and birthplaces are wrong!!! Can anyone help me tie these folks together?

Court House burns 1879

Maryville Enterprise, July 22, 1937:

“Burning of the Court House in 1879---Near 10:00 o’clock on February 28, 1879, at night, while sleeping in the ell of the house located on lot No. 38 (was near where Service Barber Shop is in 1937) I was awakened by the screaming of my aunt, Mrs. Anna (James A.) Ruble, “Fire, Fire.” Moses Smith, my roommate, and I dressed, ran out on the Main Street, looking up west we saw the fire was in the southwest corner upstairs office of the frame part of the court House. This was the office of Allen Garner, colored, Justice of the Peace. By the time we arrived at the Court House the clerks from the H.L. Bradley store were with us with ropes (store was where Proffitts now is 1937). We tied ropes to the three first pillars and pulled them out from under the upper floor, but it failed to cause the frame-work to fall. We then commenced to clean out what was in the offices, entering the first two on right of the hall, being the Clerk & Masters. We carried out or threw out the windows all papers, books and furniture we found therein, then to each in turn of the others. The first on left or west side was the Circuit Court Clerks room. Next behind it was the County Court Clerks room, and in the rear of it was the Register’s office. These two had vaults and record books were safe in vaults. The third office on the right or east side was occupied usually by Revenue men as storage for illicit still apparatus, or vacant. So far as I know no one entered the basement, in which on the west side were shelves holding old documents, books of the incorporated town from 1852 to 1879, and possibly some old minutes of the County Clerks’ office, as these are missing between 1818 and 1834.
The upper floor or Court room had been equipped on each side of the entrance with ascending seats for spectators to overlook proceedings inside the Jurors bar and hear witnesses. Each side of the front or entrance, underneath this ascending seats had boarded up windows. And through the window from the Justice of the Peace office the fire soon worked its way, and because of the rich pine construction of the seats and steps, was past control.
The main part was brick near 40 X 60 feet. Below a hall eight feet wide to the front was added near July 6, 1868. A two story framed porch, fifteen feet wide and full width of the brick part, weather boarded at each end, floored and celled with an office at each end upstairs, with stairways from each side to a landing in front of the main entrance. This was built by H.C. Best and Henry Blevens at a cost of $465.00.
The east end office was used by the Sheriff and once for Clerk, R.C. Tucker. And at his death by T.D. Edington, Clerk pro tem until middle lower was vacated by W.H. Clemens, J.P.
It was my fortunate opportunity to see a brief gathered by Hon. William D. McGinley, Attorney at Law, in which he set out names of witnesses he had interviewed, and stated what they said as to where and when they met a party who acted very suspiciously, and would in my opinion, have been convicting evidence as to who caused the fire. He added at its close “owing to parents protest of their children going into court, and no one else agreeing to aid in the indictment and prosecution, I abandoned further proceedings.” Thus no one was ever tried for this fire of possibly incendiary cause. The party occupying the office in which the fire originated, was convicted and sent to the penitentiary for some years for placing in circulation County warrants upon which he had rendered Judgments.
The burnt Court House was begun in 1838, first occupied in February 1842. Its southwest side showed the shots fired by Confederates in order to capture Capt. James Dorton and his company one Sunday in 1863, on which day the buildings on both sides of Main Street to the buildings standing on corners of Love and Main Streets were all burned.
The county officials had to rent offices until a new building might be built. James A. Greer occupied a small office standing near where Brock Hardware is for County Clerk office. It had been the law office of W.D. McGinley, then a barber shop of Charles Wallace, colored.
In the brick building above present City Drug Store, owned by J.M. Greer, and in it his hardware store, the front two rooms upstairs were used by E. Goddard, the Clerk & Master and James A. Goddard, Trustee. The two rear rooms by W.C. Chumlea, Circuit Court Clerk and J.N. Badgett, Register.
In 1880, County Clerk and his court occupied the lower room of a frame building that stood where the City Drug Store is, with Ben Cunningham, Clerk, until near July 1881, when all moved into the East Tennessee Female Institute building which stood on ground where McCammon-Ammons Funeral Home is.
The new, two-story and basement Court House was occupied in 1882. It was destroyed by fire in July 1906, caused by catching from a building burning on Lot No. 60, where Proffitts now is.
The older Court Houses stood on Lot No. 61, reserved by the State for a public square; now occupied by the Bank of Maryville and others southwest of it.
In 1906, at a session of County Court, in the morning the Court voted to buy and build on lot where West End Grammar School is. But in the afternoon reconsidered that vote until and agreed to buy and build on a lot of 10 acres owned by Dr. John M. Coffin. Was a grant to John B. Cusick. Court and offices were in this dwelling until present new Court House was completed in 1908.
The only picture we had of the building burned in 1879 was a painting by John Collins, now owned by Will A. McTeer, Jr., Attorney at Law. This picture and one of the 1882 and 1908 buildings were presented to him by his uncle, Major Will A. McTeer, who died in 1925, and had held office of Circuit Clerk, U.S. Commissioner, Legislature and was prominent as an attorney for many years.
I have written this by request of party who has seen the photographs and who wanted a history of the burned buildings preserved.” ---Will E. Parham or “Tab” July 19, 1937.
BROOKS in Blount Co. (circa 1810)

My ancestor, Zachariah BROOKS, claimed to have been born about 1810 in Blount Co., TN (pension record), and that his parents were from Virginia (1880 census).

Zachariah moved "in an early day" to Fayette Co., AL, where he married Sarah McGill CHEEK in 1831. By 1850, they had moved to Texas, settling in Titus County.

Unfortunately, I have no clues as to the names of Zachariah's parents or siblings (if any) other than his own children's names:

1. Elizabeth A. BROOKS (1832-?)

2. James Alexander BROOKS (1834-1877)

3. Jesse V. BROOKS (1837-1915)

4. George Washington BROOKS (1840-1912)

5. Christopher Columbus BROOKS (1842-1895)

6. Martha Jane BROOKS (1844-1868)

7. John Valentine BROOKS (1847-c1885)

8. Lee W. BROOKS (?)

The 7th child's middle name, Valentine, was the name of Sarah CHEEK's father, so it seems logical to suggest that John BROOKS may have been the name of Zachariah's father.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Can anyone help me find info about John Hale born about 1753-1754 in Bedford County, VA.? I found this at http://genealogytrails.com/tenn/revwarsoldiers.html

JOHN HALE

John Hale applied for Revolutionary pension in 1833 while living in Bledsoe County, Tenn. He was born in Bedford County. Va. in 1753 or 1754. He enlisted in Bedford County. Va.. in 1776. He volunteered in Capt. Harry Bluford's Company. Lieut. John Frields, Ensign Abram Sharp. They marched to the Cherokee Country and were in the battle of Long Island. He was discharged and returned home. He went to school and re-enlisted under Capt. Charles Watkins. He had 24 months' service in all. His discharge was burned in Blount County in 1803. After the War he moved to Wythe County, Va.. then to Greene County, Tenn.. to Washington County, Tenn., to Blount County, Tenn. and then to Bledsoe County about 1813.

I think my gg grandfather John Hale was born about 1815 in Wyhte County, VA. He married Sarah Fawbush (born 1822 in Sullivan Tenn.) about 1840. My gg grandfather and his spouse Sarah are listed in the 1860 census in Magoffin County, KY.

Could this John Hale born 1753-1754 in Bedford County, VA be related to my gg grandfather?

Thanks for any help.

John Hale
Searching for info on my ggg-grandfather, Joshua Taylor, born 1800 VA. Married Sarah Kelsey ca. 1826 and lived in Bledsoe Co, TN from then until late 1859 when they migrated into Wayne Co, KY. After that, they moved to the Taylor/Marion/Casey County area of KY. Joshua remarried after 1860 to Amanda Blankenship and had Martha and Ike. His children with Sarah: Lewis, Alexander L, Mary Ann "Polly", Elizabeth Jane, Margarett, James David, Thomas, William C. and Henry Clay. Sarah went by Sally and Joshua was known as Joe. Believe they may have lived in Blount County before moving into Bledsoe. Any info appreciated - have lots to share about descendants. My Taylors tended to travel with my Hale family. I descend from John Hale who once lived in Blount County - Rev. War veteran who died in Bledsoe County, TN around 1845.

In the listing of markers for the Big Springs Cemetery, the birth date, 11-18-1817and death date, 4-10-1864, for John F. Cochran and Jane Cochran are the same dates. I suspect this is a mistake. Does anyone have the correct dates for birth and death for these two people? Also, I was told that some of the markers were destroyed. Does this list include just the markers present or the burials listed by the church? I tried e-mailing Dale Morton who did the transcription, but he deleted my e-mail without reading it.

Book on William Keeble of Blount County

While reading my latest issue of Everton’s Genealogy, I found an announcement of a new book related to Blount County: Revolutionary War Veteran William Keeble of Blount County, Tennessee and His Heirs by Albert W. Docker, Jr. The book is available from Heritage Books.

The description from the website reads:

“William Keeble, Sr. (1755-1834) enlisted as a Revolutionary War soldier in Fauquier County, Virginia, and was the first owner of the soil that now covers his remains in Blount County, Tennessee. The majority of this extensively researched book is devoted to six generations of William and Mary Keeble’s descendants. The background of William Keeble and an examination of Mary Keeble’s Bible precede the genealogical sketches of their heirs. The background of William Keeble includes: wartime records, his first family, his life from 1782 to 1799, marriage records, his will, and declarations to the government. The examination of Mary Keeble’s Bible includes: her family and her life; declarations to the government, her will, the settlement of her estate, and the disposition of Keeble land. In 1945, Albert Dockter married Dorothy Kathryn Gredig. He found it remarkable that his wife’s ancestors in the Keeble line had been residents of Blount County, Tennessee, for several generations. After the birth of their first child in 1948, he decided to “secure the baby’s lineage.” For over half a century, Mr. Dockter gathered vital statistics on the Keeble family from the Maryland Hall of Records; the New York, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia state libraries; the McClung collection in Knoxville; all the surrounding county courthouses; and numerous cemeteries. He also conducted personal interviews and “some of the first folks interviewed remembered the children of William Keeble, Revolutionary War veteran.” A full name index adds to the value of this work. 2007, 8½x11, paper, index, 272 pp.”

I blogged more about it on the Blount County, TN Blog at
http://is.gd/t62 if you're interested. Looks like a great resource for anyone researching this line.

Taneya

Blount County TNGENWEB Coordinator - http://www.tngenweb.org/blount

Blount County Blog - http://tngenwebblount.wordpress.com/

She was my dad's youngest sister, after he passed in 1973 we lost contact with her and her family. I am interested in finding out also if this crime was ever solved. Thanks for any information someone can provide.

Maryville Enterprise, October 2, 1929:

“Former Resident Recalls Old Times---Seventy years ago William Burnett was pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Crooked Creek. Day services 11:00 a.m.; night “early candle light.”
Following Mr. Burnett was Rev. Catlett. He became Major in a Tennessee Union regiment and died in camp at Nashville in 1864. Think W.W. Goddard of Maryville, will remember his death.
Members and citizens before the Civil War: J.M. Williams, James Waters, John Lowery, John E. Gamble, and my father, Henry Clemens. River John Coulter and his family came in their big carriage, and on big days brought their dinner and were not afraid to ask their friends to eat with them.
After the war, ministers and others: Captain John Morton, James R. Coulter, P.B. McCarroll. For half a century I have delighted to remember Mr. McCarroll’s lofty gestures and hear his splendid tenor voice singing, “Yes, We Will Gather At The River.” J.W. Hitch would almost fly singing “Wondrous Love.” On picnic occasions were Dr. Lord, the then young Major McTeer and others.
John McKenzie was the champion of Maryville, saddling to Knoxville and back afternoons, fording Little River twice at the McCulloch ford.” ---taken from a larger article written by Henry T. Clemens, 823 Spofford Ave., Spokane, Washington.

Alexander SMITH and Catherine WRIGHT, Sarah JOHNSON

I am looking for information on my great, great, great grandfather one Alexander SMITH, he was born somewhere in TN and I believe it to be Blount County. He was married to a Catherine WRIGHT for a time and they several children together, one being a son named Charles "Charley" SMITH, they moved to Greenville, Wayne County, Missouri. They are listed there beginning with the 1850 Census for St. Francois Township. Their son Charley had a daughter named Dorthula Dalue SMITH which is my great grandmother, she married a William Franklin EADS. I have found a marriage record on the Blount County Genweb site for Alexander SMITH who married one Sarah Johnson on 8 March, 1838. Now, when we get to the census listings in Missouri his wife is listed as Catherine up until we reach the 1880 Census where she is listed as Sarah SMITH. Dont know if Sarah is Sarah Catherine WRIGHT or if these were two different women? Does anyone have any idea? Would appreciate some clues.

Gwen

Alexander Smith

My 3rd gr grandparents were Carlton Keeling and Charlotte Smith. A new book at our library identifies one of her brothers and one nephew. Does anyone know anything about Alex (Alexander). He was in Blount Co on the 1840 census.

"Tennessee Convicts, Early Records of the State Penitentiary"
Vol 1, 1831 - 1850
by Charles A. and Tomye M. Sherrill.

On page 126 I found the following (I quote verbatim spelling and all as
they did):

Warren Smith, alias Warren Graham. From Anderson County. Offense: Pettit
larceny. Sentence: one year. Rec'd Nov. 24, 1837. His is 18 years old,
5' 6" high, weighs 156 lbs.. He has fair hair, blue eyes and fair skin.
He has two small scars on his forehead. Born in Anderson County about
two miles from Clinton on the Clinch River. His mother is married to a
man by the name of Benjamin Graham. He has two uncles living in Blount
County, Alex SMITH and CALTON KEELAND. They lived within two miles of
Merryville. Found guilty and sentanced to one years of confinement in
the Jail and Penitentiary of the State of Tennessee. (signed) W.
McIntosh. Warren Smith was discharged Dec. 5th, 1838, having been
detained 11 days for improper conduct. (Ledger 45, p. 180).

Calton Keeland is Carlton Keeling. He moved from Anderson Co to Blount Co between 1832 and 1835.

Any information, no matter how little, will be greatly appreciated.

William Harrison , Greene, Blount, Davidson CO. TN & Rockingham Co. NC

William Harrison born about 1730 and died before 1826 in Rockingham County without leaving a will. He lived on Wolfe Island Creek. In 1826 a power of attorney was given to Yancey Holman wife of Amy Harrison and son in law of William for son Nathaniel Harrison of Blount County, TN. and son Jesse Harrison and Chairty (Harrison) and husband Charles Baker of Greene County, TN. A son John Harrison was admin. of estate. Later deeds show that grandchildren by the name of Vermillion also received land from his estate as their mother was dead. I believe one of his daughters may have married Guy Vermillion. My William Harrison lived very close by on Little Town Creek and I believe he may also have been a son, which I cannot prove until I am able to find this property settlement. My William wrote a will in 1826 naming his wife Nelly and sons John, William, Zachariah, Starling, and Landon. Landon born 1790 was my gggrandfather. Nelly's name was listed as Ellinor when she sold property on Little Town Creek in 1831. Landon was in Davidson County, TN. before 1835. I have been researching Harrison's for over 30 years and have a well documented line back to William and Ellinor. William was born somewhere in VA. and Ellinor in Maryland. Zachariah Harrison in later census records list his birthplace as VA. But Landon always list his as NC. I would love to exchange information with anyone researching this family. I should have the results of a Y DNA test back in 6 weeks, it would be nice to make a connetion before then.
Thanks,
Mary Harrison Gibson

Hangings in Blount County by W.E. Parham

Maryville Enterprise, (Blount Co. TN) September 29, 1938:

“Blount County Hangings---Some years ago I found in an old Henry Bible written on a fly-leaf, “James Brice hung in Maryville on July 30, 1814.” I believe this to be the one referred to in a publication in a Knoxville paper some years ago as “a man named Price was hung in Blount County near 1810 for stealing slaves.” In 1902, in the Knoxville Journal, on 3-1, Henry Francis Beaumont says, “Charles Cox, colored, was hung for killing David Hume while playing checkers with Bill Hackney. This was in the house now owned by Robert McCampbell, called the “Marble House” near Farragut or Lowe’s Ferry. This was on Oct. 25, 1839.” On Sept. 26, 1828, Henry Lunsford was hung for killing a man named Murphy at a log rolling. These hangings were near the intersection of McGhee and Porter Streets in Maryville. The court records as to these trials are lost, and information is given as to the two last as per John A. Goddard and Will A. McTeer’s writings in newspapers, and as quoted above. The sheriff presiding at the two last was Will Wallace, although eleven years apart.
In 1868 or 1869, John Murphy was tried for killing a name Lunsford. He escaped, was re-arrested in Kentucky, brought back, dismissed from Blount to Loudon, there nolle prose because of no witnesses, this being on Sept. 29, 1875. T.N. Hood of Maryville was prosecuting attorney general pro tem as William Welcker, the attorney general for the State disqualified himself. It is claimed that the Murphy man nor the Lunsford man were kin in the two cases, yet were in the same section of the county, that in 1870 was cut off to form Loudon County.
The writer of this saw John Murphy, both before his escape and after his return for trial; he was near 6 feet, dark and claimed to be part Indian. The only living witness when he was to be tried at Loudon Court was his old time sweetheart, who had married and lived in North Carolina, and refused to come to Tennessee to testify. There was some legal controversy as the original presentment was in Blount and no new one could be procured in Loudon because of no witnesses. There have been many tried for murder but through merciful juries, pardoning governors, no others have been hung or even suffered much punishment. Several still live and go about in the county by a few patronized and mixing as if no unlawful acts. The last was the Flynn case for the uncalled for murder of Bart Coker, our city policeman, condemned by a jury who had overcome all the Quaker sympathy begun in 1791, and other teachings because of the strong proof as to the act, yet by high authority is set aside for to enable a criminal to someday be loose on the people again.” ---W.E. Parham or “Tab.”

Seeking siblings and parents of James Monroe RICE, born 10 Aug 1803 in TN. He married Sarah (Sally/Sallie) HEDRICK in Blount Co.,TN on 12 Oct 1828, and they were in Sevier Co. in 1830, Blount Co. in 1840 and Knox Co. in 1850. By 1860, JMR and his entire clan had moved to Blount Co,AL. His daughter, Rebecca, published in 1893 that her paternal grandparents were another James RICE and a Rebecca BORDON (sic). In the Knox Co,TN census for 1850, the household after JMR's was that of his married daughter, Jane RICE HAUN, and it included a Rebecca RICE, age 97, born VA.

I have a good bit of info on the ancestry of Sarah HEDRICK but nothing else on the RICE line. Anyone else out there possibly researching these folks?
Best Regards, Jim Rice
